That was an ugly game and really saw some disturbing things. I said early this week that this team rarely gets outworked, but today that got outworked from the tip. That's the reason they were in the position they were in at the end. Don't get me wrong Morehead is a good team, but we should have beat them. They really got after us on D and forced us into rushed and difficult shots all day. They also pressed us the entire game and it really caused our guards some trouble. In all reality this game really didn't mean much to the Sycamores win or lose - but I don't think they will walk away from this one feeling very good about much of anything. Well here we go.

Odum: He battled today and it got the best of him, he got beat up early in the game and seems to have a pretty good injury to his left leg (appears to be a calf injury) and that could be trouble for the Sycamores. He really never got comfortable in this game and turned the ball over a season high 5 times. He also seems to focus more on free throws on the road and at home for whatever reason he doesn't shoot them as well. He looked an awful lot like a freshman today. He was certainly not the same player with what looks like a significant injury.

Lathan: Thought he played a heck of a ball game today - shot the ball a bunch. I haven't seen the box score but he was chuckin it today. He had a couple big dunks on great passes from Odum. He should have had another one in the second half but he didn't jump/see it coming for whatever reason. He had 3 or 4 steals and he's put together back to back good games for the Sycamores.

JP: He is really shooting the ball well right now for the Sycamores. He was really the main reason we stayed in that ball game - he knocked down some big shots for us. Need him to keep stokin it, wish he would be a little more selfish sometimes but he's doing a much better job.

Steve: Haven't seen the box score and I couldn't really tell you what Steve did today if anything? He has not been knocking down the shots that he was early this season, really need him to get to shooting the ball better for the Sycamores. He always gives you good D and he's a solid passer.

Richard: He and Odum combined for 10 total turnovers and that is not what you expect out of your 2 leaders. He really worked his butt of on the defensive end and he had his handful - I believe that it hurt him on the offensive end because he missed some wide open looks. His shots are just not falling right now.

Walker: Thought he played a very physical game and this was the kind of matchup that he had been waiting for. The refs let them go at it pretty hard inside and for the most part I feel like he did a decent job. That's without the benefit of seeing how bad we got out rebounded? I feel like it was pretty ugly? lol

AC: Shot the ball a little better today but still missed some that he usually hits. You would have thought he would have had a bigger day seeing as how all they play is a match-up zone, but he really has been more selective with his shots. Might have something to do with that mini slump he's been in.

RJ: He had a 3 toward the end of the game that could have put us within 2 and missed it short. Really needed him to knock that shot down. He didn't play major minutes for the Sycamores today as it was a very physical basketball game.

As I mentioned above it was a very physical game, credit Morehead State for getting in our shorts and locking us up. Lansing was really upset toward the end when it looked as if the Sycamores were going to get within 2, Odum might have got fouled as he threw his body and arms into the air. I will be honest, from my angel I thought Odum tried to flop a little bit and get the call. As it worked out he didn't get the call and Lansing was pissed. The officiating wasn't great I will agree with that, but that's the way it goes sometimes I guess. Big game coming up in a few short days at Northern Iowa, need to put this game behind us really quickly. Until next time...

NOTE: Just looked at the box score and it looks as if the Sycamores actually won the rebounding battle - amazing if you look at the box score you would think the Sycamores would have won this game. We both turned the ball over a bunch, we were -2 in that category, +5 in rebounding (split on offensive rebounds), +2 assists and we out shot them from the field and the line... Shocking - maybe the officiating did cost us the game? Thoughts?

I pretty much agree. Although I thought we missed a TON of wide open shots. Believe it or not, we outrebounded them.

Had a good angle. Odum got molested!

Top 3 reasons we lost the game
- Shaky ballhandling (Odum, Richard and Mcwhorter imparticular)
- Effort (Their players seems to be 2 steps quicker than ours and much more into the game)
- Odum's injury (Could it be shin splints again or a calf? Idk im not a doctor but I do know that it was obv. early on that he was hurting so why keep him out there? This game while it would of been nice to win is meaningless in the grand scheme of things. If Odum cannot shake whatever injury he has we will be trouble for the rest of the season

Positives.
eh well hard to take anything good away from this but Lathan played much better (although still some wtf plays). Printy and Carter did enough for us to win as well. Maybe the best thing was how Walker battled down low. Thought he did about as well as we could of hoped on 35. Thats all I got.

Oh anyone still think JK couldnt help this team??...

My thoughts were
1. It was good to see DL Back to playing decent basketball. ( Gotta get that 4th dunk would have )been huge
2. Moorehead State was very aggressive defensively
3. Faried is by far the best post player we have went up against in several years. This guy was strong, and very quick off his feet which is why he is such a good post player and rebounder. I thought Myles did a very good job against him and when we helped down low we stopped him . But when we failed to help he was trouble.
4.Student section was non exsistant maybe 40-50 total .
This game meant nothing to the type of season we are having but I think we can take many things and in fact think we will benefit from playing this team they are far more aggressive than any team in the Valley .

Not ready this time

Just plain got beat to the spot all thru the game, from the tip to the buzzer. Our best ball handlers were picked again and again, sometimes with fouls not called, but neverthe less picked. We did not adapt to the press in any way.
They were a better team today than the Syc's. But - know what "I still LOVE our team" . they tried !!

Did anyone else focus on Morehead's stud when it came to rebounding? The man is a beast, However check out TV 10's coverage of the game on their sports coverage and how he " got position" on Isaiah to get a rebound. Most would call it a throw down.
Again, the kid can play, but he sure knew how to "work his way"to a rebound.

Teams from the once mighty Missouri Valley Conference made sure that the league will get only one NCAA tournament bid this year. Wichita State laid an egg at home vs. Virginia Commonwealth last night, we got beat by a team that lost to Eastern Illinois of the "lowly" Ohio Valley Conference and Missouri State got spanked/whipped and molested by Valparaiso of the once mediocre Horizon Conference by 14 or 15 points. It wasn't even close. George Mason and Northern Iowa are in a donneybrook as we speak. At least Bradley won.

MVC seems to be heavy on young talent. I expect a resurgence in the next few years.

Bradley and SIU, (and add Drake) the flagships of the MVC!!

Well, I thought we did some good things today. We competed with a team as good or better than anyone in the MVC. Let's face it, the MVC is not very stong. We're a one bid league.

I thought this MSU squad was really good. Their defensive package was fantastic. They threw a little bit of everything at us and we were guessing all afternoon. Combine the switching defenses with a killer press, and we struggled...but we did compete. We were one stop away all day. We just didn't get that stop a cruch time.

The good news is that all we really ought to care about is getting a decent seed in St Louis. We're on track. One win in STL should mean a NIT bid at minimum. That is progress. And you never know...we could get that one bid for the MVC. Being hot a the right time will be enough.

After looking at stats it's apparent free throws really hurt ISU, and I don't know how many front ends of 1 & 1's ISU missed, but I know there were a few. Had ISU shot better from the FT line I think they'd have won today.

I was hoping they'd win, then carry that momentum to UNI and into the last home game vs. SIU, then on to St. Louis.

Hopefully they can win the last 2 games that are more important and then win 3 in St. Louis.

I wonder when ISU returns this game to Morehead? In the 2011-2012 season or 2012-2013. They can do either. Remember UWGB has to come back to ISU in 2011-2012 since they didn't come this season. We have 2 yrs. to return the game to MSU

Odum, Richard, and McWhorter had off days. We got beat on the defensive boards in key situations and Morehead scored on 2nd and 3rd type offensive rebounds in key situations. We got "picked clean" several times bringing it up court on the press and when not being pressed. Morehead had a deeper team today and their guards out quicked our guards too many times. Odum keyed Lathan with several alleyoops but threw one in a key situation that was too high, Lathan was not ready, and the pass was too far too the outside for Lathan to get--is was a key point in the game. Finally the dark headed ref with the most hair sucked.

If the officials had called a closer game, it would have been a totally different kind of game. They were mugging us all day long. We did miss several wide open looks and some free throws, but the officiating in this game made MVC refs look good...go figure........

Disagree. It was physical on both ends. The officiating is not even close to a reason we lost.

I like your optimism but one win in St. Louis won't earn a ticket to the NIT anymore. The NCAA took over the NIT a couple of years ago and now the only automatics are regular season conference winner teams from conferences (like the Valley) that only get the conference tourney winner in the dance. The rest are usually 8th place Big 10, 15th place Big East, 6th place SEC, if you get the drift? Hell IU would have a better crack at it if they could "miraclely.......is that a word" win a couple of games in the Big 10 tourney.

Lathan brings the entertainment value for the Sycamores, both good and bad, if he learned how to play and not solely rely on talent that would make a world of difference, btw Lathan had a bunch of turnovers in this game. dude needs to learn when to just run the offense and not be a hero every damn possession.

also, hope Odum isn't hurt that bad he is the most important player on the team.
