Aside from compiling his staff, I believe the other crucial topic on the agenda is retaining current Sycamores and inked recruits, filling in holes with transfers and then getting up to speed on the upcoming recruiting cycle.

I know Prettyman has asked prospects to speak with the new coach before making any decisions (several parents and players have told me so) so the hire fallout should be interesting over the next week or so.

The former Panther roster has pretty much already been picked over with several kids heading off to MVC foes and elsewhere, but it is interesting to see where Heller and company got their recruits from. Breaking it down, he had 24 prospects from Iowa, 3 from California, 2 from Illinois, 1 from New Jersey, 1 from Washington, 1 from Texas, 1 from Maine, 1 from Canada and 1 from Australia.

In looking at feeder schools that sent multiple players to UNI, Iowa Central CC, Des Moines Area CC and Kirkwood CC all sent 2 or more guys on the roster. Obviously it will be an adjustment moving to Indiana and getting into the staff discussion, it probably will make sense going after an experienced coach that has worked the Indiana area before.

Definitely very interesting things to look at and consider.

juco players? never!!!!

i mean...there is a big difference between playing in junior college and playing in division I...right????.....they can't prosper....lol.......yeah right....lol......

My son will be a senior in high school this year. He has received recruiting letters, emails, and a call from ISU. He has not received an offer yet, however ISU has been his first college choice through this whole process. His top reason for his decision is assistant coach Tyler Herbst. Coach Herbst seems to be a very good young coach and an excellent recruiter.

Well put TJames. Didn't we have a coach that went the JUCO route and that didn't pan out too well.

rgd....i was poking fun at some posters.....

who said that mitch hannahs wasn't qualified to be the head coach at indiana state because he was only a juco coach. that there was a big difference between coaching at the juco level and coaching at division I. i disagreed with them.

so i made the comment about juco players, that they obviously couldn't prosper at the division I level....lol....by using their argument.....about mitch......i know there are good jucos who have done well at isu.....just as there have been good juco coaches...who have done well at the division I coaching level.....the only difference is...they got a chance to prove it.....

Tom, in one post you say that you are willing to be a middle man for Coach Heller and the ISU baseball alums and then you turn around and post something like above. If you were coach Heller would you be comfortable using somebody with the bias that you are showing as a middle man? Isn't it time to move on?

hey 317.....

can't i tweek the people who were dissing mitch hannahs a litle bit? and i said nothing derogatory about coach heller. i said that i have offered to help him with alums and former players. and i will if he asks.

so now you can't tease some people a little bit? was just using their words about mitch in connection to juco players. oh well, so much for trying to lighten the mood here a little bit.

and, by the way, yes...i am biased....towards the scores of guys who played baseball at indiana state...i dont know coach heller, although i hope that i will get that chance...i do know a lot of those former players...who feel let down right now.....

Has anything changed with Heller announced as the new head coach? It probably would make sense to get in touch with him after he has a week or so to settle in.

If I'm not mistaken, it's a common practice for many of the top baseball schools use a compliment of JUCOs to supplement their HS recruits. Heck, I think quotes were even made by a couple former baseball players stating you can't win without them.

This JUCO argument is weak at best. Wasn't Brady Shoemaker a transfer to ISU after a JUCO stint?
Sure was. Quite a few of the better players came in off of prep at a JUCO. I went and took a look at rosters of teams in the Top 25 and most of them are littered with JUCO transfers.
