I think they use those to promote athletics, usually the NCAA Pre Nationals followed by the NCAA Nationals followed by the Nike Cross Country Nationals.

That is what those things will more than likely be used for...

okay...just wondered if they would also be used to promote....

football...men's and women's basketball...baseball....softball...etc.......

It's possible - I mean it's not like Cross Country goes on year around - I just kno that they promote the heck out of the XC Pre Nats and Nats because it brings in so many people to Terre Haute. I know they often have billboards out for the basketball team... Can't recall seeing any for football though, that doesn't mean their haven't been any, I just haven't seen any. I have a since heightened since of awareness for things like that and I haven't noticed anything like that.

Cheaper or more expensive

for State to buy the ad on the billboard OR put up the billboard (one-time cost) and rotate the pro-State ads??

I don't know much about how billboard fees work, but if you own the billboard wouldn't you have to pay to lease the land the sign is on?

I am certain that ISU doesn't own any billboards. they rent/lease the space on contract. My experience is that it costs around 200 per month to rent the space and then it costs around 250-350 or more or to print the artwork. So as you change the signage you increase the cost. usually these companies that own the billboard will cut a deal for a 12 month or longer contract to lease the signage. So it might be $2000 one year or something like that. The cost comes in more for changing the artwork than for renting the billboard. So my guess is that ISU just doesn't change it much because of the cost of changing it everytime.

Of course the cost to rent is all about location. A billboard on I-70 costs more than a sign on US 40. A sign in TH costs less than a sign in Indy, a sign on US 41 costs more near campus than it does north, but a sign near the mall costs more than a sign near campus.

Sure -- the billboard company pays the landowner a monthly fee...

Say the landowner receives $250 a month from 'Turner Advertising' (yes -- that is/was Ted Turner's inherited company...) State pays Turner $300-$350 plus the 'artwork'...

So, wouldn't it be cheaper for State to pay the land-owner $250???

Who knows -- Maybe the billboard company also owns the only place to make the ads AND has the only workers skilled to install them...

'outsourcing' is always sold as 'cheaper' -- it's not always the case...

Good to see there are State billboards in/around The Haute vs. iu, purdue, isu-m, isu-e...
