I talked to a member of the team and he said they open up in the Metrodome against Minnesota...As of that he said that's the only highlight of the schedule. I expect the new guy to come in and get some W's and build at least something first..

"Metrodome"

If Heller thinks he's gonna move forward beyond Meggs, scheduling "Metrodome" isn't gonna cut the mustard. I will say this about Meggs...he clearly understood the dynamics of early-season OUTDOOR warm weather training & conditioning v. indoor, and his scheduling reflected this.

Current plans call for trips to face Minnesota at the Metrodome, a return trip to The Citadel and a trip to Texas to face University of Texas San Antonio. Don't know what else at this point. I imagine they will put out a confirmed schedule late this year.

Minnesota was 40-19 with a final RPI of 25
Citadel was 37-22 with a final RPI of 79
UT-San Antonio was 32-24 with a final RPI of 84
Those are better than all but one team from the MVC last season - Missouri State had the best RPI in the MVC last year finishing at 67.
I think that schedule would prepare us pretty well.

Early season scheduling lays the foundation for late-season growth. It's a tenuous line that must be balanced among:

-personal confidence & team bonding
-diversity of opposition
-practice drills
-conditioning

On a trip to Texas, I would hope that no less than 5 or 6 games could be squeezed into less than a week. The same for South Carolina.

While playing in the Metrodome might be "neat," the peripheral values associated with such a trip are limited, given the length of the trip & geography. Check the Baseball America top 25 final poll last year...how many cold weather teams are represented?

maybe Heller didn't schedule the games this year. Some schedules are planned a year ahead so maybe this is the schedules Meggs had in mind and Heller decided to stick with it? I could be wrong though..

just as a point of reference....

Bob Warn took the Sycamores to the Metrodome to play in the University of Minnesota tournament in 1985. We beat Minnesota for the tournament championship.

That year the Sycamores posted a 57-22 record and lost to Wichita State in the title game of the MVC tournament.

57 wins is still a single-season school record. It was probably the best team that we had in school history. Had the 1985 team made the NCAA tournament (they took fewer teams then), we might have won the NCAA tournament....yes, we were that good. We were led by pitcher Blaise Ilsley.

Dick Martin, 25 yr. Athletic Trainer for the Twins and the now-deceased team owner, Calvin Griffith ,both lived in Melbourne, FL during the off-season. Martin, who received his M.A. from IU in Athletic Training (I think it was the only graduate program in America at the time), also officiated FHSAA basketbal and was good at it.

Martin is now retired in Melbourne. He owns a charter fishing business for anyone interested in offshore fishing and some good MLB baseball stories!

I recall attending the NCSS (National Council for the Social Studies) Convention held in Minneapolis during the Spring of '78. The various area cities were still haggling over where to put the Metrodome at this time. I'll never forget the IDS Tower & international food court...Minneapolis is a progressive city and well-connected to the World despite its land-locked status.

I might add that the '86 NCAA World Series squad opened the initial two (2) weeks of the season against Louisville, Arkansas & Oral Roberts...a mid-South experience.

just had some off-the-field issues when he was playing in the minors.

Was at ISU when Boi was there in 86-87. He was definitely not there to get an education. Very arrogant, but alas, I was a freshman who was not on the team. Ladies liked him. How did Warn ever find him/get him. Didn't he go to high school in IN?
