There has been a lot of talking of the NFL giving fines and suspensions for helmet to helmet or vicious hits. From what i've heard from the players themselves it seems like they disagree with the rule and that football is football and you should be allowed to hit a player like that and what not. i personally agree with the players. i feel like if they implement a rule of that nature. the NFL will face a lot of criticism. Also, yes. a defenseless receiver is vulnerable to get leveled out. but if the quarterback would of gave a better throw he would not of became defenseless. just my thoughts.

The helmet to helmet hits should be punished but if it is just a good solid hit that doesn't lead with the helmet into another helmet then I think they should let that go. Intentional helmet to helmet hits like Brandon Merriwether of the Pats this last Sunday is not what football is about. Concussions are a serious matter. Best way to do this is to fine players for intentional helmet to helmet hits. Rodney Harrison said on SNF PreGame that he put $50,000 away before each season to pay for fines on big hit but he also said that he would have let up a bit if he would have been suspended for those hits.

the only problem i have is, no one is aiming for a helmet to helmet collision. there are a few hits that seemed like maybe they were, but who would aim for a collision that might knock u out as well.

also in regards to the desean jackson hit, he was not defenseless. he had control of the ball and was running. dunte robinson made a great play. maybe they should fine wide recievers for putting their head down to absorb a tackle.

what about crack backs on offense and special teams? players who get cracked are defenseless, so will there be punishment as well?

If the 'professionals' knew how to tackle, this wouldn't be much of an issue.

99% of the hits under question weren't tackles.

with that thinking why wear pads, you dont need them to do a text book tackle. why has there never been a rule to protect the defense...cause offense puts fans in the seats. dumb and i hope the players union shows its sack and fights this.

aren't all chopblocks now illegal?

due to the nature of def and off; the off players tend to take the brunt of tackles; the rb or wr get hit play after play -- it isn't the same def player every play (ie joe addai may get tackled on every play of a colts drive, brian urlacher doesn't make every tackle during a bears def stand)

players haven't learned how to tackle in years; i've seen it at every level.

it was (literally) beat into me in jr high football; NEVER drop your head. You;ll lose sight of the rb AND you'll break your neck.

outside the tackle box they are illegal, and a defensive player engaged with offensive player cannot be chop blocked by another offensive player. but inside the tackle box free game

listen to the players...they are against this, and now players like harrison have a reputation for being dirty when they are not. its hard not to head someone in the head helmet to helmet when the offensive player gets low to take a hit when the defensive player is already in his motion to make the play.

nfl now should not market their big hit videos or blame 3rd parties for actions of their own website marketing those hits that are being fined. they took the pictures down because the league is hypocritical. they are not worried about the players they are worried about losing money. no points being scored makes the game boring to the casual fan, which will make the casual fan not spend money on the league.

Thanks for the background.

The players are against it because they're being fined. If they all knew how to TACKLE or would TACKLE; there'd be a lot less arguing.

Agree -- people want to see the stars play; not b/u, 3rd, 4th stringers or folks who shouldn't be in the league.

The league needs to expand the rosters; which the players will be FOR as long as they get the same amount of $$$ -- I have no favorites in 'labor disputes' in the NFL, NBA, MLB or NHL.

Have you not heard the Offensive players that have said they are against because now players will go for the legs?? Try wrapping up running backs on your own sometime...I don't care if your ray lewis sometimes you gotta bring the pop...

As soon as I see def players tackling people, I'll reassess my position.

the basic fundamentals of football have gone the same was as basketball

its the evolution of the games it self. i think NBA is the best brand of basketball to watch and NFL is best to brand of football to watch. I sometimes can't watch college sports unless i have an emotional tie to the game because of how sloppy it is compared to the pro ranks.

bad example but in the 70's bobby orr changed the game of hockey. before him it was just who can out bruise and beat who up. he single handly changed the game by being a defenseman that had finesse and speed.

nfl game is changing cause teams rather throw a 3 yd pass than hand it off. the game can not be won with 3 yds and a cloud of dust. thats why there are more guys takin these open field hits.

I'm typing this slow; your comparison of the college game as sloppy, compared to the pros has me ROTFLMAO. The NBA is not basketball; it's 1v1 play, TONS of isolation. I hate the attitude that the game is too slow for the pros, if they'd learn to dribble w/out carrying the ball, or palming the ball...
Can't remember the last time I watched a regular season NBA game; I think I did check the scores of the finals

really? hockey? take the fighting out of the nfl, watch the crowds wither.

I still prefer the college game over the nfl; wondering when pop warner coaches will begin to teach kids to tackle; figure it'll have to start at that level, the pros have little interest in it

agree to disagree...

as regards to the nhl, fights are few and far between any more. goons can no longer have the skills of a clown and play. they have to have abilty to play. back in the 60-70s nhl was a goon league now it is not.

with the nba it is hard to pass the ball a million times b4 a 24 sec shot clock runs out. players are why to good to sit there and keep passing the ball. the game is not sloppy. teams find a weakness and exploit it, so if the weakness is kobe embarrassing grant hill in the 4th qtr of a conference game then so be it.

agree to disagree...

There is still plenty of fighting in the NFL; look at the recent example of a player going after a fan.

I don't see myself paying for an NBA game anytime in the recent future; WRT the shot clock, funny that someone thinks it causes the game to speed up...

I enjoyed college MBB w/out the shot clock (though UNC 4-corners was a bit ridiculous)

There is a difference between tackling someone and running into them as hard as you can to try to nock them over...all to often in the NFL that is what happens. One may call it a tackle no matter what...I don't see it that way.

And the NBA is a joke. There is no real basketball occuring whatsoever. It isn't basketball when 40% of the points are scored on dunks. That isn't basketball, that is the first bucket on the Grand Prize Game from the Bozo Show. Too talented...what? They are all talented or they wouldn't be there. There is no defense to speak of for the entire regular season and then in the playoffs, they play a little. NBA isn't basketball!!! For me it isn't even entertaining. If you like it great, but as far as I am concerned it is pathetic.

NHL changed because it had too. The talented players were getting hurt, thats why wherever Gretsky went, he had his body guards on the ice. They had to change the game. Also, with Universal Healthcare in Canada, they won't cover certain injuries...so they had to "finese" things in hockey to help with dental costs??!! lol
