If you take a look at the schedule as it sits on GoSycamores.com right now, the only 2 games listed are our season opening with Indiana followed with a game against Purdue.

Aug 31 - @ Indiana
Sep 07 - @ Purdue
Oct 05 - vs. ? (Homecoming)
Oct 26 - vs. North Dakota State

By flipping the locations on the games we had this year, we're looking at guaranteed home games next year against:

vs. Southern Illinois
vs. Western Illinois
vs. Youngstown State

Lastly, Homecoming has been announced for the weekend of October 5, so one of our home games will be played on that date. Wonder if we get Western Illinois again for Homecoming as they were here in 2009 and 2011. Likewise, by flipping our home games, our guaranteed away games would be against:

@ Missouri State
@ Illinois State

Then, per the South Dakota MVFC entry requirements, I thought we will only take one trip to Dakotas each year. Based on having an away game at North Dakota State, a home game against South Dakota and South Dakota State, not sure how that works out? We're dark against Northern Iowa for another year.

vs. North Dakota State
@ South Dakota
@ South Dakota State

That leaves one game that we need to fill, a home game especially after opening up with 2 money games. I think if we end up missing out on the playoffs because of our Quincy game, we're unlikely to see another D2/D3 school on the schedule. It's also been said in other threads that Eastern Illinois, while a great fit, is unlikely to happen for whatever reasons. I would like to see one of the games against Butler or Valpo, someone in state that could possibly help attendance figures or an Ohio Valley team, one that we could possibly return the next year. There are several good programs in that conference including Eastern Kentucky, Tennessee-Martin, Tennessee State and, what would be optimal if they could find a way to work it out, Eastern Illinois.

What does everyone else think?

the home game vs. NDSU is on Oct. 26th, as posted on the NDSU site, so you can add that to the official date list.

Hmm, interesting. So they're here in 2013. Guess that means we go dark against South Dakota in 2013. We last played Northern Iowa at their place so we'd be giving them 2 trips in a row without a return if that is the case. Surely we wouldn't be dark against Northern Iowa for 2 years in a row, right?

If we have IU, Purdue, NDSU and UNI in one season... that is a very difficult schedule.

Major brain fart. I left out South Dakota State. So we'd have a return game against them in 2013 as well if we followed suit. Am I misremembering something or did Prettyman not state we'd only have on trip to the Dakotas in a given year?

Don't forget the University of Dayton. Close proximity to TH and in the same conference of Valpo and Butler. (1-AAA or D-1 no scholarships).

Okay, I knew I wasn't crazy:

http://tribstar.com/sports/x104127245/BREAKING-South-Dakota-to-join-MVFC

According to Prettyman, ISU agreed to vote for USD membership in the conference on the condition that ISU will only make one trip to any of the three Dakota schools per year. This provision will also be in place for Southern Illinois, which expressed similar concerns.

So if that is the case and we are dark against Northern Iowa again in 2013 per the link above, what happens since we had both South Dakota and South Dakota State at home this year? Also, I thought Iowa was included but apparently it is only the Dakotas so I updated that above. Any ideas here?

obviously we only play at USD or sdsu next season, who knows which one it is? Neither site has their 2013 schedule posted.

Right, but does that mean the other has to double up here? See what I'm getting at? I doubt either would be happy about that.

yep, I see what you're getting at, but you do know we are not the only school who only agreed to let USD in if we didn't have to make two trips up north every year. SIU also agreed under the same stipulation. But, having said that, SIU doesn't play USD for 2 years, so that answers the question about SIU having to make two trips to the dakota territories for this year and next.

I am sure this was all worked out in advance of allowing USD into the conference, either usd or sdsu is gonna have to play at ISU 2 straight years.

How would you like to be YSU though, they have to FLY to EVERY away game except their game at ISU, which is obviously only every other year, imagine their travel budget for football

I'm going to go out on a limb and take a guess that we have revised our 1-trip to the Dakota's each year to no more than 2 trips to the Dakotas/Iowa each year. Since we don't play UNI in 2013, that's what makes sense to me. Nobody is going to agree to traveling to an opponent twice in a row I don't think. Could be completely wrong though.

YSU traveled to NDSU 2 years in a row (2011, 2012).

So we could end up seeing something like this:

Aug 31 - @ Indiana
Sep 07 - @ Purdue
Sep 14 - BYE
Sep 21 - vs. Non-Conference Game (Family Day)
Sep 28 - @ South Dakota State
Oct 05 - vs. Western Illinois (Homecoming)
Oct 12 - vs. Youngstown State
Oct 19 - @ Illinois State
Oct 26 - vs. North Dakota State
Nov 02 - @ Missouri State
Nov 09 - vs. Southern Illinois
Nov 16 - vs. South Dakota

That's a pretty stout schedule, especially if we get a good FCS non-conference game scheduled.

I think doubling up is a given and not all that unprecedented in other conferences with an odd number of teams.

Another thought in regards to what 317 posted about a bye. Ideally, that would be great, but I think we have very little room to maneuver. We are at the mercy of MVC scheduling and our FBS overlords. This year for example, we had no choice if we wanted to get 11 games in. We haven't had a weekend off since Labor Day.

Isn't next year a year that 1-AA teams can play 12 games because of the calendar? This happens every few years I believe. In 02 & 03 we played 12 and I think 13 & 14 are that way too
