Interesting article by Todd Golden in the Tribune Star today.

So what do you think? I will post a poll with this late just for fun - but really who do you think has the greatest Pizza Hut Classic legacy? It's not who's the best player among them to have played in the Classic, that's a different question. So to answer this you will have probably had to either A. watch all of these guys play in the Classic or B. have followed the results closely. I'd like to hear from some new folks on this, some of you that just read the forum and don't post! lol I know we've got a strong contingency of Marshall and Rockville followers on here!

What I know for sure is that they make up my all time tourney team. Throw in Whitman and Keyes, Woods from Turkey Run. Woods led Turkey Run to title game. Harry Marshal and the Maners kid from OV and it's a solid squad.

Did I leave off anyone from all time tourney ?

Umm yeah not sure how you can leave of Armon Basset and Jarvis from South was a pretty darn good player - espeically in the Classic, although he not as good as the others.

These guys are not current Sycamores. lol

Oh well I see what he was doing. You see what happens you deviate from the question asked??

Actually on second thought he wasn't doing that at all he was giving his all time tourney team. As he added a kid from Turkey Run and the Owen Valley kid neither Sycamore. "lol"

Thought this might generate some more discussion? Kinda quiet in here? Afraid to make a stand? 4 of you have went with RJ? Why? Because he's the most prolific scorer of the group? None of his teams made the Championship game - all of the other not only made the Championship game, they all won it. To have the greatest legacy shouldn't you have to win a title? In professional sports your legacy is determined "often times" by how many championships you win. In this case RJ's teams didn't win any.

I will tell ya all who I voted for once we get some talk going on this subject. You might be surprised who I voted for, I will tell you it wasn't Odum - although he is the best player to have ever played in the PH Classic.

not to knit pick but best player to play in the classic as in he was the best player during high school or he went on to be the best player that ever played in the classic? If your talking about the latter ill agree, Once his college career is over JO will be the best player that played in the classic. But talking about strictly HS days I would take Armon over Jake. its not by a wide margin but Armon in hs was the best scorer I've seen and he was really a pretty good defender. Jake had no absolutely shot back then and was only about 6 foot tall too. Armon was a much more polished player when he graduated HS.

I voted for JO on the question but I think you could make a case for any of the four.

Legacy does not mean winner. It means an individual presence that is remembered and I think RJ will be remembered for some time in the PHC dont you?

Lookng at the program I have to add Nate Blank also, he is only one on 4 all tourney teams.

Its tough since they all hve something over another in the group. If i were picking a PG its Jake, Post /PF is Gant, Scorers RJ and Eitals....Armon, Blank, Whitman are also on there, . Its like the NBA all star, if we add another, who gets removed? Let me throw 10 names out, if you dissagree take one off

All-time PHWVC

Odum
RJ
Lucas and Logan Eital
Gant
Whitman
Blank
Bassettt
Marshall
Keyes

If you got another take one off and justify it

I played AAU with Armon, played against him in middle school when I was at Honey Creek and he at Chauncy and played with him at South. Now I didn't continue playing basketball after my Sophomore year but what Armon was missing was a true PG. He was a better 2 guard in high school and he was asked to handle the ball more than was necessary. It would have helped his game tremendously if he had another PG to create space for him to operate.

Jake Odum was the best PG in the state of Indiana and I'm not sure Armon could have made that claim. I think Odum put up numbers across the board just as impressive as Armon and I think Armon was playing on more talented teams. Hatfield, Davis brothers, Talpas - they had a lot of guys who were solid basketball players and Odum didn't have much IMO.

To answer your question, Odum has been the best high school basketball player to play in the classic. He was and always has been highly underrated - he clearly didn't get the credit he was due in high school hence him only being recruited by Indiana State. Look growing 4 inches helped him no doubt, but it's not the sole reason he's been so great at Indiana State. Jake Odum was as good of a PG as I have ever seen play high school basketball and I've seen and played against some pretty good ones.

But Armon is good and I take no exception to your opinion, just have a little different perspective that's all.

I voted for RJ - guys like him have helped make the classic what it is. It gave people in Terre Haute a chance to see a kid who had committed to Indiana State early on and he never disappointed. He was (and still is) obviously a good scorer. I think he was on less talented teams that played above expectations but back to my first point. The PH Classic has thrived because it get's at that Hoosier Hysteria that people in Indiana have come to love, especially folks from small towns like Rockville and Marshall. Not very often do they get the opportunity to play South or North on a neutral floor - when your playing in the PH Classic it's basically a neutral floor and it helps level the playing field (believe it or not). RJ created his own legacy in the PH Classic and I think it was probably the best one, title or not.

no doubt Jake was underrated. I was right there screaming that with you when he was a sr in hs. He was probably the best PG in the state that year (him and hulls were very close). I totally agree Armon was more of a 2 and JO is a much better true PG, but I was saying Armon was the better player not PG. Armon could score on anyone at will including guys like mike conley jr. He could beat you with the drive, pull up, or 3 ball. His teams were much more talented and well rounded but when playing against great competition like LN he was the only guy who really was kept us in those games. I think his sr year he scored every point in the first half of the semi state game?? Its really a great discussion because they were both great, just at different things. If you put them on the same team idk if south would of ever lost a game lol

RJ def. had the least around him of the 4. Eitel obviously had his brother but also a couple of other really tough players alongside him. Odum had an array of shooters to dish to and Gant had Anderson and a couple of other decent guys. When teams could focus almost soley on him and he was still able to put up 25-30+ that is impressive

Eitel won the championship while beating the other top three teams in the tournament- North (Gant), South (Odum) and Rockville (Mahurin). The twins will always be remembered for there impact on the WVC.

With that said, I still had to vote for my boy, JG!!

Kinda quiet in here? Afraid to make a stand? 4 of you have went with RJ? Why? Because he's the most prolific scorer of the group? .

Well, it's now 9 of us who went with RJ. Why? Maybe it's the way the question about the poll was framed. "Which Current Sycamore has Greatest PHC Legacy?" Maybe if it was worded "Which Current Sycamore has the greatest PHC Championship Legacy?" others may have received more votes.

Having a scoring record like RJ's is an All PHC acheivement, and a legacy that should last for a long long time. Especially for a kid from Rockvile. How close is Rhett Smith to RJ's numbers?

Anyway, just what would RJ's scoring records have been, if he had gotten to play on and further in the tournament all of those years?

Plus mind you, we are talking about Rockville. (Sorry Rockville fans) Rockville, is NOT supposed to have players like RJ, standing up and out doing mega schools THN and THS. It's just not supposed to happen. So that adds to the RJ "Bobby Plump" Mahurin type mystique of RJ.

Also, even though Rockville never won the PHC, someone could start the urban myth that they did, and some people would probably believe it. I mean look at that other PHC thread. There are actuall basketball fans who have all kinds of ideas floating around, that aren't even close to being correct about the PHC.

So let's get it started SSOM, do you remember back in the day when Rockville won the PHC? Rockvilles championship was almost as unbelievable, unimaginable and unthinkable as Marshall and Sullivan's. Now who's going to throw stones at that legend?;)

I had to go with RJ. He is the leading scorer in the PHWVC with 292 points. He holds records for most points scored in a single game, in the tournament, and most field goals in a game. He defeated a very good THS squad one year that had Odum, Jarvis. He might also be the tallest player to ever play in the PHWVC.

I went with Eitel. Marshall made a pretty amazing run the year they won it, beating North (Gant), South (Odum) and Rockville (Mahurin), along with a pretty good West Vigo team as well. Marshall was the first 'small' school to win the tournament and absolutely demolished THN in the championship.

If i recall correctly Rockville beat south without those two players. Jarvis was hurt and Odum was suspensed or hurt, cant remember.

Marshall didn't play West Vigo in the tourney that year, but they did beat West Vigo later in the year at West Vigo. Marshall did have a very good team that year. They made it to the state championships in Illinois before losing in their final four. They did finish 3rd in the state that year for 2A in Illinois.
