The All-MVC Level
My thoughts and hopes for the off week and the upcoming games (as a message to the team and coaches):

I hope the whole team (players and coaches) use the off-week to refocus on what it will take to win games, rather than focusing on minor transgressions or on individual goals.

To the O-Line: Keep working! Keep your pad levels down and keep your feet moving to sustain blocks. The film shows too much standing up (or being stood up), and no continued contact after the initial hit.

To the Receivers: Please oh please attempt to block downfield on a consistent basis, and to run routes with more effort.

To the RBs: Sometimes (or to date, many times) the hole is just not going to be there--do what you can with this rather than dancing behind the line. Deliver the blow sometimes.

To the QBs: Do you have checkoffs? Every team is blitzing at will and pressuring (as you well know). Do something about this at the line of scrimmage. Try not to take big losses, particularly in short yardage situations. Do not throw outs when you see CBs being agressive!

To the DL: We need more and consistent pressure on the QB and in the backfield. Sometimes there is great effort, sometimes not so, particularly late in the games. Keep your motors running for the entire game.

To the LBs: More tackles closer to the line of scrimmage? Focus on shedding blocks quickly and attacking. Keep your heads up when blitzing. Forced fumbles anyone?

To the DBs: This team needs takeaways badly! You cannot have the LBs with more Int's and PBUs than you as a group! Sell out on the runs and attack the football. Do any of you ever blitz? If you do, find the football and cause turnovers. I've seen maybe 1 or 2 big hits the entire season--let's see about 10-12 in the remaining games.

To All: Please no stupid personal fouls or other ridiculous penalties! Check your egos in the locker room and band together. There are winable games remaining on the schedule. Play each and every play with the maximum effort that you are capable of. Look in the mirror first if you think there are problems.

To the Coaches: Please stay consistent with your messages to the players. From the stands, I don't see anybody on the team that has quit or is not giving effort. Sure, the effort could be more consistent and delivered sometimes at a higher intensity level, but that is your job--the negatives and personal call outs don't produce effort, they produce self-degradation. Keep teaching on the sidelines. These are the young men that you have brought to the program to turn things around. Don't give up on them!

OK, that is my long-winded message to the team for the off-week. Hopefully they will all do some soul-searching and realize that the guys in the different color uniforms are not that much different than them, and that they are capable of winning. Anyone else?

Amen brother!!!!!

I especially like the part about checking your egos at the door....a few fans and posters could stand to take that advice as well....lol....

This post reminded me that in the darkest of days this program has a pretty good (and involved) fan base. I look forward to the day we can celebrate some wins.

This is the most important thing you said........ Sometimes I wonder if this is our biggest problem........

Funny though. What kind of ego can you have when you're a player for or fan of a team with the longest losing streak in college football? Good points above, New Sycamore.

Bent, It's the kind of ego that can make bad things much, much worse. The "I'm doing my part, but you guys suck" kind of ego, or the "I don't even belong at this craphole, I should have been in the Big Ten" kind of ego. Like I said, every single player on this team needs to look in the mirror, and see what more they can do to help end the streak AS PART OF THE TEAM, NOT FOR THEMSELVES. Trust me, even with the losing streak, there are all kinds of egos floating around the locker room.

I thought those were the players we supposedly got rid of when Miles took over.

We got rid of the punks......... the ones that liked to go to jail........ the ones that like to get in fights..........

Egos are always present in football, it's the nature of the game......... Controlling your ego is key...... Some players do at times and don't at other times............ When a team loses as much as we do, some players start playing for themselves and feeling sorry for themselves..........

I do agree that some of the players now are playing for themselfs and I understand that....Its not good but I know what they are feeling, but from what I heard what some of the players did on friday before the game and before the game on saturday makes me wonder if the seniors have givin up....I mean is there a leader on the team? Someone who spirits never get down and is fired up and will fight till the clock hits 00? I think there are some young players who need to step up and let there voices be heard. You got to have that want to win and work hard attitude, you got to have it all the time and once all the players understand it they will be alot better team

Good points, Showtime. Pissin' around the night before a game is a bad deal. It's been a problem now and then at UNI, too.

A suspension or two might send a message, but, with a young team, it may be risky for Coach.

One thing I did notice at the UNI game last year is that many of your linemen are rather small. Gotta get some big guys, then develop them. I was stunned at some fo the skinny arms on the OL.

Well said....I think we also discount the mommies and daddies that are telling their kids that they shouldn't be here either or that they should be playing more or that they're the best player on the team. Trust me, parents can cause a LOT of problems in this regard. Try sitting by some of them during games, etc., and listen. It's unbelievable and not just in football either! Shut up...quit coaching from the stands and support team, parents!

Very much agreed!!! people in the stands needs to stop yellin down at the players and coaches about the plays they make or call.. support the team thats what they need the most. And to the parents that think there son isnt playing enough, well the only thing is for them to step up, make a name for themselfs in practice and hit people. Scout guys need to work harder to make the starters work hard and fight for there jobs....This isnt High School football!!! your not here for fun, its college football its a business and your job is to work hard and Win!

I'm very curious what the Friday and Saturday incidents were. To have practice at 6:00 is really no skin off of the coaches asses, but it certainly is for the student athletes who have tests or a heavy class load on midweek days. That type of discipline will do one thing, and one thing only: get players to start tuning out. If there were serious transgressions, that is one thing, but I believe the "crimes" had nothing to do with game performance. I think the coaches and players need to get refocused on the objective. And yes, this team does need mature leadership--not the rah, rah BS or the in-your-face do it my way--but the leadership by example and encouragement.

I know players who did sprints saturday before the game...for reasons but friday im still not 100% on what happend but it wasnt smart by team players

I agree with the stop yelling at the play calling and the coaches and the parents being coaches, what I don't agree with is the fact that this team is 0 - everthing what to you think these kids are thinking? they should be thinking that they should get there own shot, I sure when these kids were recruited they were told that they would have a shot to play early , I sure there are kids that aren't playing at all and kids that are playing limited time that could do better than what some of the starters are doing. These kids are supposed to feel like than can help the team and should be given the opportunity, if they don't have that type of attitude than they don't need to be there.

I don't post alot but I read everyday, just my opinion

I suppose you are a big proponent of time out instead of paddling as well? There is nothing wrong with a little old school discipline from the coaches....something greatly lacking in today's society in general.

That's an assinine comment. After your kid gets his ass beaten, you beat him up on top of it? Brilliant! My point is the coaches messages are starting to be inconsistent. No amount of coaching discipline is EVER going to get this current team to beat teams like UNI. If you knew more about the why's of this story and the disciplining then maybe you'd make a smidgen of sense--without that your just spouting your old school BS. And yes, I do believe in most cases there are better forms of discipline than "paddling". How about playing time? Maybe you need to be paddled??

I agree with one thing: there is no greater motivator than pine time....I'm not much into making one feel great about themselves when they have screwed up so the rest of your blood pressure rising post I'm going to take with a grain of salt......you are a parent of one of the players correct.....I think I have read somewhere else on these forums where the parents should let the coaches coach....coaches have to make tough and unpopular decisions sometimes....and sometimes it is best just to support those decisions through thick and thin....I sense some anti-coaching staff vibes from your tone?

Enough innuendo...

Does ANYONE know what happened on Friday night / Saturday morning??
