Yeah, don't know how someone can survive on $170,000 a year, or whatever it is.
I don't think it is a matter of survival, its a matter of "if they are going to offer it to me, I am going to take it."
No matter how much money you make, you get used to it and one day it doesn't seem so great anymore. Years ago I switched jobs and almost doubled my salary. When that first check arrived, I thought I had hit the lottery. Now, several years later, I don't think twice about it because I have gotten used to living with my new salary.
Even though I love what I do and where I do it, if someone came to me and said I will pay you twice what you make now for a similar position, I would have a hard time not giving them the chance to tell me more.

I don't disagree with what you say. However I prefer to change the bold portion to: am I going to take it? We all make decisions much like this. We decide if there are things more important than money. We have different answers to that question. I met nothing derogatory by my remark. Personally I found many things more important that $$$.
So, you're not driven by $$$...
For coaches (esp. ass't) when they get the chance to double, perhaps triple their salary by moving from the MVC to a BCS school, I can't fault them; if a new AD and/or univ President rolls in and wants to put 'their mark' on the Athl Dept; an entire coaching staff may be fired (and they may not work for 1-2 years as they look for another gig.)
I don't have to LIKE the system but I do UNDERSTAND it.
I have found more important things than just $$$. After all, I was a teacher for 42 years. 'nuff said--don't want to get into a discussion on that topic. Not pertinent on this topic.
