Pretty crazy video. Funny how much things can change in 100 years huh?

I'll be going to the race this year for the 15th straight time. I used to camp out in the Coke Lot but I think I'm getting too old for that (25) and my body can no longer handle 2 full days of the track! LOL

I'll be in the Paddock but will move to the 3rd turn on the infield mid race. Should be a great time. Can't wait to hear Gomer Pile sing "On The Banks of the Wabash"

Isn't that "back home again in Indiana.....

Yes it is!

Maybe Gomer Pyle sings On the Banks of the Wabash...

but it's Jim Nabors who sings (usually) "Back Home Again in Indiana"

(At least it's been Nabors since 1972, excepting 1979-1982, 1985-86, 1997 and 2007.)

Hope he doesn't think orange juice is the traditional drink of the winner...

Call me uneducated but I have never enjoyed racing of any sorts (Horse, car, track) so really once the race starts I change the channel.

Not a question of being educated or uneducated...

Simply a question of enjoyment; the race, the traditions, the history, that outside of the U.S, the 500 is THE American Race!

Think Mario and Aldo dreamed of racing at Daytona??

Doubtful!! -- as F1 fans in Italy, they'd have been aware of the 500 (it was on the F1 schedule from 1950-1960)

Its back home again in Indiana...you jackass!:krazy:

Sorry KAP, but you're wrong.

Jim Nabors sings "Back Home Again in Indiana" on race day.

It's not the state song, but that's what he sings.

DAMN! you caught me. I was wrong. I looked up the 2 different songs and corrected my post by deleting it..

so since we are talking the "500"

Anyone else hate the way the IRL has essentially created a formula race out of the 500. It used to be that drivers and teams would innovate and build something amazing and bring it to Indy and run it, and each year it was exciting and the competition was intense with many, many drivers and teams not actually making it into the race (more trying than there are spots to race). Now, not so much and I think the 500 suffers because of it. Don't get me wrong I understand why this has happened (IRL vs. Penske vs. USAC, etc). But I miss the days of innovation and of exciting qualification runs and of the entire month of May being a HUGE deal. It just isn't the same anymore with everyone running a damn Honda and on the same chassis. AJ certainly doesn't like it the way it is....

Virtually every race series is a formula race.

It's just that some series/sanctioning bodies are more rigid or loose with their formula.

Having multiple chassis and engine manufacturers (future plan) will only help.

Sad that the IRL - CART battle had to occur.

Blame the old CART owners, the folks who DIDN'T want to admit that Indy WAS what made THEM.

Think of IRL/CCWS/CART WITH: Tony Stewart, Sam Hornish, Jr., Jeff Gordon, Juan Pablo, Jacque Villenuve and others...

As AJ, HE didn't make Indy... Indy made HIM. (just as it made Penske, Ganassi, Newman/Haas)

Yes these cookie cutter cars just doesn't do it for me. Back in the day with Andy Granitelli and his day glo red cars made Indy interesting. Bring back the turbines and let their imagination run wild!!! I got to see the turbines back when I was in 6th grade and there has been nothing like since then. I miss the mc larens-chapprals-lotus-offies-novis anything that is different than todays cars!!!!

Trust me, when the new cars come out next year (I am guessing it will be in TWO years) and with three major manufacturers building engines, this series will have a totally new look. The mock ups shown last week look awesome and the owners will be able to experiment with different set-ups with the different trim kits. They are heading in the right direction. Tickets for the 500 are UP almost 10%! It'll be my 40th!

I agree, AJ was made because of the 500...I was just pointing out that AJ has been vocal about not liking the qualifying situation. I am excited about the changes that are coming, I hope it brings things back to being innovative. With the soft walls and all the new safety features (they better do something about the fences for safety to keep tires and debris out of the stands), I am very hopeful that we once again will have competition and hear a recording of my friend Tom Carnagie saying, "its a new track record!"
