The article about moving "up instead of down" is a disingenuous claim at best.

If you have football at the D2 level, of course you should move to FCS. D2 has over 60% of the scholarship requirements of FCS and an even smaller niche market than FCS does. The rest of the moves in that article were lateral within FCS minus Liberty, that PRINTS money thanks to their foray into the online college landscape before anyone else did. Pioneer teams were already giving our academic rides and were looked down upon for FCS playoff bids -- no sense in staying in that league.

So really, the only two that mattered were Liberty and Idaho, one move up and one move down.

As for your second article, your summary does not fit and is a slanted narrative. Bottom line is college football is a money pit for every school outside of those getting paid. It's not arguable and fuzzy math on whether a program matters to a school is debatable on a case-by-case basis.

Agree -- Liberty has truly socked away the $$; Falwell, Jr is envisioning them as a Baptist equivalent of BYU. And as the comment section mentioned; Presbyterian is moving from the (scholie) Big South to the non-scholie Pioneer.

Have to congratulate Idaho on making a very wi$e decision; N. Mexico State should take a hard look at the same move.

What's deceiving is that not all the FBS additions have been long-running FCS teams that finally moved up. Several are new football programs.

Examples:
Team - First football season - Move to FBS
Old Dominion - 2009 - 2014
Charlotte - 2013 - 2015
South Alabama - 2009 - 2012
Coastal Carolina - 2003 - 2017
Georgia State - 2010 - 2013
UTSA - 2011 - 2012
FIU - 2002 - 2006
Florida Atlantic - 2001 - 2006

No, it's just administrative idiots writing checks and spending the money of future generation of students.

We're on the cusp of a massive and I do mean M-A-S-S-I-V-E student loan bubble that will make the sub prime mortgage look like a couple dudes scratching nickels together. If there isn't a feasible solution to that and Uncle Sam decides to not be so generous in giving up free college money, you're going to see administrations having a frank discussion about college athletics as a whole, not just football.

Outside of FBS, most schools are propped up by student fees and direct institutional funding that is overwhelmingly paid for by students. Instead of spending that on their actual academics, sports are being subsidized. That's not debatable no matter how many idiots add football, basketball or any additional athletics programs. If I were a President and my AD wanted to add a sport, the answer would be HELL NO unless you can bring to me at least a decade worth of funding in advance. I love sports, but I'm not burying my head in the sand like you're choosing to do.

Back to that student loan bubble, if it goes. It won't just be athletics programs going. We're going to see entire colleges closing. It's going to be a really ugly fallout and that is why, any President or AD worth their salary, should be leaning out their offerings to match revenues and donations before temporary funds like student fees.
