I grew up on the musicans he influenced and I believe 80s & 90s country is some of the best country music we ever had. After the 90s things changed in country music and I'm not sure that his influence is still present. But the 3 guys in this video tribute were what I grew up on!

As Joni Mitchell wrote an sang in Big Yellow Taxi...don't it always seem to go, that you don't know what you got till its gone

He was part of the outlaw (raw/unpolished/real) country movement that began to die off in the 80s. To me, the 90s are when popular country music began to lose its soul again and it's been lost ever since. You find it's influence in rock music now more than you do country. Today's country is polished pop garbage. You have to hunt for good country music now, good music of any genre really, but it's out there in abundance. I'm lazy though, so I just rely on backlandradio.com.

We can agree that country music today is pretty much trash.

But when you were born in 86' and start appriciating music sometime in the 90s then I can attest to you that I grew up on several musicians that were influenced in some way or another by greats like Haggard, Jennings, Jones etc. If you were listening to Randy Travis, Garth, George Strait, Vince Gill, Clint Black - guys like that. Country didn't go wrong with those guys I can assure you of that.

Strike Garth from that list (Travis - Black) and you have something... He's a pop star wearing a cowboy hat.

In fact; of that group, you have Strait and Gill and everyone else...

But I agree with you, country continues to morph into pop BUT I think they said the same thing with a LOT of Chet Atkins' production work... (aka The Nashville Sound)

Like sports, music is just following the money trail. It is cool more main stream to like Country music now. The new sound has brought many, many more fans and their wallets. Chris Stapleton's seems to be finding a grove. When I listen to him I hear and think of Hank JR.

Good point. They have that "bad boy country" that has become kind of cool again. Eric Church found a bit of a niche in it and you have Stapleton which just blew up! Those guys defiantly more of that rock country type of sound.

Yes. I was watching the CMA's and Stapleton thanked Jason Aldean. He said Aldean found him playing in a rock band and converted him to country.
