The final tune-up before the conference season gets underway this weekend was a doozie! While the Tigers have been on a downhill path since their 2007 year...The Sycamores--even in their wildest dreams--never imagined they would step onto the wet Taylor Stadium Field and manhandle the Tigers 15-1! The Tigers could manage just seven hits against ISU's 18. ISU had four players that had three hits: McCurdy, Curry, Kraemer and Burnam. Ort doubled for his seventh time this year and Walterhouse got his third homer of the season to drive in three runs. Lucas led with four RBI and Kraemer had three.

ISU has now won 12 straight this pre-season and if you take away the three games they lost at the outset to Southeastern Louisiana, they are 17-1! Wow!

The identified weak spot was the consistency of the pitching in the 7th, 8th and 9th innings throughout the pre-conference season. Today's performance by the eight relievers was great. Flora got two men on base with walks in the first, but go out of the jam. Browning, who is still trying to get back to 2010 form (he sat out with elbow surgery in 2011) pitched the ninth and gave up two hits, a walk and a wild pitch...but Coach Heller allowed him to get out of the inning himself and only one run scored.

Today's game got an "A" grade overall!

This team is primed to do well. One thing that will help is that we may not suffer a lot of one or two run losses with the kind of run support we're getting this season. That will make a BIG difference. We're averaging 6.65 earned runs scored against 3.03 for opponents in pre-conference play. For all games in 2011, we gave up an average of 4.33 earned runs per game and scored 4.70. In 2010, we gave up 4.63 and scored 6.11.

We need to realize that we WILL see overall tougher games in conference play. BUT, not factoring in future games, we are very similar to the 2010 team's numbers for a full season. The key will be to continue offense explosiveness and to get the team ERA to around 4.0.

It looks like with our hitting it will be hard to win a series with us.Even if #1 pitcher beats us we will be hard on 2 and 3 every weekend. If the pitching holds up we are going to be in the conference race all year.

Seems logical. Hope it works out this way. A friend and I are planning to get to a game with ISUR at the end of the month. Looking forward to seeing the Sycs play. The Valley race could be fun to follow this year.

After beating Mizzou Wednesday, Indiana State baseball is now 17-4.

That marks the best start through 21 games in school history. Sports 10 (WTHI) had a chance to catch up with head coach Rick Heller on Monday. He's excited about the way his team has played, but knows the Missouri Valley is especially tough this season, and they need to keep playing well in league play which begins Friday evening at Evansville.

Interesting comment in today's Trib Star about the baseball team

"ISU — which received votes in the national coaches’ poll this week — has also won an astounding 17 of its last 18 games after it was swept in its season-opening series at Southeastern Louisiana."

http://tribstar.com/sports/x467323002/ISU-baseball-routs-Mizzou-wins-12th-straight

now we all remember what happened recently to a particular ISU sport that "received votes" in a national poll prior to an MVC season beginning.

I am confident this ISU sport won't suffer the same consequences in MVC play as that other ISU sport eventually did.

Where's Browning having his recovery problems - Arm strength? Zone consistency?
What TYPE of surgery did he have?

Turner Coach to Missouri?????

Wow. Baseball is certainly moving up in the world. Back when I traveled with the Sycamores baseball program, we went to Missouri via university vans. Two vans and a carry all trailer on the back of one of the vans. We also used the mini-bus on occasion as well.

We only got to use Turner Coaches on the long spring trips or to places like Wichita State. We also used the Firust National Bank motor homes for those kind of longer trips to.

Here's the post-game story from the Columbia Daily Tribune with quotes from Missouri Coach Jamieson and a couple of the Mizzou players:

http://www.columbiatribune.com/news...baseball-team-buried-by-sycamores/?tigerextra

My favorite excerpt is: A poor pitching performance eroded into a shoddy defensive effort which begat a lifeless offense. The Tigers were embarrassed by Indiana State 15-1 in their worst outing of the season.
"This should never happen — never, ever happen — at the Division I level," Missouri Coach Tim Jamieson said. "There's no excuse for it."

Also interesting: Usually a recipe for success, Missouri (12-7) put its leadoff hitter aboard six times. But the Tigers didn't advance any of those runners to third base until the ninth inning. The Tigers went 1 for 11 with runners in scoring position, and all eight of Missouri's strikeouts came with a runner on base.
