The Recruit Level
Looking forward to playing you guys in BWA. Thought i would give a quick run down of our team this year. We play 12 players so no one player gets just a ton of minutes...we usually get a different player to lead us in scoring each game. Obviously you probably know about our "40 minutes of hell" style that we had back in the 90's and we're trying to implement again.

Good Wins: Kentucky, @ Kentucky, SMU, Minnesota (Maui)
Bad losses: @ Texas A&M, @ Alabama, South Carolina

PG: Rashad Madden (6'5, 180 Jr) 12.7 PPG

Madden is really a 2-guard but he is our best option at PG this season. Can get to the basket and is a good shooter but will turn it over due to him not being a true PG. Was a 4* recruit out of HS but never lived up to that until this year.

SG: Fred Gulley (6'2, 182 Sr) 4 PPG, 1.9 APG

Not a threat to score but a solid defender and hardly ever turns the ball over. Reliable but his name won't be called much.

SF: Michael Qualls (6'6, 210 So) 11.8 PPG, 4.5 RPG

Very athletic slasher. Has been on Sportcenter's top 10 about 4 times this year with his dunks...can leap out of the building. Has had stretches where he disappears but when he gets going he can score in bunches.

PF: Bobby Portis (6'10 242 Fr) 12.4 PPG, 6.5 RPG

Former McDonalds all-american...has a decent midrange game and runs the floor well. Not tough inside just yet as he is still a freshman...needs to be more physical. Will likely be a first round pick in a few years though, scored arkansas freshman record 35 points against alabama

C: Coty Clarke (6'7, 232 Sr) 9.7 PPG, 5.8 RPG, 2.4 APG

Really a forward but has to be in the starting lineup. Has struggled with foul trouble in the past but could be our best rebounder and has good range from beyond the arc. Brings good leadership and toughness to the team. Like a lot of our players, will have games where he scores 20 and then will score 4 the next.

Key reserves:

SG Mardracus Wade (6'2, 178 Sr) 4.1 PPG, 1 RPG, APG & SPG

Great perimeter defender, the best we have. Can shoot the 3 well but rarely ever does. Led the SEC in 3 point % two years ago but has fell off a little since. Played well lately though.

SG Anthlon Bell (6'3, 188 So) 6.6 PPG

Strictly a 3 point shooter, but can hit the midrange floater too. Will either be on fire or ice cold. Not known for his defense. Had career high 7 threes against Ole Miss but struggled mightily at stretches this year.

C Moses Kingsley (6'10, 230 Fr) 4 PPG, 3.3 RPG, 1.6 BLG

Really promising freshman. ESPN top 150 player out of HS...raw offensively but very athletic for a big man and blocks a ton of shots despite not getting very many minutes. Our rebounding is usually poor but when he is in, he gives us a big boost there. I think he has an NBA career if he continues to develop.

We have had stretches of the season where we have played like a top 25 team, and parts where we have played REALLY bad. Guess that's why we're in the NIT lol. I think it will be a really good game and im just glad to be in the postseason for the first time in 6 years!

Greetings:

We will bring our best and show you what we have tomorrow night. Come on over here after the game and tell us what you saw.

We remember the 40 minutes of hell. Our 40 minutes came sooner than yours. Nolan Richardson coached in the Missouri valley conferance at Tulsa before moving to the hog lot.

Record 23-10 (21-10 vs D1)
RPI: 74 | SOS: 146
Road W-L: 8-6
Good Wins: Belmont, @ Notre Dame, @ Northern Iowa, Missouri State
Bad Losses: @ Southern Illinois, @ Illinois State
Last 12: 7-5
vs RPI Top 150: 5-9
vs RPI Sub 150: 16-1

Usual Starters

PG: Jake Odum (6-4, 180 Sr) - Our leading scorer and playmaker. When he looks for his own points, our team can be dynamic. If he is passive, we often struggle. Has been playing much better of late. Has an above average knack for drawing fouls. Not the fastest guy so he struggles with faster guards. Plus rebounder at his position.

SG: Dawon Cummings (6-3, 175 Sr) - Very streaky shooter. If he is on, he can quickly run up 15-18 points from deep. Very active in anticipating passing lanes and has had quite a few breakaway dunks by jumping passes. Good perimeter defender.

SF: Manny Arop (6-5, 215 Sr) - Another streaky player like Cummings. When he is playing with max effort, he is usually the best player on the floor. He also has games where you don't even notice him on the floor. Played stellar defense in our conference tournament for the most part so hopefully that carries over.

PF: Justin Gant (6-9, 230 Jr) - Face up four. If you leave him open from range, he can consistently knock down the three. Struggles with stronger post players but was lights out in our conference tournament. Not a great rebounder for his size.

C: Jake Kitchell (6-10, 250 Sr) - May not play a lot since you guys look like you play small but he is your prototypical big, lumbering big. He was a face up 5 in high school so he can also shoot it. He started playing well down the stretch for us and he can rebound/block shots when he applies himself.

Key Reserves:

G/F Khristian Smith (6-6, 215 So) - The MVC's 6th man of the year, he has high major athleticism (originally committed to Cincinnati) so I fully expect him to play a lot tonight, possibly even starting if we decided to go small to matchup. Great vertical jump. Jump shot is developing.

G Devonte Brown (6-2, 195 So) - Considered by our staff to be the defensive specialist and is a good on the ball defender but will gamble and can pick up cheap fouls. Offensively, he is pretty raw and can get out of control at times. However, he plays his best when he is out of control and going 100 miles an hour. Has a nice spin move that he seems to be able to pull off regularly.

G Lucas Eitel (6-3, 195 Sr) - If he is on the floor, he is there to shoot the long ball. If you leave him open, he will likely make you guys pay. High basketball IQ. Doesn't have great lateral mobility but doesn't ever give up on the play so there have been times when he has been beat but got the backside block.

Very good synopsis there......

We are an enigma. We could win this game tonight, or we could lose by 20. Or anywhere in between. We had a lull late in the season, mostly a serious lack of effort/interest in our part. No idea why, since winning the final three MVC games could have helped our extremely slim NCAA at-large chances or at least our NIT seeding. (Since our coach said it wasn't a "collapse," I have termed it a "lull.")

IF:
a. We mentally show up to play (I can always tell in the first 2-3 possessions)
b. We hit some threes
c. Odum is aggressive offensively (and maybe post up an always-smaller point guard sometime before the end of his career, even though their starter is even taller than JO)
d. We rebound like we did in MVC tourney

then we have a shot to win. If any of those things is missing, we probably don't.

I know this info is reasonably easy to come by these days but why give out a free scouting report to the enemy? Let them google it or watch some film. In a quick turnaround like this an assistant coach scouting for this game could love you.

This just a bunch of guys talking... sure not any coaches developing a game plan from a fan forum.

If an assistant coach is worried about what some thirtysomething fan observes he likely is going to be outta work sooner rather than later.

I feel you there, we felt like we had a chance to sneak into the NCAAT a few weeks ago. Then we went from scoring 110 on Ole Miss to being blown out by Alabama and losing to a bad south carolina team.

Odum could give us trouble with his size and ability to draw fouls...we hand check a lot so if the refs are calling it tight then we could get into foul trouble. We had like 40 fouls called on us against south carolina.

I don't mind games where the refs let you bang bodies inside, but I despise hand checking on defense and allowing arm bars on offense.
