Played against him once in high school. Thought I was pretty good back then but he guarded me and I couldn't get a shot off as his arms were too long and he was too quick. Our team was about 5-0 at the time I think and Ted Sweatt & the Wiley Red Streaks gave us a dose of reality that we were not better than them.

I knew his younger brother Doug, he was a hell of a guard. Gary was youngest brother, he was a late bloomer but was also a very good player. Bank, I think we have had this conversation before, but Wiley played Mitchell in the championship game of the Honey Creek Holiday tournament, and that game featured Paul Stroud vs Gary Sweatt. Stroud dropped in about 50 points and Sweatt scored about 30 for Wiley.

Doug's biggest problem was that the Wiley coach was Howard Mathis, and he was probably one of the worst H.S. coaches I have ever come across.

I was living in Newburg back in '64-'65 (?), the year Sweatt, Newsome, Hollenbeck, Copper, et al. I recall a column in the E-ville Courier highlighting the EC-ISU game, saying "not to miss" that frosh game, because they were better than ISU's varsity. They characterized Ted as a IHSAA high jump phenom that would "shoot from the rafters." The newspaper was correct, as the Aces blew apart the Trees 1-man (Wade) squad, while the ISU Frosh won by a blowout margin over EC's pups.

I recall Mathis @ Wiley...never could match wits w/ Sharpie (Gerstmeyer) or Kerht (Garfield). Did Sharpe ever "steal" any of Mathis' players?:) Wiley did have some athletes, though. I knew Kenny Piepenbrink (frosh hoop walkon/ISU FB)...we also had the 6'8" dude that transferred back to TH from Pepperdine, TED KRALY. Kraly had some type of arm deformity that limited his collegiate PT.

The player with the deformed arm was Tommy Brewer, he graduated in 1968. Had monster talents, but would never be able to play at the next level. The other player you were referring to, Ted Kraley, graduated in 1970. (Kraley had the disallowed tip-in that resulted in Brazil upsetting the Redstreaks in the 1969 Regional.) He did come back to play for ISU and still lives in T.H. Was on the school board at one time, I believe.

Sharpie didn't steal too many Wiley players, but he poached Garfield players with regularity.

Shared a first aid class with Ted--in fact he sat next to me. IIRC Roger Council taught the class. After the 3rd class I never saw him again. He seemed like a good guy, but wasted a terrific opportunity.

I had that same class about the same time w/ Ray Baggett...6'6" Larry Deakins (THN/Transfer) was in my class. What was the nature of his injury? Don't recall him ever getting any ISU PT after arriving. I've lost count how many "cripples" ISU basketball has had over the decades, pre & post Tartan.
