I was director of admissions during the late 70's and I will assure you that we benefited for the success of all of the athletic teams. Best PR you could buy.
he's been surprisingly silent during all of this...unless i have missed some of his pronouncements against the athletic department since the basketball team won the mvc tournament....he must be really stewing after all of this...lol.....
is what I have been saying for years.....athletic success DOES translate into increased admissions and more alumni interaction/imput.
I said it after the 1978-79 season and I said it after the 2000-2001 season....and there are some people who continue to dispute it.....like Gary Daily....
the publicity that the school has and is receiving thanks to the success of the basketball program this season, especially in the state of indiana, amounts to a lot of free publicity for the school.
if you tried to pay for this kind of positive publicity, it would cost the school a lot more than what the athletic department costs......so the school is getting a bargain in the process......
I have gone on-line to try to buy a blue, long-sleeved T-shirt in large or x-large. All gone that don't say a specific sport on it. Lots of NCAA stuff already, but the university should get some T-shirts now!
Pope and his brother — both college professors and fans of their alma mater, Brigham Young University — researched data on applications and incoming students’ SAT scores from the years 1983 to 2002 at 330 colleges. They also looked at those schools’ success in the NCAA basketball tournament and Division I football.
Their conclusion? “If you make it to the NCAA Tournament, you’re going to see a bump in applications,” said Pope, assistant professor of behavioral science at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.
