Well, it will be dicey concerning our ability to be chosen for the NCAA Tournament. Here are the current RPI Rankings on Warren Nolan:

Missouri State #38
Wichita State #47
Indiana State #48

Here's the best scenario for us to get in. It is to hope that Missouri State (who sent Wichita State home today, winning 7-0) can climb back into the Championship game this Saturday and win. That way the winner of the tournament and the team with the highest RPI in the conference is the same one. That opens a second spot. I would hope that Indiana State winning the conference and winning 40 NCAA Division I games in the regular season would turn the trick.

IF Missouri State does not win the tournament, then that opens the possibility that the winner would not have a high RPI Ranking and that the second team from the conference would likely be Missouri State, thus edging Indiana State out of further play.

What's your opinion? What are you hearing?

Is it a 64-team field?

I'm thinking 60/40 in our favor to be selected.

Bummer to be on the bubble....such is the life of Sycamore.

If chosen, would ISU be competitive? Right now, we're playing w/ our head up our ass. No mission - no purpose - no Sycamore Pride!

Here's Todd Golden's view, excerpted from an article that will appear in Thursday's TribStar:

An NCAA Tournament at-large bid that seemed assured when ISU won the MVC regular season championship last Thursday is now in jeopardy. Preliminary projections have ISU’s RPI at 49.

Upsets elsewhere in the MVC Tournament – No. 2-seeded Missouri State lost on Tuesday to Bradley and No. 3-seeded Wichita State was eliminated on Wednesday – could mean that a team not expected to qualify for the NCAA Tournament out of the MVC could steal a bid from one of the favorites.

It’s not unprecedented for an MVC regular-season champion to be left out of the NCAA Tournament. Missouri State wasn’t selected in 2009 and co-champion Wichita State wasn’t chosen in 2010.

Bids are announced at noon on Monday. It’s going to be a long four days for the Sycamores to sweat out their fate.

“It’ll be very hard. It feels like we just played our last game. I hope to God it wasn’t our last game,” ISU first baseman Jon Hedges said.

Winning the regular season Valley championship and the D1 win total give us hope. But the 5 losses in the last 6 games, and the way the losses occurred, seem to lessen our chances tremendously. I hate to be doom and gloom, but I don't think we make it. Sure hope I'm wrong.

i don't know how the baseball selection works. but can someone explain to me how losing to purdue (ranked in the top 15) at their place, by a homerun, with 2 outs in the last inning is a bad loss? i would think that would help our case.

My thoughts as well. I am not too sure you can blot out that kind of a collapse easily. I would tend to think that they would be a one and done if they did but again, maybe I don't know enough to say that. I'd love to be wrong about all of this.

My only comment on the entire situation is this -- a month ago, I wrote here that we should forget about RPIs and worry instead about winning the tournament. Winning the conference tournament is the only sure fire way of getting to the NCAA tournament. I'm happy we won the regular-season title. I'm proud of the guys for doing that. But winning the conference tournament, not the regular-season title, is the only sure fire way of getting to the NCAAs. It's like I told someone in the Bob Warn Field press box last Friday night when I was there for Game 2 of the Missouri State series. I've seen too many MVC tournaments where No. 1 seed gets knocked out early and then misses out on the NCAA tournament. We went to the NCAA tournament several times when I worked at Indiana State and we did it by winning the tournament. That should always be the overriding goal. When you leave it in the hands of the NCAA selection committees, you just never know how things are going to work out. Still, I will be watching anxiously on Monday to see if we make it in as an at-large team. I recall going over to Pizza City one year and the Larry Bird Boston Connection another year and we had an NCAA selection party for the players, coaches and fansto watch the show.

Slim and none probably IMO.Thanks for a great season guys.As frequently happens in baseball ,good pitching beats everything else.We couldn't score and that was it.The team next season will be a very different group and we will have to see what happens then but this year was fun for the most part.

To me, the conference tournament in baseball is even more ridiculous than it is in basketball, even with double elimination.

Latest Warren Nolan RPI Rankings (as of 5/24 at 10:00 a.m.):

Missouri State #39
Wichita State #45
Indiana State #48
Illinois State #51

Not looking good...Indiana State is on the bubble and that bubble is close to popping.

I think we have zero chance and we have nobody to blame but ourselves, if you don't come to play you don't deserve to play.

I think that's how many of us feel. You can afford to go 1-5 and many eligible teams probably do at some point in the season, but not right at the very end.

I think we are in. We had 40+ wins and won the MVC regular season title. We beat Dallas Baptist twice, we almost beat a ranked Purdue team on the ROAD. We beat Notre Dame on the ROAD. We beat Mizzou on the ROAD. We have great road wins and great wins altogether that I think get us in.

That hurts, I think the bears are in and as of now the trees too. They will need some help this weekend. Can't have any bids stolen

It is Creighton (#8 seed) and Southern Illinois (#6 seed) going for the championship tommorow. As we said before the first tournament game, Creighton was wiping the slate clean and flushing a dismal season and was motivated to win the MVC Tournament! From worst to first.

The winner of the tournament going to the NCAA Tournament would be a travesty! That means that Missouri State would be the second team if that travesty happens.

(From Todd Golden) It’s not unprecedented for an MVC regular-season champion to be left out of the NCAA Tournament. Missouri State wasn’t selected in 2009 and co-champion Wichita State wasn’t chosen in 2010.

Either way, ISU's season appears to be over. But, "it's not over until the fat lady sings" at noon on Monday.

Warren Nolan RPI Ratings (as of 5/25 at 8:00 a.m.):

it looks as though we are projected to get in by the majority of articles, which is great. but we just can't have anybody taking bids away.

Despite the 0-2 flop in Springfield, I think the Sycs are in. There are a lot of other bubble teams flailing out of their conference tourneys early too. As long as the upsets in conference tournaments stay minimal, I just don't see how Indiana State is left out. The only knock on the Sycs IMO is the SOS. It's a touch weak.

As a WSU fan, I can only wish we were in your position. We went 0-2 and despite a good RPI and SOS, we sucked in the Valley, while you have a regular season championship. That'll carry a lot of weight. The big hurt for us is the fact that Creighton or Southern Illinois will be dancing with their win tomorrow. That really hurts both us and you. There is no way the Valley is getting more than 3 bids.

I just feel there are a lot of resumes out there inferior to yours. They have to make a field of 64. I think you guys will be happy. Good luck.
