The county wants to spend $219,000 to tear down Old Mill Dam on Otter Creek in North Terre Haute. A lot of the locals don't seem to happy about it. My guess is some local politician's cousin must need a job. 🙄

Saw that. Also see in this article where they say it's because it's dangerous, but the last death there was 13 years ago, so why the push all of a sudden? I'm curious how much would be needed to preserve it and possibly make it safer and protect the county from liability.

In June 2010, Vigo County recorded its own such fatality.

Twenty-one-year-old Tyler E. Jackson was swept over the Markle Mill Dam after entering the water just a few yards south of the dam. The creek was filled to bank level with fast-flowing water fed by recent heavy rains. It was the first drowning at the dam site since becoming a county park in 1999.

In '84 a group of localz did a temporary concrete repair to the top of the dam, which didn't hold long. As one who grew up a mile from there (our farm was split in half by Otter Creek), and watched the construction of the CURRENT bridge crossing the creek, I empathize w/ the NTH public. In '61, they forced consolidation upon NTH, forcing the closure of Otter Creek HS and consolidating w/ Garfield, even though a BRAND NEW school had been built SPECIFICALLY for HS. My Dad was on the Advisory Board that built BOTH the new Elementary & HS. That county-wide vote was close, w/ most city TH people supporting the closure. See:

I'll close by stating that the current adjoining Forest Park owner, Greg Gibson, no doubt is expediting this process. But at the very least, Vigo should provide a small park w/ fishing pier to keep residents long-cherished memories alive. See:

No more canoeing upstream from the dam. I had better get a few trips in before September.
Wonder if they'll close the "cave," thwarting the curiosity of archeologist wannabe's? Btw, according to the "expert hydrologists," the water level will return to "normal" after the sediment close to the dam erodes. They do anticipate some degree of channel dredging amidst this whole process. There are some good posts on this in the "Markle Mill Dam" link I posted earlier.

Btw, have you launched from the Hasselburger site yet?

Have they put an official launch site in at Hasselburger now? If you can maneuver your way through downed trees you can go upstream towards the dam from Hasselburger. I have fished from below the dam to Clinton road bridge before....but have never tried the stretch from Clinton road to hasselburger.

Truthfully, Otter Creek rarely ever has enough water to canoe or kayak on (without having to get out and drag your boat). Last year I was feeling very adventurous and kayaked it up to Burnett from Old Mill Dam, but it was pretty much a log jammed disaster once I got up stream from where Sulphur Creek flows into Otter Creek at. I'm also only 150 pounds and when I took a friend who is 180 pounds he couldn't make it through some of the places I could without getting out. I've had better luck with the Big Raccoon in southern Parke County and only go on Otter Creek after Covered Bridge Fest is over when they start draining the lake. If the dam comes down I doubt I'll ever go on Otter Creek again.

I don't live in TH anymore, so I'm not privy if they ever completed the Project:
