SYCAMORES CAGE BOBCATS 2-1 FOR FIRST WIN OF SEASON
Senior Katlin Owens Knocks Home Two Goals In ISU Victory
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Indiana State University women’s soccer team tallied two goals in the first half and withstood a constant second half attack from the visiting Ohio University Bobcats to earn their first win of the season, 2-1, on Friday night at Memorial Stadium in front of 212 fans.
After controlling the possession and pace of the game for much of the first half, the Sycamores (1-4-1) took the early lead in the 22nd minute, after a failed pass in the Ohio defense left senior Katlin Owens alone in front of the goal to put Indiana State ahead 1-0.
Owens would tally her second goal of the game 13 minutes later, when passes from sophomores Katie Geyman and Alison Gasparovich found Owens once again in front of the goal. The goals were Owens’ second and third of the season, respectively.
“It was really exciting,” said senior Katlin Owens. “We got the season off to a rough start, but the team really picked it up tonight. Katie [Geyman] and Alison [Gasparovich] worked together to get me the ball and I just put a touch on the ball for the goal.”
The Bobcats (1-3-0) would mount a constant attack in the second half, taking ten shots with four on goal in the period. Ohio registered their lone goal of the game in the 77th minute when, after a save by goalie Taylor Nelson, the ball came out to Cathryn Rogers who knocked the ball home.
“It’s a relief to get that monkey of our backs,” said head coach Erika True, “and you can’t beat that feeling. It’s a great time for the win to come as we have just a few more games before MVC play starts.”
For the game, Owens led the offensive attack for the Sycamores, recording two goals and four total shots (three on goal). Freshman Casey Allbright tallied three total shots with two on goal while sophomore Seyma Erenli and freshman Kelly Shulman both notched one shot on goal each.
Sophomore Emily Lahay started the game in goal for the Sycamores, but was forced to leave the game due to an injury in the 14th minute. Fellow sophomore Taylor Nelson entered the game and stopped six shots over the final 76 minutes while allowing one goal.
The Sycamores will not have much time to celebrate the victory over the Bobcats, as they return to action on Sunday when in-state rival Butler comes to Memorial Stadium. Kick-off is set from 1:00 p.m.
