Liked what I saw. Some good hitting going on over there. Little Sewell is a hitter just like his big brother. Was called for the same leading with the head type of hit that Alex was penalized for a few times last season. He laid a hellacious lick on wide receiver Chris O'Leary, who is looking pretty good. He's making a very nice transition from quarterback to wide receiver. He caught a couple of passes in a crowd and got smacked. But he held on to the ball and got right up and went back to the huddle.

Tanner Riley is looking good as well. Redshirt freshman WR DeSean Prentice was impressive on a couple of plays. He caught one pass, shook off a couple of defenders, and then gained about 10 more yards.

Redshirt freshman RB Richie Dyer has some nice moves. Like what I saw of him.

The scrimmage followed some positional and segement drill work and only lasted about a half hour before the rains hit. They went inside when there was lightning. I'm not sure if they came back out and finished up the scrimmage or not.

Hope to see many of you at the golf outing on Friday and the Blue-White game on Saturday afternoon.

Was there too. They never got back out, and plan to continue the scrimmage Monday afternoon. It was actually Kendall Walker that laid the big hit on O'Leary, but Mark also had a good one on DeSean and had a couple of pass break ups. Dyer and Pride are back practicing, which is good to see. I look forward to seeing more on Monday, and then next Saturday. Another RS Frosh that looks good is C. Underwood at DE/OLB--he's physical and active. Not clear from the little bit of scrimmage who's ahead at the QB spot. Perish was with the ones, but had a bad overthrow to a wide-open Spencer. Loncar looked pretty good, and had the TD pass to Prentice, but that pass was underthrown and should have been broken up. Harris and Dyer had most of the carries; being cautious with Bell, which is the right thing to do.

Saw some of the remaider of the scrimmage today. Offense struggled today--a few picks, and not much yardage, although the main weapon had one carry and the whistle blew before the play was done. Washington had a big hit--he and Archie will have big years. Not real deep in the defensive backfield, but a good talented group. Towalid looks solid at corner, and King looks ready to be a leader, being in his 3rd year starting. Good depth on the O Line, but I hope they can gel as a group.

Also went to the Academic Award banquet tonight, and a football player won the Presidential award for the first time since Cris Sapp in 2002.

I saw the remainder of the scrimmage on monday....Defense was literally bullying the o monday...saw a couple big hits....the D's intensity level was higher that day....but I don't think the offense has a lot of plays in and the D sees them everyday so...some of it was because the O is still developing....couldn't really tell which QB was which....saw some good things and I saw some things that are probably related to it being early and new Qb's....saw a good deep ball to tanner riley and he knows how to use his body and has good ball perception...I really like our WR's when it comes to possesion...but I don't know who our deep threat guy is....i saw some vertical routes by some of our guys and I think our WR's had some trouble pulling away from the defender as far as speed goes...85 has deep threat speed but all that will come in time hopefully...I think hilton being a deep threat guy always puts the d in more vulnerable position schematically ......spencer can but he uses his size downfield for deep balls...Mardis looked great to me..he has great speed for a TE and hands and he is ready to be the number one TE...he is comfortable and I can tell by his body language he expects to make big plays...Luke Harris looks good...he is a power back...The D closed in on him pretty good but I am excited to see him in 3rd and short when bell gets a breather...74 on the o-line looks good..If 69 is only a sophmore then wow...I watched him in some drills...by his senior year if he works he can go to the nfl...I love what we do schematically on D with our personel..LB's look good...kendall walker looked pretty good and 46 is coming around...who is number 73 and 63 on D? burnett and another young DB who got a pick had a good day....but that is my opinion for whatever it is worth..won't be there saturday wanting to hear everyone elses evaluation...

More of the same in Wednesdays scrimmage. 1st O had one score on the 2nd defense, other than that, the defense pretty much had it's way (although with Bell being held out for the most part, the O is somewhat handicapped). I don't really see a vertical threat with the receivers, and they have trouble getting separation. Spencer will make some big plays, but I wish he had a higher revving motor. O'Leary and Riley are great fundamentally and get the most out of their talent. Ian Allen is 46--he and Walker will be ready to step in for Washington and Archie at any time. The corners still have too much of a tendency to jump routes, but for the most part their coverage is good. McElroy is 63--he looks good on the D Line. 73 might be Underwood or Stafford; they have also been looking good. The defense is very athletic, although a little undersized. My only worry is stopping the run against the teams like NDSU, SIU (we don't play UNI) and others--that will be a challenge. Perish has been the QB with the 1's in each scrimmage, with Loncar the 2nd QB. Perish is much more mobile, but Loncar probably throws a better ball. Neither has jumped out yet. The O Line has some good size, and guys like Patrick and Nick Rice, if they can develop some agility, will be good ones. The if is a big question right now though. Wood having a concussion doesn't help matters up front, and the defense has been living in the backfield in the scrimmages. Luke Harris should get the bulk of the carries after Bell. Dyer has some speed, but it seems like he never knows the plays or where to line up, and he shies away from contact. I don't know all of the numbers, but the 1st units in the scrimmages have been:

Offense: Perish QB, Bell RB, Mardis TE, Spencer and O'Leary WR's, Riley Slot Receiver, Patrick, Masters, Lutz, Passwater, and (not sure) OL

Defense: Archie, Washington, Painter LBs, Underwood or Stafford Rush LB/DE, McElroy, Boyd, Obaseki DL, Towalid and Burnett CBs, King and Layne Safeties.

The deepest group by far is at LB. A couple of good 2nd teamers at DB, TE, QB. The rest remains to be seen. Look forward to seeing everyone Saturday.

I'm worried about our passing game. Already was but these reports don't make me feel better. We struggled to throw the ball last season and we had a good, seasoned QB and the best RB in the nation.

Yeah the passing game is suspect right now but no need to panic. Still lots of unknowns. It is still early. I know most oc's who were former o line coaches tend to focus on the run game. And former qbs like to throw. I just think we throw the ball to score. Our plan is to run and run and when you sneak up to stop it We r going to score. We don't throw to pick defenses apart. We throw alot of vertical routes and slants which isn't very hard for a d to plan for when they have stopped your run. But that's just my take.
