just wondering what people think is an acceptable time period to rebuild a football program that was pretty much on life support under the former athletic administration.

trent has been head coach now for just over one year. i know what i think. as i've said before, it took more than one year for the program to get into the position it was when trent took over. and i think its going to take more than just one year to rebuild the program. its going to take a couple of seasons to get the job done right.

trent didn't make the mess that was here when he arrived. but he has been trying to clean it up as best he can with the resources that he has available. but there are no quick fixes anymore.

i do find it funny when i read other websites and people take potshots at trent because he cleaned house, player-wise, saying that he swept out good players with the bad. the program had won one game in two years. there weren't that many good players here to begin with and he kept most of them around. the ones that left did so either because of academic reasons, because they wanted to move on or because they couldn't, or wouldn't, buy in to what trent was teaching.

but i know that there are some people who want, have to have and need instant gratification. get a new coach, turn the program over NOW!!!!!....lol...win NOW!!!!!....lol.......

so what do you think??????

I always believe you've got to give any football coach at least 5 years. This will allow him to recruit for several years and have two of his own classes as upperclassmen in that 5th year.

I think in another year, as long as they're competitive in a majority of the games and progress is being shown, he should have no issues. I think by year 5, he should be able to win 6 games or more depending on how well he has recruited and how well the staff has developed those players.

I figure for the first five years, the only requirement is that improvement be shown each year. We didn't win a game last year, but we were noticably better at the end of the season than we were at the beginning. Build on that, take that next step. As long as those next steps are being completed, I'd say the coach should be OK. If the improvement continues, the wins will come, as will the crowds, as will the recruits. Anyone expecting a playoff appearance in the first three or four years is smokin' something...although I'd be really happy if we pulled off the "impossible...":wordyo:

I agree with Indytreefan. I'd say five to six years, but we really need a win or two this year to get things started. We need to continue to recruit well and see progress. By year five or six it would be nice to see us competing for the MVC championship.

I say five years is about right, I don't think there is any way we don't beat Quincy. We realistically should have won three games last year. Trust me last years team might have been the best team ever to go winless in a season. By the end of they year they were definently competing and it was nice to watch. These kids believe in Coach Miles and you can tell he believe in them. With Stutzreim, and possibly more transfers I say they win 3-4 games next year (Quincy being a lock).
