I am just wondering. Why do you think you don't see us taking a shot or reaching out to some of these "basketball school" players who are entering the portal or a 3-5 star player? I understand we recruit players that fit our philosophy and that aspect, but it seems the hundreds of players posting they receive interest from ISU are not multiple star or come from a basketball school, it's like we are more searching for unknown diamonds. Are these 3-5 star players all about the NIL is why? Don't they play how we play and fit our need? Is there just not the interest in us yet from that group so we don't seek them out? Are we waiting for these guys to become more desperate as the portal gets closer to close and they don't have options? This is NOT a gripe on the guys we signed, (they all are good pickups for us) or complaining on the recruiting we have done, I would give our incoming group a B+ for us. I just really want to understand HCJS mindset on P-5 or high star player recruiting since i can't recall seeing us mentioned as contacting anyone like this and i don't think we have ever really mentioned why we don't. I don't think it takes anymore effort to contact them as it does Joe Diamond in the Rough does it? Thanks Guys! hope this is a good discussion.

Have you listened to the interview Luke Martin just posted with Coach Schertz? I feel like he did a great job explaining how they approach recruiting and the portal. It seems that coach makes zero exceptions for players who dont fit the cultural identity....perhaps that is your answer?

They have.

Some kids are chasing NIL money. Some kids are chasing names -- be it coaches or programs. They have to sift through that and find the guy that likes our mix.

Nope haven't listened to it yet. usually save audios for my ride home from work.

I first had to see if this was a serious question. NIL Money, Name, and quickest way to get the NBA. Those 3 alone are battles we don’t win. Now throw in Schertz philosophy from the video just posted on recruiting and you have your answers.

Yup typical bottle nose effect:

Are they skilled enough? I mean we should be recruiting kids in the top half of D1.

Okay, well if they are skilled enough do they fit our system? Schertz is a big system guy so this answer is more of a premium than what most programs ask themselves.

Well if they fit our scheme do we actually need them? Perfect example is right now is we don't need another point guard.

Okay they fit EVERYTHING athletically. But are they coachable? Do they have that "it" factor? How do they handle adversity? How do they conduct themselves? Etc. This is a question only the coaches can answer during the recruiting process. We don't see this one unless there are major red or green flags out there on social media, message boards, etc.

Last question is. What does the athlete want? NIL? playing time? Championship? Launch them into a pro career? Be close to home? A degree?

So once you start with 1200+ prospects you quickly widdle it down to only a handful of players that fit yours and the athletes need.
