The move is solely based on the fact that he has had nagging tendinitis in his throwing elbow since he arrived on campus last fall. He has gone through numerous rehab stints with it over the last year and each time it fails to heal. It got to the point this summer where he couldn't throw without a high level of pain, so after consulting numerous specialists they suggested getting a cortisone shot as the last option of treatment. There was a chance this would do more damage than good, but it was O'Leary's only real option if he wanted to stay at QB, which he did. Unfortunately, the shot didn't help the healing process any and actually made it worse, so after a final MRI last week he made the decision to retire the arm.
After sitting down with the coaches that day, they decided to move him to WR. With his athleticism and knowledge of all positions on the field, I think he has a chance to be highly successful over the course of his career.
