My dad is planning to go again. During the losing streak he went maybe once a year. This will be his third home game in a row. That's saying something. It's people like that we have to draw. Word definitely needs to be spread around campus about the team's success and the excitement at the stadium. Going to the games is no longer something for students to shy away from. It should no longer be something they feel embarrassed about admitting to others. If others frown on it, to hell with them. Going out and watching football (any sport for that matter) and cheering your team on is a big part of the college experience and one they'll regret missing. I worked full time while going to school and almost never made it to games. I regret that and truly enjoy everyone I get to attend now. Well, except for the monsoon at Macomb, but at least that was an experience.

I hope there are more than 2500 at this game, but won't be shocked if there aren't. Haven't looked at the weather forecast though.

Unfortunately I wont be able to make it this week due to getting assigned to officiate a playoff game in illinois. Its great to get a game but it sucks that i have to miss a sycamore game. If they would have scheduled the ISU game at noon i could have made it. Will definately be ther for UNI

Comparing two weekends...

My daughter is a Journalism major at Mizzou and three weeks ago her sorority sponsored a "Dad's Day" which included tickets to the Mizzou/Colorado football game. The following week I made the trek to 'the Haute with the "Ball and Chain" to see my beloved Trees play the SpringPatch Eleven. Here is what the two weekends cost...

Mizzou:
1. tailgating on an asphalt parking lot
2. Parking $15
3. 2 Tickets @ $55 each = $110.00
4. Two bottled waters - 2 x $3.50 = $7.00
5. One program - $15.00
6. Six hours roundtrip drive from my Illinois home
Total cost: $147.00

I.S.U.
1. tailgating in a park like setting
2. Parking - Free
3. Tickets - 2 @ $8.00 each = $16.00
4. Box of Popcorn and two cokes = $4.00
5. One program - $1.00 (and a free poster)
6. Five hours roundtrip drive from my Illinois home
Total Cost: $21

The ISU game was a much more enjoyable

I would love to see a nice, big crowd there Saturday. However, I think the students (as usual) will let us alumni down by staying home in droves. The local area people won't show up, either. I mean, hey, we lost a game. Why go now??? If we have 2,000 at the game, I'll be surprised. Hate to be negative, but I know the 'Haute!!! (For the record, I would love to come back on here Sunday and eat my words!!!)

I will be making the trek over with my son. My son, my dad, and I will be taking in the Sycamore victory over the Jackrabbits! I can't wait - a BIG Sycamore win!!!

Obviously not a student anymore. I will be showing up with my son and several of his friends who are camping out with him Friday night. Go Sycamores!

Last time I looked, we're undefeated at home. That seems like a damn good reason to go. A road loss hasn't killed the momentum, or at least it shouldn't.

Conversation between students on Saturday:
Student 1: Hey isn't there a football game today?
Student 2: Football? Here? I thought they lost last week?
S1: Yeah.
S2: They suck. This town is boring.

Here is an ISU Alum that will be tailgating with at least 2 other ISU alums and probably 8-10 Terre Hauteans... I have committments from 3 of my buddies to go into the game. The previous two games I have got them to Memorial Stadium to tailgate... but they haven't made it in. They both bet me in the 4th quarter - when ISU was down by 14 with 11 minutes to go - that if ISU won, they would go in for the next game!! Pretty sure they were just appeasing me... and Trent and the boys are making them pay! One of them already has their ticket! ;-)

Hey, cut the students and Hautians some slack. After winning 2 games of 60 with two wins over division opponents this year, I wouldn't necessarly expect a huge crowd. It's going to take time to build loyalty back. Hurling insults at people because they aren't fired up to see a 6-60 team doesn't make much sense and IMO is counterproductive.

The University needs to step things up and encourage tailgating among student groups and local alumni and businesses. For many football fans, the tailgating experience is a huge part of the draw. Building that up is easy, then people might go into the game.

Geez, you all feed into the stereotype big time. All you do is bash students on this board.

I was the exact same way.
That is the main reason that when my daughter starts at ISU next year - she will live in the dorms. I'm hoping she gets the full experience that I never did. My college experience was like "super high school"... through my own fault (or necessity I guess).

do they do anything to get the fraternities and sororities involved like some sort of competition for attendance?

I have SEEN these convos take place and to be honest...this really isnt that far away from what happens...

ok revolution...see YOU at the game......

wear something bright that we can notice you. : > )

By the way, what's the excuse for not attending home men's basketball games? Not enough success there either? Hulman Center too far away from campus? Just wondered.

Also, this year's team isn't 6-60. It's 4-3 and have won all their home games this year. We're talking about THIS YEAR'S team. If we take old teams into account, who who attend an IU game with all the losing they've had down there over the past 30 years.

To be honest, I don't know how the students who say "Well they were terrible that's why I don't go to games" but when ISU played IU I went with about 30 other Students and 20 of them rooted for IU...rest assured those 20 aren't my friends anymore...

Where did I imply that I don't go to games or that people shouldn't. I'm stating a fact and keeping expectations realistic. It's been over a decade since the basketball team has had any real conference success and nearly two since the football team has. Until recently the baseball team was struggling to keep its head above .500. ISU athletics has been in the toilet, and in some instances, the sewage plant, for YEARS. To expect a community and student body to suddenly embrace a 4-3 team is simply ridiculous.

I'm all for people supporting, but when they don't immediately do it, I don't call names nor dismiss them. And people need to quit acting like this is a Terre Haute problem or ISU problem. Give any mid-major school ISU's major sport records for the last 10-15 years and see how they respond. Probably worse...ISU is very lucky to have such a loyal, yet small, fan base after so many years of crap.

Obviously the AD and coaches have gotten things turned around and those in the know see that...but give everyone else a break. It's going to take time be bring back casual fans and build loyalty again.

Rev, I see where you are coming from. My beef is that I do not understand students who simply won't support their school. When I was in school (late 80's, early 90's) we had crappy programs, but many times more of us turned out than they do today. It was a fun thing to do, and we believed that supporting our school was the right thing to do. I guess students don't believe that anymore.

As for the Haute, I know the Haute. Remember when we won the conference title outright in 2000? The next year, with three starters returning from that team, we sold fewer season tickets. Hundreds fewer. That pretty much sums it up.

People always complain that 1) Terre Haute sucks, 2) Terre Haute is boring, 3) ISU sucks, 4) ISU's teams are always bad. When something pops up that doesn't fit with those paradigms, you would think people would show some interest, simply since complaining about it has been so chic. I don't know, I just figure if I'm willing to drive over from Indy for the football games and the basketball games, a more casual fan that actually lives in TH could fork over the $5 to see a pretty entertaining team that the people have supposedly been wanting to see for some time.

No venom intended here, I just don't get it. Never have, never will. Particularly from the students, who get in free...:krazy:

No venom from me Rev

I just want to see the students and people in my home town city step up. See I remember when Larry Bird played for the Sycamores and we had a hard time getting the locals in Hulman Center. What big crowds we did have came from Indy, St. Louis and Chicago, people wanting to see the Bird man. We didnt start attracting most of the local crowd until Bird's senior year, AFTER he was on the cover of Sports Illustrated and other national publications. Then it was like, 'Oh yeah, they must really be good if SI is talking about them.'

People can use all sorts of excuses why NOT to attend a game or support a program. Heck, people still use the excuse of former athletic director Beanie Cooper cutting sports back in the 1980s for not supporting current programs. That was over 30 years ago folks, get over it!!!!!

Fans moan and groan that they want a winner. But when they get one, they don't know how to act. I am hearing the same thing about the current football season as I did in the Bird years. 'Yeah, they've got a winning record, but who have they played?'

Sounds likea bunch of Billy Packer followers to me. : > )

Support a winning team when you can. And now you can.

In my view it is a student cultural thing at ISU. It simply isn't in the culture of the students to attend games. It will change with continued improvement and with efforts to market it properly on campus and in the community. But more importantly it has to change slowly...students are not going to show up just because football or basketball win a few games...students are going to show up because the cultural norm changes at ISU. The fans will always show up...but until it is viewed as a "must do" by the students will not. This starts, as I have said numerous times with student organizations...Greeks, RHA, SGA, etc. Get them on board, other students will follow.

Side note: Basketball is working to get the student section improved and much more appealing...new shirts, new concepts, etc. You may see some changes in the "State Forest" in HC this year? We will see what happens.
