An incredible opening day for ISU's Dakota Bacus. Bacus pitched eight commanding innings, striking out THIRTEEN, walking two (both in the ninth) and giving up just four hits--all with two outs! Bacus had some problems in the eighth, hitting one batter and throwing a wild pitch. Bacus got the win. Duh! With two outs in the ninth, Bacus was running out of gas having thrown 127 pitches and gave up two consecutive walks...but got a fly-out to Hileman to end a complete game! Bacus got the win. Duh!
Offensively, Purple Aces starter Cole Isom subdued the Sycamores--compared to their usual production. ISU got nine hits. Kinda average...don't you think? Lucas and Burnam were the only batters with two hits. Lucas also had both RBI with a sac fly in the fourth and a double in the seventh. Evansville's Isom pitched a complete game and gave up just nine hits and one walk. It was a great pitcher's duel tonight!
I predict that Dakota Bacus will be the MVC Pitcher of the Week!! But we're now hearing that MSU's Pierce Johnson had a complete game shutout against Creighton where he tossed 16 K's! So...do I hear co-pitchers of the week?
The game was ultra-fast-paced as it took just one hour and 57 minutes!
Indiana State (18-4, 1-0 MVC) has now won 13 straight games, matching their streak from the 2003 season for the third longest in school history. The 1985 ISU baseball team holds the school record with 17 consecutive wins while the 1987 squad won 16 in a row.
