Washington Huskies & Former ISU Coach Lindsay Meggs Weekend Opponents -- Weather ??

This weekend will mark the first meeting between the two programs. But the head coach of the Huskies, Lindsay Meggs, did spend three years as the head coach at Indiana State from 2007-09. Meggs is credited with making a major turnaround in the ISU baseball program and left Rick Heller with a superb group of players.

Rain threatens the weekend schedule...with Saturday's doubleheader looking the roughest to complete:

Today (Game scheduled for 9:00 ET)

A 40 percent chance of showers, mainly after 10am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 52. Breezy, with a south southwest wind 23 to 28 mph, with gusts as high as 39 mph.

Tonight

A 10 percent chance of rain after 4am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 41. West southwest wind 5 to 8 mph becoming calm.

Saturday (Games scheduled for 5:00 & 8:00 ET)

Rain, mainly after 10am. High near 49. Southeast wind 7 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Saturday Night

A 20 percent chance of showers before 10pm. Cloudy, with a low around 45. South southwest wind 13 to 15 mph.

Sunday (Game scheduled for 4:00 ET)

A 50 percent chance of rain. Cloudy, with a high near 55. South wind 9 to 13 mph.

I note that one boy of his (Jack) is starting OFer & a pretty fair player, while another (Joe) is on staff as Director of Baseball Operations.

And yes, it was Meggs who turned the corner of a stale Bob Warn program, one of RP's hires along w/ K-mac (who also offered sunshine to a blighted Royce Waltman program (5 consecutive losing seasons).

Here's part of the write-up from the Huskies news page:

This is the first time the Huskies and Sycamores will play in the schools' histories, but there are some connections to the programs. Lindsay Meggs spent three years as the head coach at Indiana State from 2007-09 and was 77-79 (.494). Meggs did finish .500 or better two out of three years with Indiana State, including a 33-21 record in 2009. Meggs' son, Joe, who is the team's Director of Baseball Ops, played one season at Indiana State as a freshman in 2009.

It also notes the Huskies are ranked #12 by Baseball America and are also ranked top 25 in three other major polls. It is the final pre-conference series for the Huskies.

They also warn about the weather issues: "With inclement weather in the forecast, it is strongly suggested to follow @UW_Baseball Twitter for the most up-to-date game times."

Megg's best yr. was his LAST @ ISU, and he bolted quickly back to the "Wild West," where he already had established quite a name in the CA DivII ranks. Hard to turn down a gig like he has @ U of W.

Meggs NEVER made it to the NCAA Regionals in his three (3) yrs. here. Here's his BEST squad was in 2009:

We were fortunate to have him for 3 yrs., although personally, I think RICK HELLER is the better "baseball mind." Why Heller doesn't leave the frozen tundra of Iowa is anyone's guess. Must be a "loyalty" thing. Of course, good $$$ sure helps that "loyalty!":whack:

Meggs was very successful at Chico State University in CA, where he did go to the D2 Championships, I believe twice. I think it is important to note that he gave Heller a solid team and some good recruits to start his first year at ISU. Getting Heller was a miracle as Meggs departed in late July of 2009. Heller, who's head coaching job in Northern Iowa was axed because they did away with baseball, had already signed on as an assistant at Creighton. What a lucky pick up!

I think this experience (late coaching departure) influenced RP in the hiring of Asst. GL, as ISU's McKenna didn't join Altman out in Oregon until June. If you'll recall, Altman initially opted for ARKANSAS, but once he discovered the "cultural reality" of Fayetteville life, he quickly backed out of the deal! Sooooey...

Sycs w/ men on the corners & NO OUTS (0) in the 1st...can't score. How often do we see this?

Worst camera position I've seen yet on baseball webcast...directly behind the dish - 35 yds. w/ no zoom. Can't see the deep foul lines of RF & LF:hypnotized: With nearby Boeing in Everett, you'd think they'd borrow some tech!

Friis 4th straight no show @ SS...must be injured. Starting a .143 (2/14) hitting Frosh @ 2B, w/ Dungan moving to SS.

WA RHP Bremer has 6 straight K's in only 2 2/3 IP.

Hannahs has the ISU catcher (Bifano) in the lead off slot...rare, as most C's lack the wheels for this role.

Bottom of 3rd:

1) Keaffaber late in covering 1B on GB to Zahn & surrenders 1st hit;
2) Tailor-made DP ball 5-4-3 falls short as 2B Camillo's throw off 1B bag.

Top 4 - Ayers lays a PERFECT bunt down 3B line to advance runners; bases now loaded - 0 outs.
- Giesler grounds into DP; ISU gets one (1) 'friggin run after all is over! ISU squanders another opportunity...

After 5IP, Keaffaber has shown good control while mixing well. 4 hits, 2 BB & 5 K's while blanking the Huskies.

Trees get another run in Top of 6th on Moore double off RCF wall driving in Roselli. 2-0.

See if Rhino has any fire left...showed signs of fatigue last inning, losing sharpness on control. Walks 1st batter on 4 pitches. Falling behind on the count traditionally gets him trouble. Gets out of the inning, but @ 86 pitches after 6, I'd pull him in the 7th. Plenty of warmup time for relievers (who began throwing last 1/2 inning).

RHP Olds comes on after a "blue darter" almost takes out Rhino on the mound. DP ball hit back to Olds, but poor throw to 2B only gets force out. Triple drives in run. Zahn saves another w/ diving stop of shot down 1B line & out. Hitting Olds HARD! I wouldn't leave him in NEXT inning w/ only 2-1 lead.

Top of 8th, Dungan stings a shot to RCF for 3rd hit of game (double). Ayers drives in Dungan on SGL to RF. 3-1. Giesler follows w/ another hard hit SGL to RF. Husky P change. Sycs now w/ bases loaded - 1 out. SF to Meggs in CF brings in another run. Gardner corks one to LCF wall for out #3. 4-1 ISU.

Hannahs pulls Olds after an initial K then BB. LHP Lunsford in to face LH batter...throws 4 straight balls. Pulled after 1 more non-strike. 5 pitches and a goner... RHP Larrison now in. Gives up SGL. Bases now loaded - 1 out. ISU FINALLY pulls off 5-4-3 DP to destroy threat.

Larrison gets 2 quick outs, but now struggling w/BB & SGL...tying run @ plate. Larrison pulled in favor of the "Electric Man"...A/C (Austin Conway).Facing their "stud," Joey Morgan. Hits dribbler to 3B for hit. 4-2. Runners on corners. A/C gets K on final batter. 4-2 Final. Good "V" over #12 ranked squad.

Lunsford.........OMG

Can't figure the dude...maybe Bluestreak should intervene! lol

Seriously though, he's been in a funk since Tiegs took over as PC three yrs. ago. You never know what to expect, which is usually the byproduct of tinkering around w/ mechanics to the point of totally confusing a kid. Reminds me of the '14 & '15 "David Stagg Story." Talk about a nightmare!

IMO, I also think that we're bringing Lunsford into the game while 1) he's not PHYSICALLY warmed up & 2) he's not MENTALLY focused/up-to date on the game DYNAMICS. Often, these pitchers are in a secluded area & have NO IDEA what the hell's going on out on the diamond. I'd have a RADIO in the BP so they could be TUNED to game conditions!

When Lunsford's "in the groove," he's tough. Good velocity & sharp breaking pitches...hard to hit in relief. Unfortunately, this only happens 10% of the time.

A note re: RHP Austin Conway, who during the '15 Cape Cod League season caught the 'browz of a few MLB scouts, then injured his arm LAST season, he's added a change-up & slider to his #1 "heater," and is now learning to mix his arsenal. I look for him to be in the STARTING rotation or long relief before the season concludes. He had excellent movement on his pitches last night, and simply needs more innings to showcase his variety. Funny, but when ya bring someone like A/C into a game in the late innings, it's NOT EASY for a Plate Umpire to adjust his myopic perception of an ever-shrinking strike zone. See Conway:

Game #2 - Sycs throwing 3-0 RH fireballer Jeremy McKinney.

1st Inning - J-Mac clocked @ 91 mph early. Syc's half AB saw Bifano SGL to RF but was gunned down @ 2B on an attempted foul RF fly ball tag up. Price ya pay having a catcher LEADOFF batter.

Huskies rally w/ no outs. BB & SGL. W/ 2 outs, Husky triple into the wind to RCF warning track to score BOTH runners. 2-0.

2nd Inning - Husky "D" showing WHY they're ranked #12.

Mixup between McKinney & Bifano allows 90+ FB to strike the mask of HP Umpire...LOL...nothing like a lil' facial massage!:blackeye:

3rd - Zahn leads off w/ ground SGL to RF. FC @ 2B on weak dribbler by Camillo. Bifano reaches 1B on error by 1B w/ Camillo to 3B (very fortunate as he was standing on 2B looking BACK @ the play - not watching the 3B Coach). Sycs can't score w/ 1st & 3rd 2-out threat.

Jack Megg's hammers HR over RF wall. 3 -0. Mckinney follows w/ 4 straight balls to next batter. Not the best control he's had...29/50 strikes in less than 3 IP.

***Announcers talking about the impact of the wind off the lake - why no flag(s) in OF?

4th -McKinney now 39/69 strikes...walks 2 straight. Time for a change, or risk having the deficit increase. Not J-Mac's night.

5th - Huskies score 2 runs on poor ISU "D"...2 errors, one on a LFer Kyle Moore throw that was SO BAD...beyond the 3B cutoff & 1/2 way up the 3B line - gets past Bifano all the way to backstop. Damn sad...I've said it before - Moore is NOT
our best LF option. 5-0.

Word is that Rosselli suffered an injury - Ayers moved to CF & Nowaskie now in RF.

6th - Mckinney - 60/98 finally being pulled in favor of LHP Grauer; 9 K's but 4 BB.

Hit & run grounder to LF...Moore lets ball go all the way to the wall & 6th run crosses the plate. What more can I say? There's always the DH.

Grauer now replaced by RHP Giles.

I've seen enough shitty baseball for one day...goodnight. Another game still tonight.
