Well, you all got your wish. Todd Golden is leaving the Tribune-Star. I wonder if they will replace him? Or will we get Andy Amey? Hahaha! 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣

I certainly didn't agree with everything he wrote, but I enjoyed his work . I'll definitely miss his "Down In the Valley" columns. He'll be missed.

CNHI owns the Trib-Star (and other papers such as Kokomo and Anderson). So maybe covering Indiana sports will still include the Sycamores.

On the down side for him he will probably have to move there. It was a nice town back in the day. I have no use for it anymore.

Or this meant they were reassigning Todd and didn't want to say they were getting rid of the Indiana State beat writer.

Have they announced a replacement?

We've already lost one-quarter of the country's local newspapers and it's expected to reach one-third by 2025. It's a dying industry with nothing reputable to fill the void. I doubt the Tribstar itself lasts another decade, never mind if there is an ISU beat writer. Hate journalism all you like but without it we can count on social media to fill the void with unsubstantiated rumors becoming accepted fact.

And credit to Todd for sticking with it. Most of what you see now with newspapers is kids fresh out of college with little to no experience moving into positions they're not prepared for because they're cheap. Newspaper companies care only about profit, not quality. They're stipping the papers down to the bone while milking the local paper's reputation and community significance for as long as they can. The veteran journalists stick with it out of a passion for the job and because they often can't see themselves doing anything else. I didn't often agree with Todd's takes on things and found it irritating how often his articles contained typos and other things that should have been caught with proper editing, but I respect his dedication to the job and the Terre Haute community.

AI reporting is coming, too. It will be able to analyze box scores and other analytics and then write summaries off of that.

What will be lost are those features that provide the color and warmth.

Gee, that sounds great. Can’t wait for humans to be removed from everything. That’ll just be awesome. 😒

I'm not sure that this is that big of a deal. I did some math and my estimate is that only about 25% of the local population actually reads the paper. Then you have to ask yourself how many of those people actually care about ISU, and that number is likely pretty low.

FWIW if the Tribune Star covers high school sports then they will still cover ISU too. I wouldn't lose too much sleep over this. I'm sure a lot of you folks liked his articles, but the paper isn't going to boycott ISU.

The TribStar should not have any problem coming up with a new "beat writer". There are quite a few who have become unemployed in the last year or so. It was probably time for Golden to move on. He was still bitter about the dismissal of GL against his wishes and he never really warmed up to the new basketball staff; likely a wait & see distrust from all parties?

Don't forget the loss of context, knowledge and sensibility
