In 2016, the median net worth of white families was 10 times larger than for black families: $171,000 for whites and $17,600 for blacks. The average four-year cost of a college degree ranges from about $57,000 for in-state public college to $104,000 for private. For a black ballplayer with a Division II or junior college scholarship offer, it’s much less likely his family will pay out of pocket so he can ride the bench in Division I.

Interesting article but I don't get this logic. Any kid, not just black, that has a family income of $17,600 is going to school on the house through Pell grants and other scholarships if they have even a decent academic background. There is so much money out there for poor and minority kids that a lot goes unclaimed every year not to mention schools will get them in to bump their diversity numbers. I'd wager the bigger issue is they didn't take their high school studies seriously so that is the bigger factor.

In any event, that is usually the trade off between good players and great players -- they only have so many hours to hone their craft so if they're athletically gifted that is where the bulk will go and they will likely get those scholarships.

I overlooked some of the slant of the article; I'm especially skeptical of the $17,600 vs. $171,000 "net worth disparity" the author cites

I do agree that some of the walk-ons are there because of family connections ( see dook, 2019-20 roster https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/justin-robinson-4.html ) Looks like "The Admiral's" son decided to attend dook and walk-on. if I recall correctly, one of michael jordan's was a walk-on

plenty of opportunity for kids to walk-on at div i programs, i suspect, it's as the author maintains -- the "brothers" ain't going to sit on the bench, the "white boys" are thinking 40 years into the future
