SIU (Homecoming) Game Thread

WANTED: Passionate Sycamore Fanatics. That You?

Register NOW to join our community of die-hard Sycamore fans.

I don’t really know the circumstances because I don’t follow 1AA football but all-and-all happy to see us get a win on homecoming! Happy for Mallory who’s a really weird scapegoat for some of our fan base who don’t want to acknowledge very obvious barriers to success no matter who is coaching football at this institution.

The homecoming parade was fun for my two little kids but it’s such a depressing parade - the floats suck and the organization is very meh. On one hand you have a community that still shows up for it which is great but InState falls short in the show that they can put on.

Didn’t make it into the game myself - had the family. Just a beautiful day to tailgate and enjoy college football.

*Worth noting and really not a knock on InState football just a knock on InState fans/alumni collectively the amount of tailgates with a TV and Indiana Washington on is beyond depressing to me. I just wasn’t raised like that. These people tailgating at a (insert school) game and watching another in state school is super bizarre behavior to me. Care that much? Awesome. Stay home - fire up the grill and pop and coldie. It’s all the same. Better yet if you care that much you are an hour away just go experience it first hand you know? Don’t be a bitch.

How can the head coach in year eight NOT be a scapegoat? Do you want to blame this season on the 3d string punter? The past seasons on the walk-on DBs?

Mallory's the HC, it's his program, these are HIS players - same goes for any of the other head coaches

PLENTY of reasons why ISU football is in the state it's currently in; many, MANY of them predate Mallory but he's had eight seasons to build the program, limitations or not; he has the biggest piece of the overall Athl Dept budget, doesn't he?

Congrats to the team and staff for another Homecoming win; Mallory's 3rd...

Well said 4Q! I mostly criticize Mallory because of his ultra-conservative offensive play calling, that seems to hurt us more times than not. Even in this game we had 4th&1 near midfield with 2 minutes left in the half and we punted it, and ended up giving up 10 points before halftime. Spotting the opposing team 3 possessions (HCU, YSU, SIU) seems to be a theme this year too for whatever reason.

Now I will give credit where credit is due. That 17 play, 9:36, 98 yard TD drive was the most impressive drive I've seen from the Sycamores in years, maybe ever. I mean that's pretty much his offense working in perfection, right there. It only took 8 seasons to finally get it right, but it came at the perfect time in the game. It certainly helps that our QB can run and throw the ball very effectively too. That's something that we've not really had under Mallory, besides when we had Doyle Mallory's second season.

As hard as I am on Mallory at times, I've always defended him when people try to compare his teams to Lou West's. West won one game here in two and a half seasons, and Mallory has tripled that this season alone, so hopefully people will give that comparison a rest. West lost 18 straight games before winning a game, and then after that day the program lost another 33 straight games because of how far he drug the program into the ground. It's not even a close comparison. We're not storming the field anymore when we beat a 1 win team.

We have 3 years left under Mallory after this season. Who knows how it will go, but I'll still be supporting the program no matter what. Mallory's future might be dependent on if he can keep Elijah Owens long term. He's only a Redshirt Freshman and still makes Freshman mistakes, like getting strip sacked after trying to do too much on the promising opening drive, but I have high hopes that he'll become a special player here. The more he continues to improve, I think the better our offense will continue to get. Of course the other factor is praying that he stays healthy.

Yesterday was a fun day though. It didn't look too good at halftime, but it was a lot of fun watching us comeback and capitalize off of Saluki turnovers. Got to also give credit to the defense for forcing those turnovers and holding them scoreless in the second half. All in all it was certainly a team victory yesterday. Very happy with the Homecoming win and for the team!

virtually EVERYTHING you typed was true, 25 years ago, except the parade continues to decline, the crowds decrease... even in the 1980s, tailgaters listened to big ten games, just, far, FAR fewer TVs in tents... radio was the norm

Keep in mind what this Indiana team is doing. I remember reading an article back in The Bird days when Heaton hit that half court shot against New Mexico State. Guy said he was in his dorm room and it sounded like the entire building was going nuts. Guys running up and down the hallway just celebrating. Then he says, “By The Way, I go To Indiana University”
This IU football team is coming out of nowhere with a back up QB. It’s an interesting story, especially in Indiana.
We’ll see what they have in 3 weeks when they play Ohio State.

Much like us, Indiana has had a crazy easy schedule. Unlike us, they've taken advantage of it. Take a look at the Big 10 standings and who they've played. No one in the top 8. No one with a winning record in conference. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see them lose their next three. If they hold on and get to the playoffs, I expect them to be blown out in the first game. And I hope that's what happens. Screw IU.

Don’t doubt they will get killed by A SEC team if they make it to the playoffs. I’m looking at that Nebraska game and how Nebraska challenged Ohio State. Blew out Colorado as well. Just saying it’s a great story in college football. Carry on.

I never understood why he was given an extension last season unless it was Curtis' final slap back at the university

He was given the latest extension in the Spring of 2022. His resume at that point was:
2017= 0-11 / 0-8 MVFC
2018= 7-4 / 5-3 MVFC (should've made playoffs)
2019= 5-7 / 3-5 MVFC
2020 / Spring 2021= Only team in MVFC that wimped out on playing any games. That season was a free year for eligibility purposes too.
Fall 2021= 5-6 / 3-5 MVFC

Total= 17-28 / 11-21 MVFC
Total excluding 1st Season= 17-17 / 11-13 MVFC

Curt Mallory was initially extended through 2023 (last season) after the 2018 season. I have never understood why Clinkscales gave him an additional 4 years back in early 2022. Most of us that closely followed the program could tell the program was starting to head in the wrong direction. The next two seasons in 22 and 23 we completely fell off the cliff and went a combined 3-19, and two of those wins were against a WIU team that was comparable to Lou West's teams. There's no way Mallory would have survived that.

At this point I'm just glad we've picked up a few wins this seasons and have been relatively competitive most of the time. I want Mallory to win and build this program back up to where he had it, because I want ISU to win. I'm not anti-Mallory, I'm just anti-losing.

I think us football guys agree.

Just sayin’. Pretty shitty call

Southern Illinois was kind enough to suck at just the right time to give Indiana State the game and Indiana State was able to get around their awfulness at just the right time to get a win

Haven’t been on the edge of my seat like that since my nephews middle school game that was 8-6 in the 4th quarter.

Great win! Go Blue!
