I'm still hoping they use a T-Rex dinosaur as the mascot...
That would be good for the kids.... the dinosaur is a good connection to the children's museum... and could be wearing a team baseball jersey..

I am the owner of TerreHauteRex.com - the fans' site

Like most native Hautians, I was extremely excited when I heard that professional baseball was returning to Terre Haute. My initial motivation for the site was simple: find out the community's thoughts about the nickname, as I think it's one of the worst in sports.

We haven't had pro ball in TH for so long, it would have been the perfect opportunity to get the town involved in voting for the nickname, rather than just naming it after the funding corporation. I thought the club dropped the ball on this one.

In the future, http://www.TerreHauteRex.com will be a website that the fans can post to and write their own stories about the club.

Hope you enjoy the site.

A clarification on kvicroy's statement that this is "professional baseball." The Rex is a collegiate wood bat summer team with a variety of players. Generally, some are first stringers with their college teams, some haven't seen regular activity and then there's even some that were redshirts or who are rehabbing from injuries. It can be very fun baseball to watch...but I would say that the quality of play in the MVC is superior to what you'll see in summerball. The key to successful summer teams is not just a winning team (which is crucial) but the overall in-stadium experience with food, fun and a family atmosphere.

... but the overall in-stadium experience with food, fun and a family atmosphere.

Speaking from experience after attending multiple, small town minor league games, this trumps everything else. They better have lots of cold beer and good junk food.

Not everyone agrees...

Earlier this month, it was announced that the Prospect League, one of the top summer collegiate baseball league’s in the country, was expanding from 11 to 14 teams in time for the 2010 season. The three new clubs include the DeKalb County (Ill.) Liners, West Virginia (Beckley) Miners, and the new franchise in Terre Haute, Indiana. Liners and Miners? Yawnopotomus!

Beyond the nicknames themselves, DeKalb and Beckley have already unveiled their logos, which teeter on amateur and leave much to be desired in the uniqueness and creativity department. Don’t expect national attention here, nor branded merchandise sales beyond the local markets.

In Terre Haute, however, the team identity game has been positioned quite a bit differently. Whether this was a slick strategic maneuver or mere circumstance doesn’t really matter. The reality is, the cards have been dealt, and it is a pretty darn good hand. Now it is time to play.

And more....

Baseball Business said:
Nonsense. The partnership is actually quite nifty and truly unexpected at any level of ball. Whether anyone locally realizes it or not, the little team from quiet Terre Haute has just one-upped the entire baseball industry. The move by the owners to partner with Clabber Girl was a bold and unique one that is worthy of national attention.

First, it allows the Rex® brand to be uniquely marketed throughout the Prospect League’s broad footprint from Illinois to Pennsylvania. And now the iconic, all-American Rex® brand will be forever tied to the all-American hot dog, apple pie, and clean-cut collegiate boys of summer.

Secondly, the Rex name is inherently cool and marketable for a baseball team. It’s not like we are talking about the Terre Haute Pop Tarts or Liquid Plumrs here. The name also sports an “X” just like traditional baseball staples “Sox” and “Rox”. And the name is also interchangeable with “wrecks,” as in a future headline that reads: “New team ‘wrecks’ opponents on opening day.” So go ahead. Embrace it. See what the owners can do with the team’s new identity to make it fun, creative, and worthy of your undying loyalty.

Terre Haute Rex Unveil New Logo

The summer collegiate Prospect League’s new team in Terre Haute, IN, has just released its new logo. It was created by the design team from the Clabber Girl Corporation. Read more here. As we previously reported, the team was named after Clabber Girl’s Rex® Brand Coffee. Unfortunately, from our perspective, the logo misses the mark.

Might be a dumb name, but their logo (while not great) is more interesting.

For a break in the middle innings...

Following recent baseball tradition; the Rex should have a Coffee Cup race!

The Brewers do it with sausages, (Polish, Italian, Chorizo and...) the Nationals do it with Presidents (Geo Washington, Thos. Jefferson, Abe Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt) BTW -- Teddy has never won a race; he's lost over 400 races.

The Rex should have a Diner Mug, a Stainless Steel travel mug, a tea cup and a styrofoam cup. Have some REAL fun and bring in a Square Donut.

No interest in dinosaurs

While the logo is middle-of-the road; it'll be interesting to see their Cap Logo and other gear; the Rex logo IS one of the more professional looking logos in the Prospect League

Like everyone else has said the biggest thing they need to make sure is that they market the team and make the games fun and family friendly. If the atmosphere is like a amusement park with a little baseball throwen in it will leave fans with a fun filled feeling when they leave.

As far as the name goes I think they could have done a better job but who cares...we finaly have baseball in TH!

The "official" website looks very profesional and appears it will be far better than State's when done!

I have recently seen the logo on shirts worn by individuals on campus. I am a fan of the name, fan of the connection with Clabber Girl, etc. But the logo is just too simple for me. It certainly doesn't look good on a shirt. I get it, it is the Rex Coffee logo condensed...that isn't anything interesting. Lets be honest there is a reason that no one has ever heard of Rex Coffee outside of Terre Haute.

But from a different perspective, I can see this actually having some strong possibilities. If the Crown is used propertly in the logo. For example, I think they can easily have a Dinosaur type situation for the kids and that dinosaur wears that crown or something like that. I can see alot coming from it if done correctly. I wouldn't have gone that route but I am not in advertising either.

Just to clarify a statement by Eleven that the owner of the http://www.TerreHauteRex.com website "wanted to do their webpage"...

I never contacted the Rex club about building their website, nor did they contact me.

Go State - beat the crap out of Gene and his Shockers today!

I can live with the name, but the logo is terrible. It's simple (but not elegant) and stuffy... exactly what a family from Terre Haute doesn't want when heading out to the ole ball park. I know you folks don't care for the Dinos, but kids would have EATEN it up.

Rex = Latin for King.
Tyrannasaouras Rex = King of Tyrant Lizards (loosely)

The use of Rex in the coffee is obviously a omage to Rex in terms of King...that is why it has a crown in the logo. But I have to agree with Jason...the logo isn't interesting. It is very basic, but then that is often the intent. I am not in marketing but I would have liked to see something a little more "fun" than the simplistic. Let me put it this way, that logo isn't going to look good on a hat. Not like the "B" or the red sock on the Red Sox hats, or the "NY" on Yankees items, or the "C" or the Bear on Cubs stuff. Those are simple but interesting (though there is that whole traditional and years of using the same logo there).

Either way, I can live with all of it, because I think it is great that ISU (the foundation) has done this and brought this to TH. I just hope that the community supports it. I won't be making it out there much because I am not going to drive to TH (almost 2.5 hours) to see a game when I can go down to Victory Field and see a game for the same price, but I certainly will attend if I am in town, without question.

I look for it to be something along the lines of:

An R - in Boston Red Sox style...
With the purple crown sitting on top of the R... crooked, hanging off the left side...

Good grief!

Please leave any mention of the red sox out of any discussion of the Rex!

The Rex is a new franchise and we don't need to curse them or sully them with ANY reference to 'that boston franchise'
