I'm really feeling good about our chances to bring home a victory and ultimately the Championship. We haven't hit all cylinders yet this season. Hopefully we can amp up our defense against Tulsa & take it to the next level.
Lastly, our offense is progressing quite nicely, however... if we make the extra pass, that would take a potent offense and turn it into a lethal offense. [emoji91]

I posted this in the PJ thread, it resonates here too...

In the radio post game, Lansing was very specific about the loss to Tulsa in Alaska two years ago. Even went as far to say that that game probably cost us an at-large bid to the NCAA. He wants to beat them. And with Devonte as the guy who had the ball in his hands at the end of that loss, you know he wants this game too. I'm excited.

An extra pass followed by a bad shot = that is what we re doing now.

There were 86 free throws shot in the Tulsa/Ohio game yesterday. I don't know if that is a result of Tulsa's style of play or just a one-game thing, but if we struggle and shoot our normal 60% from the line we may have problems. Tulsa shoots over 70% as a team from the line.

We can't ignore the fact, that we as a team aren't the most prolific free throw shooting team in the nation. I GET THAT, I UNDERSTAND THAT.

However, I believe that our guys are going to do whatever it takes to get the job done.

Effort and Desire are the intangible assets that don't always show up in the stat column and is often overlooked in forums such as this. IJS[emoji56] [emoji93] [emoji93] [emoji93]

Need better shot selection and "in your face defense". Need to make Tulsa uncomfortable.

I'm not so sure about that. Tulsa looks as if they are a team that will shoot themselves "in or out of the game". I'm thinking we should play a match-up zone defense with max pressure on Woodard and Harrison. Let there role players try to beat us.
To tell you the truth, we were exposed yesterday. Our zone offense is not what it should be.

Thoughts and comments please..

Coach needs to have a long talk with Jim Boheim at Syracuse about how to really play a zone. The closest thing I can compare it with for its effectiveness is the full court press that John Wooden used at UCLA. Both defenses totally intimidate the opponent before they even got on the floor.

His zone is only legendary bc of the freak athletes he recruits to play in it. News flash, we can't get a roster full of those that can walk and chew gum at the same time lol.. I do agree however that we do need to implement some sort of zone as a change up to throw teams off who have gotten hot against our man...Lansing is a pretty darn good man to man coach, but certain matchups/ situations do call for something else.

The most dramatic zone Wooden used at UCLA was that 2 -- 3 half court press zone. It was designed, not to disrupt the opponent's offense, but to steal the ball or cause a turnover every time. And it worked magic for them.
The key man is the middle guy in the "3" -- he has to be smart, willing to take risks, anticipate, and either steal the ball himself or double team to force a bad pass so another player intercepts. At Springs Valley we ran this under Jim Jones with Charlie Carnes as our middle "3"guy; Lafayette Jeff ran something like this several years ago. A lot of teams struggled to even get the ball across the line, with turnover after turnover.

Could Brown or Smith be ISU's middle "3" ? ? ?

Brown and Smith are both capable middle men.
