Penn State has issues with QB
By Adam Rittenberg
ESPN.com

Penn State will open preseason practice Thursday afternoon with questions about its depth at quarterback.

Junior Kevin Newsome is leaving the program and likely will seek a transfer, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and 247sports.com are reporting. A team spokesman could not confirm Newsome's departure when contacted by ESPN.com.

Only days ago, Penn State coach Joe Paterno said redshirt freshman quarterback Paul Jones was academically ineligible. Add Newsome's reported departure and Penn State would be left with only two quarterbacks -- sophomore Rob Bolden and junior Matt McGloin -- who have game experience.

Bolden, who sought his release from the team in January and was denied, said last month that he's committed to staying at Penn State.

Newsome competed for the starting job last summer but slipped behind both Bolden and McGloin on the depth chart. He did not travel to the Outback Bowl as he contemplated his future but remained with the Nittany Lions through spring practice.

Paterno has said the starting job for the 2011 season almost certainly will go to Bolden or McGloin.

Newsome served as Penn State's backup quarterback as a freshman in 2009. He completed 14 of 24 passes for 144 yards in his career, and added 161 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

Damn. I love turmoil. What a great time to have only TWO experienced quarterbacks. I am sure they'll find a passer or two from a nearby cave or something but it does help to be scrambling at that position a month away from the game. If an inexperienced, shaky quarterback becomes one-dimensional in his "first" game we all know that our chances of an upset are far greater.

what else is the kid going to say

Here is the inequity of college sports regarding a player’s rights versus the institution’s.

Institution of higher education: We wont’ be renewing your scholarship for your sophomore year even though you worked hard, got in no trouble, earned a 3.5 grade point, never argued with a coach, etc. We know it was our mistake and not yours but someone has to pay for it and that someone is you. Good luck to you and don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

Player (“Athlete-Student”): I made a mistake in coming here and I’d like to transfer and play and pursue my education somewhere else.

Institution of higher education: No! And that’s final. Enjoy your remaining three years here. Oh yeah, thanks for the millions of dollars we’ll be earning off your sweat and blood.

Something is very wrong. It’s downright slavery.
