Just got back in from Terre Haute and thought I would share my thoughts. Firstly, a 30-20 loss to Northern Iowa, while disappointing, isn't the end of the world. These guys boatraced us 62-7 last year and we were within striking distance the entire game despite missing our entire starting LB corps and having a pretty pedestrian offensive day. Keep chopping Sycamores, better days have arrived and will continue to do so!

Also wanted to give a shout out to the new boardies that I met, Eleven, SycamoreFan317 and the slew of others. Was hoping to meet a couple more of you, but what can you do. Also a big thanks to Tom for lending me hammers, lighters and everything else someone could need this year -- and the programs when I was in Vegas! Mucho gracias!

Offensively

We were contained pretty well by UNI. I give a lot of credit to their front four as they really did a great job of neutralizing the running game and also pinning back their ears and getting to Fouch on passing downs. There was a reason they were ranked so highly coming into the game. That said, we did expose them in spots and we missed on some things that would hav been huge.

Our running game has struggled against teams with good defensive lines so we really need to figure something out there. It seemed like we were in 2nd and 3rd and long pretty much every series -- we need to find a way to have more manageable down and distance. I'm ready to table the wildcat as well, because we just seemed to get stuffed every time anymore. Also, still a lot of dancing and not running straight ahead. Hope our backs watched UNI because they did a great job of hitting the hole or cutting and going... no hesitation. Even on "stopped" plays, they seemed to get 4-5 yards. Also noticed that all of their runners turned and backed into contact or piles so they could fall backward and get extra yardage.

The passing game was still pretty solid today. Aside from several bad throws by Fouch, he looked pretty decent and our receivers always seem like they're going to catch anything he throws, especially Kent and Hilton. I think it would have been more effective had they had to stay honest, but the lack of running game allowed them to drop the LBs into the secondary and they always seemed to have 4-5 guys at the ball quickly.

Defensively

Missing our entire linebacking corps really hurt. We really had no speed along the outside and they took advantage of that all day long. It seemed like any time they cut one to the outside, they got big chunks of yardage -- this is where we really missed Ryan Roberts today. That said, we made some nice stops and I thought our defensive linemen were held all day long. I know of at least 3-4 occasions where a DL was tackled to the ground from behind when he got past the offensive linemen and there was no flag on the play. I think today showed we need more depth and speed and that will come -- can't fault the effort.

Special Teams

I'm not going to spend much time here. They still need work, both in coverage and protection. Wish we could age Corey as he'll absolutely boom one and then kick one to the 20. Consistency will come with age. I'm sure there is a ton more I could add, but I'm good with what I saw today. The program has improved and the product on the field is leaps and bound better. Those young men should be proud of the turnaround this program has had because of their hard work and effort. It's a joy to drive a couple hours every saturday to watch them play.

Oh, one last things. I'd fire the referees today. I thought they were absolutely terrible all day long.

Good summary, Boda. I pretty much agree with everything you said and you said it better than I would so I'll go with it. Seriously, not much to say that hasn't already been said. Defense was our biggest problem and losing three LB's likely had EVERYTHING to do with most of it. Offensively, we just didn't have the horses to keep up with UNI and their VERY good and elusive QB. I swear he ran more on broken or well-defended plays than he did on pre-set plays but that is what makes him so fricking good. They are big and experienced and it showed.

Our guys played their asses off but basically were over-matched from the start. That said, we had a chance to win in the 4th quarter and that is all you could ask for. The crowd was loud and into it and 6K is no insult at all, boosted by RP's incredible marketing ploy to invite the hoop crowd as well. Good call.

A huge THANK YOU and a major call out to Tailgating Tom, who was a marvelous host as well as a marvelous cook. He's the real deal guys and if you ever have a choice to join him, DO IT, because he's good people and so is his tailgating crew. Got to meet so many SP faces today, Eleven, SycFan317, BlueStreak, Sycamore Fan (i've known him for 40 years but didn't know who he was on here), new sycamore fan, indiana state 45 and several more I have lost in the shuffle. That was fun. Disappointed I didn't get to meet Landrus but I am sure I will some day. (We ALL have to make sure he grows up right and becomes a REAL Sycamore freshman someday).

I didn't get to meet TJ but I think he doesn't really exist and that TJ, Tom James are just pen names and he is actually a lap top computer. His comment about Jimmy Brumfield made me sad because I would have loved to have seen him today. Jim and Butch Penn, two mainstays on the Syc's in my years, used to ride home to PA with me on a regular basis and I haven't seen Jimmy since the early 70's.

To summarize, we will be a VERY good team next year. Sure, we need a kicker, and our defense struggled but we have arguably the BEST QB I have ever seen wear the blue and white (and black)! I felt we needed a LOT of luck to win today and we had some but not enough. UNI is a very good team but they should look out for the 2011 Sycamores. My.... what a difference a year makes.

Thanks to Boda for adding a NEW dimension to my trips to Terre Haute. I have never had to worry about seeing people I know. I have hung around campus for 44 fricking years for God's sake. My bathroom art has made meeting people pretty easy in Terre Haute, but meeting all my new SP friends today made it a special day. Again, thanks to Tailgating Tom and your wonderful friends. That started the day off on a great note. A win would have been special but new friends, great food and a renewed spirit at November football games made the trek well worth it. Now let's get that elusive ROAD WIN~

I missed the whole first half, but I got to Memorial Stadium at halftime, and witnessed the whole 2nd half. The crowd was pumped, and I thought for awhile there, that we were going to come back and win that game like we did against Missouri State.

Northern Iowa fan here. Just wanted to stop in and tell everyone good game.

It's great to see Indiana State football building back respectability and not just being a scrimmage as you have been recently. First time in a long time that I can remember being nervous heading into a game with Sycamores. I like to have quality competition all around-it makes everyone better and will better prepare Valley schools for play-off football. You guys have a lot to look forward to.

First off, I hope you are able to win the last two games this year and at least force some consideration from the play-off committee. Not that I have faith in the committee to take a team without 7 D-I wins, but I think you deserve the look. More importantly than that, I hope you are able to get the wins to have a winning season. I know you only need one win for a winning season, but why not be greedy?

Secondly, I hope your coaching staff is able to parlay this season into some solid recruiting to build depth. I know you have almost everyone back next year, so it's important to bring in youngsters who can grow and not just jucos or transfers that help with a quick fix.

Improving next year is the next hurdle for you guys and I hope you clear it. Well, except for your trip to Cedar Falls of course. The future is looking bright in Terre Haute. Trent Miles has my vote for coach of the year.

See you for hoops season, UNI-ISU always seem to have good battles there, too.

Thank you Khan4Cats, that really shows what respect some UNI fans have for Indiana State. Some other teams claim to penalties as how we have beat them, but UNI beat us fair and square, although we were missing our 3 LB's.

Those kind words are appreciated Kahn4Cats. I am sure that UNI will represent the MVFC well in the playoffs. Oh, one more thing. The Sycamores plan to win in your house next year; you wouldn't want it any other way. Should be a heck of a game.

Thanks for the good thoughts Khan4Cats. Nothin but respect for your team and your fans. Haven't run across a Panther fan yet that I didn't like. Good luck to you all the rest of the year.
To Bally44...I've read your posts here and always thought you were a topshelf individual. Meeting you in person proved I was spot on. It was a pleasure having you stop by the RV. I'm glad you enjoyed yourself. Looking forward to shareing food and beverages in the future. It sure was fun meeting new Tree fans. One can never have too many friends. You are all welcome to stop by at home games and on the road. GO TREES !:sycamores:

Back at you, TOM. It was a great day, a tough loss but the whole "tailgating" thing with Tom and his group might have been the highlight of the day. And to the rest of you......take him up on his offer! (and don't forget to ask him about his DRY RUB, it is incredible*)! Trust me when I say, I WILL BE BACK~

*Note: we ARE talking food here. :-)

I really enjoyed the game. The lack of calls on pass interference hurt us, but we did get lucky on the blocked punt. I thought the attendance was great for a November game, considering our recent history. The crowd didn't seem as "into" the game as I had hoped for with so much riding on the outcome. I know the coach wasn't too happy with the crowd when leaving the field at half time. Maybe we can build on this and rock Hulman Center for basketball, then baseball and back to football next fall. Anything short of 12,000 next fall to watch the unbeaten Sycamores will be a disappointment.
