This happened not more than 1 mile from my childhood home. I haven't seen this man in years, but have known him since I was a boy - 50+ years ago. He is an interesting fellow. Extremely bright, he and his deceased wife had a long-time passion for travel. They used to do slide shows for their fellow church members when they returned from their trips to exotic places.
I have no opinion about the propriety of the various items that he has collected. I would say that having shrunken heads, skeletons and skulls in one's possession seems odd at best. If I personalize my view of this, I would not be pleased to know that someone possesses the skeletal remains of one of my loved ones. Further, having those remains on display would displease me even more. On the other hand, his collection includes many artifacts of an entirely different nature (primitive tools, arrowheads, pottery, etc). Preserving those and potentially passing them on for future generations seems to be a valuable contribution to others.
There is speculation among Dr. Miller's neighbors that he informed the FBI of his artifact collection after he had become embroiled in a personal dispute with someone who had reportedly threatened to inform the authorities of his possessions. If this is so, he appears to have acted proactively in order to defuse an otherwise volatile and, no doubt, painful situation.
Obviously this is a sensational story and, as is true with headline-grabbing stories, the information shared with the public is likely to be incomplete and perhaps inaccurate. I do hope that it eventually concludes in a manner that allows this gentleman a measure of peace.
