I have a granddaughter running track at Carmel. If a relay team qualifies for state, do the same girls have to run in the finals? I know they used a different girl in the finals last year. I assume she was an alternate? Or does the "school" qualify and they can run anybody they want?
Coach is scrambling several girls in the relays in the HSR qualifiers. Is he possibly trying to qualify 2 teams?

Actually - I will be with two friends here in about 10 mins that are high school coaches that will know the exact answer to this question and I will find out for you.

Even though I ran track at State I’m not really a track “nerd” if you will… For example I ran 400 hurdles for 4 years and to this day I’m not exactly sure how many hurdles are on the track for that race. 😂😂 Somewhat embarrassing - but I just raced. That’s all.

If you’re talking indoor state and the hsr qualifiers which isn’t really an IHSAA sanctioned championship - they’re probably trying to get as many girls in the finals as possible to get experience and see what they can do.

Generally speaking I believe the answer is no - you don’t have to run the same 4 runners in the relay but you have to run one of the alternates. You can’t just pick a random runner or 4 different runners if you will that were not listed as an alternate going into the qualifying round of the tournament.

And good luck to your granddaughter. That’s a power house program to be running for with great leadership and participation!

For NSR - only ONE relay team per school. You can run multiple teams to qualify but the fastest team goes. You can have up to 4 alternates listed for the fastest team.

For Outdoor - at the start of the tournament season you list 8 athletes for the relay. Hypothetically any of the 8 can run at any point in time.
