SYCAMORES FALL IN EXHIBITION MATCH AT WESTERN MICHIGAN, 2-0
Indiana State Opens Regular Season Play On Friday At Southeast Missouri State
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Indiana State University women’s soccer team opened up the 2009 season today with an exhibition matchup with the Western Michigan University Broncos, falling 2-0 at the WMU Soccer Complex in Kalamazoo, Mich.
In the victory, the Broncos placed seven shots on goal for the game, scoring a pair of first half goals. The Sycamores took nine shots as a team, placing eight of them on goal.
"In the first half, we had a few breakdowns," said head coach Erike True, "but the team came out great in the second half and played with tons of energy. We tried to look at the second half as a different game and allowing no goals was great."
Sophomore Jessica Rosenberg led the way for the Sycamores, firing three shots on goal. Senior Katlin Owens tallied two shots on goal, while fellow senior Erin Bianchi, sophomore Laura Hall and freshman Casey Allbright all earned one each.
Western Michigan opened up the scoring in the 29th minute, when a cross from Bittney Pavlica connected with the feet of Ali Bagely who found the back of the net from 10 feet out. The Broncos doubled their lead seven minutes later when a long ball from Ali Jacobs eluded ISU goalkeeper Taylor Nelson to put the Broncos up 2-0.
Sophmores Nelson and Emily Lahay split time in the net on Sunday, with Nelson playing the first half and Lahay seeing action in the second. Nelson recorded three saves while allowing two goals. Lahay was able to hold the Broncos scoreless while making two saves.
Today’s game with Western Michigan will be the only exhibition match for the Sycamores during the 2009 season. The Sycamores open up regular season play with a four-game road swing, beginning Friday at 7:00 pm at Southeast Missouri State.
