The Starter Level
Anyone on here play slow pitch softball? I play and was just curious how many if any of the people on this board play. If you do play where do you play and what class are you if you do travel?

Play in two leagues - one of which ended last Friday, the other of which plays on Monday nights, not this Monday night though due to rain.

I usually play left field, left center, 2b or pitcher... I am not amazing by any means, but pretty solid defensively and an average hitter... I can only go to left, strait pull hitter. Somtimes can send one to left center.

I wish I did, but don't where to play or how old you have to be?

The Y on 1st Street in Terre Haute has a mens league which I play in on Sunday afternoon and I believe they have co-ed throughout the week. I believe there is a league in Brazil as well. I believe you have to be 18 at most places as well.

Are the leagues you play in around Terre Haute? When my team plays at The Y I usually play that middle spot right behind the pitcher because we run a five man infield. When I travel I usually play 1st when my whole team is there. I am like a utility guy though if we have a sub I usually move to where our regular was at. I hit to all fields but usually try to stay out of the middle. I have only played for about a year so I occasionally do go up the middle at times on accident.

One of the leagues is a co-ed league (interesting at times) that plays at Spencer Park on Terre Haute's North side, just off Lafayette Ave. that is a real deep fence, haven't seen anyone go yard or even close really.

The other is a mens league at the church just south east of Terre Haute North highschool. That fence not so deep and I have seen many balls hit out of that park.

I have only been playing for a year now - I couldn't really play before being in college and running track, don't think coaches would have liked that to much. lol I enjoy it because it helps me keep my competitive juices flowing and that's important to me. I played baseball until highschool, but softball is a different game and baseball is not much of an indicator of anything.

Really depends who you know and how serious of a league you play in. If you know the manager and they don't take it to serious you will see kids play from time to time even in Men's leagues.

However if it's a serious league and you have a serious manager then you better be at least 18.

I was the manager for my co-ed team, but I wouldn't have personally let anyone under the age of 18 play on my team. My mens league team is totally different, we have a kid (middle school) that plays in right (they attempt to hide him) and on occasion if they are hurting for players they play a female (nothing wrong with the in co-ed leagues) in right center.... So if you are playing Left Center (keep in mind you usually play with 4 outfielders) then you have to cover 3 positions, your own - right center and right (impossible to do) and yes I have range...

There was that city tournament over at Spencer Park about a week and a half ago and I seen several balls hit out of there from members of Budwieser, Last Call, and Outkast. They were some smoke jobs. Our softball team has hsoted a few tournaments over at that church field to raise money for us to travel to the state tournament and have seen a fair share of balls hit out of there as well. The Y field on 1st Street is a fastpitch field so many people can hit them out sometimes even on accident. Routine pop flys carry out of that park.

I love going to right field. I would have spotted that kid out and went after him. haha.

I played in a co-ed church league up by THN a couple of years ago. Some family members that played before talked me into it by telling me how fun it would be and how it didn't matter that I'm un-athletic. What ruined it for me was that several players on our team, including the coach's son, thought they were on their way to "The Show" when they were average slow-pitch softballers at best.

Used to play for YEARS. I was on a very competitive team for a long time. We started out at East Glen as a class D ASA team... we have placed 3rd in the state twice (2 different teams - many years apart). We then played exclusively at Spencer, winning the Wed. night league many times.. and playing ASA Class C.. Traveled to Bloomington, Crawfordsville, Fort Wayne, Indy, Avon, etc.

Softball in TH is pretty much dead.
"Back in the day" there were leagues every night of the week at East Glen, and 4 nights a week as Spencer. Then it was cut down to Spencer... then just one night at Spencer... It's sad.

Our team quit playing about 5 years after the Miken bats ruined slow pitch softball. ANYONE could use one of those bats and hit a 340 ft. home run.... and I mean ANYONE.

It is starting to come back with the younger crowd in Terre Haute. My team was going to play at Spencer this year but it was more expensive than the Y, got 8 games instead of 10, and we were also told if the games were rained out at Spencer that they would not be made up. Also anyone but this guy can hit 340 ft bombs with a Miken bat. I would like for Terre Haute to have a bigger field to play a league in.

Slow pitch softball is a blast. Unless you have people who take it way too serious. Don't get me wrong I was a comptetior when I played in high school and college but when guys get pissed over losing a slow pitch softball game, it just takes the fun out.

I played league ball for 15 years or so. Other than the nagging injuries, I wouldn't have given it up for anything. About half of my games were co-ed and I must admit, that made it even better~

Good story here....

If you knew me you would probably appreciate it even more. But playing in my first ever softball game this summer and it's a mens church league by Terre Haute North - pretty solid league for the most part by my standards. Anyway the first game I play we get killed - more than a 10 run rule, they like 15 run ruled us and I am fuming, not going to let anyone else see that but just kind of mad inside. Again you have to know me, it's just who I am and what keeps me going. Anyway we get done and they are like alright guys gather around and the manager whom I work with starts talking to us and then says let's say a prayer...

The first thing that goes through my mind is, "ahhh hell know, I wanna be pissed - how can I be pissed and pray at the same time"? So I take off my hat suck it up and pray - ok great now that's done with I can go back at being mad.

So I get in the car and call my dad (whom I am pretty close with) "dad we got killed in softball, you wont believe what they did after the game"? They had a team prayer, man I just wanted to be pissed - but I can't be pissed and pray that doesn't make sense...

You know what my dad said - well that sounds like the type of league you ought to be in, that's probably going to be healthy for you... You'll get over it.

Yeah I got over it - but that's not the point! lol No all kidding aside it's a fun game I enjoy it. I like to pretend that I have a chance of being on Top 10 plays every night - I will even make the Sports Center sound effect... I'm a kid still I know.

The church league is far from solid. No competition there at all.

LOL! Yeah my team that I play on is not very good - I guess what I was saying was their are a few solid players and a few solid teams. Not really any top to bottom GOOD teams I guess you are right about that. Just a little more serious than my co-ed league that I play in.

I sub over there every now in then. Tomorrow will be the 3rd time i sub there this year. I just go and get some cuts in. I played SS about 3 weeks ago and hit the 1st Basemen in the chest with the ball twice only to watch him drop the ball both times.

The Y has a few real solid teams over there. It kind of hurts some of those better teams that the field is so small though. You are allowed 1 HR per inning there. We played a 3 inning game there where 5 of the "outs" we made left the yard because after the 1st homer of the inning is hit then the rest of the home runs that inning are automatic outs.

Kind of hurts? The fence is 195!
Outfielders STAND farther back than that while playing on a real field. - SERIOUSLY, not an exaggeration!

We USED to play 1 game a year on such short fences... the "Snow Ball Tourney". It's just CRAZY to play men's slow pitch softball on fields like that.

I know I play on bigger fields all the time. The Y is only place in town with a league on the weekend. Hell it might be the only league period other than the church league.
