CARBONDALE, Ill. – Indiana State's Geremy Guerrero was named the Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Year on Tuesday and answered with a complete-game effort as the two-seeded Sycamores defeated No. 6 seed Illinois State, 5-2, at Itchy Jones Stadium in the opening round of the MVC Championship Wednesday.
Our problem in the last two series has been outside of our Friday starter (Guerrero) no one else has been a consistent presence on the mound. If we can get a solid outing on the mound tomorrow it will go a long way.
Based upon the prior SIU series, I'd mothball LHP's Grauer & Weaver for starting roles. The Saluki's feasted on both in GM's 2 and 3. We had reasonable success w/RHP's Jache (relief of Grauer) ,Ridgeway (relief of Weaver) and Frey (relief of Drake in Gm4). Hannah's needs to keep the SIU hitters off-balance, thus should mix the P formula of L & R/velocity & breaking pitches.
I would agree that this game seems to be the kind where you throw several pitchers out there and see if you can get 2+ innings out of each. Piece together a solid game from several sources. Then bring Weaver or Grauer out for tomorrow’s game. Both have struggled down the stretch and didn’t show up against SIU. Unless you are confident they learned a lot in their start against the Salukis and have a good game plan to fix the problems I say go with a patchwork of relievers tonight.
Three (3) weeks ago I was really high on Drake as a RHP starter, but unfortunately, he's not shown much in his last couple outings. In the SIU Game #4, he was rocked for 4 runs & 6 hits in only 4 IP. And he's a 5th yr. transfer from W. Illinois. Didn't Ridgeway come out of the clouds in the '19 MVC Championship and win a game in the clutch? I think he also threw a good 4 or 5 IP v. Vandy in the NCAA in Nashville.

Grauer can be really good if he's TUNED, but he can also have trouble locating his spots and get brutalized by the hitters. I really had high hopes for him, but his continuity of performance is nowhere near Jeremy. As far as Weaver, his lack of control has been his demon. He seems "tight" out on the mound. I'm disappointed that he's not come back from his injury, but that's baseball.
Reviewed back to the DBU series on 4/24, where he was SP in Sat. Gm #1 of DH. Cline had 4.2 IP, w/ 5 H, 6 R, 4 BB & 2 WP. The Sycs lost 6-5 in 7 innings. This pretty much set the tone for the 2nd game 9-0 blowout by DBU

Fast forward 3 weeks to Gm#3 of the SIU serie on 5/15. In the 11 inning 8-7 loss, it was Cline's WP that allowed the winning run to score. I believe he only faced 3 batters. See:
He's another LH in an already crowded LH staff. That WP which allowed SIU to score the ultimate game clincher no doubt has left a sting on the coaching staff.
Btw, Grauer had a nice game in UE#4, won by ISU 13-10. He came on in the 4th & had 4.1 IP, only 2 H and 0 runs. But the Saluki offense is a much different beast.

Well he’s right handed and has a 4-2 record with a 3.89 ERA. One wild pitch or bad game is not removing him from use. Have you seen Tristan Weaver pitch? I’d say he was battling an illness or injury.

I agree 100%...not sure why Cline isn't being utilized as either a SP or RP. And yes, Weaver's control is horrible, and frankly doesn't warrant being in the starting rotation. He missed the '19 season w/ injury, any idea re: type?

Finally discovered the nature of Tristan's problem...he's been battling a GROIN INJURY all season. Pretty much explains the "tightness" which I mentioned earlier in his delivery.
Indiana State baseball picked up a series victory over the University of Alabama at Birmingham Saturday afternoon after rallying from a two-run deficit in the eighth to win, 10-8, at
