I personally would like to see them hire John Gruden or Brian Billick - both might be unrealistic however. Gruden used to coach at ND and has always said that he would like to be back at ND at some point, plus I like his style!

Gruden just inked a contract extension for MNF. The hot rumor is either Bob Stoops from Oaklahoma or Brian Kelly from Cincy......I'm hearing Stoops

The first thing ND will do, and Tom confirmed this with his sources under the Golden Dome, is go offer an unbelieveably large pile of money to Urban Meyer. Don't know if he'd leave Florida, but he was a coach at ND under Lou Holtz, so the desire to return the program to that glory could be a challenge he would like. I've also heard Stoops, and Kelly from Cincinnati is a no-brainer. I just saw on an ESPN insider headline (no way I'm paying to read stuff on ESPN...) that the coach at North Carolina is a candidate.

Some have said Tony Dungy, but I don't see ND taking a risk on another pro coach who has never recruited in college, nor had to develop talent at the college level. Plus, I can't see Dungy going to the ridiculous pressure cooker that is ND football at this stage in his life. Why would he???

ND football is FUBAR. As a HUGE ND football fan from my years living in South Bend, I hope they get it right this time. Please, please don't let them hire a high school coach!!!!:(

But alas, if I had to choose between ND football winning the championship or my beloved Sycamores, I'd have to go with KMac and the boys!!!

Charlie Weis is out after five seasons as Notre Dame coach.

A member of Notre Dame's coaching staff told ESPN's Joe Schad on Monday that the staff was informed of the decision in an afternoon meeting.

The New York Daily News first reported that Weis was out. The Associated Press also is reporting that Weis has been ousted.

Notre Dame players have scheduled a mid-afternoon players meeting that will include a vote on whether they want to play in a bowl game after a 6-6 season. Athletic director Jack Swarbrick has said he will consider the players' wishes in deciding on a bowl trip.

The member of the coaching staff told Schad a decision hasn't been made on an interim coach; Notre Dame will wait to see whether the players will decide if they want to participate in a bowl game first.

Weis was not in his office early Monday, though there were no announcements about whether he will return for a sixth season. Swarbrick has said he will make that decision within the next few days.

I don't see Urban Meyer leaving UF, why would he? He's already a God down there, has a ton of money and will always get virtualy any major recruit he wants at Florida. I'd say there is a 0% shot of Dungy taking the job. He enjoys what he's doing now to much.

I think Stoops would be a great hire. I'm not quite sure about Kelly. I think they should look at Peterson from Boise State. Urban Meyer is the best choice but there's no way he's leaving Florida.

Gruden? Does he have any college coaching experience? His father coached at ND with Dan Devine, but I don't think Jon ever coached at ND. Once again, would ND go after someone who has never recruited or developed college players. Not after the whole "developing" thing seemed to be a big problem for Weiss.

One thing is for sure, it will be interesting to watch this search. Who turns it down and who actively lobbies for it. Sit back, pop the popcorn, grab a cold one, and enjoy the entertainment!!!

I could see him leaving Florida. Hell he's already won 2 championships and maybe a third. Maybe he wants a new challenge. Some coaches like it. But I honestly don't think he will leave.
I could care less who gets hired. Just as long as they get it done quick so I don't have to see it on ESPN for the next 2 months.

He didn't coach at ND, I mis spoke his father was an assistant at ND and he obviously lived in South Bend. He started out as an assistant coach in college before he made his way onto the NFL scene.

Thanks! I didn't know he had coached in college...that was the downfall of Weiss, I think...

Charlene Weiss has done an outstanding job

at North Crooked -- I wish they would extend his contract for another 10 years!

Charlene's 'downfall' (like Bob Davie's) -- neither has EVER been a head coach; college or pro

nd needs to face facts; they're fast becoming irrelevant in the college football scene -- seriously, they last contended in 1991? 1992?

ah gotta love the hate for the irish!!!

You don't think he has an opt out clause in that contract if a Pro or College team comes knocking? Come on...

I have a hard time believing that he would turn down a chance to coach at ND since he has expressed interest in having that job.

When he signed the contract he said it was to end any current or near future coaching rumors. At the time he had already been rumored for ND,Louisville,Michigan,Cleveland (NFL) and St.Louis (NFL) just to name a few.

Clearly he could leave but I think he knew what was going to be out there and is having fun doing MNF.

Give him the package

ND give Urban the package deal, house , car, vac home, all the fringe benifits, then make him a 10 year 100 million deal that with bonuses of winning NT will pay him 15 mill a season plus endorsements

Notre Dames problem is this . Yes they do have a very rich tradition in football i will grant you that however tradition doesnt pay the bills anymore. The academic restrictions they have at Notre Dame is so high they miss out on all the really good ( not so smart ) defensive players. Charlies teams could always put up the numbers look at the scoring they did this year as proof. But just as the Chargers in the Dan Fouts era they score 40 points but they give up 41 . Defense wins championships! Lower your admission standards to compete with the rest of the world you might start getting the great recruiting classes once again .

Still...hmmm....Florida weather vs South Bend weather? Recruiting at UF compared to recruiting at ND?.....I'm staying in Gainesville!
