Since I just got back from Cleveland this evening, I'm sure I've missed many other threads on the topic, but............

Did we spend all week NOT planning to play against a zone??? We didnt attack the zone at all, rarely dropped it down low, I mean we just passed around the perimeter every possession.

Highly disappointed in the game I went out there to see.

you are right. It was so simple. why didn't we do it.

come on. give me a break.

As someone who can be incredibly negative all the time, I am surprised at all the slams on our team and our game strategy against Syracuse. Having a good plan is one thing, which I am sure we did; being able to physically carry out is different, and we couldn't do that.

After watching Marquette beat them, it seems the best way to beat Syracuse's zone is to just run it down their throats! We mostly held the ball back and let them set up in their long and wide zone. When Odum actually drove hard, he could have gotten many more shots off, we needed him to shoot and score more!! With that being said, it was still a blast to be at the game and watch it live! (:

You are probably one of the fans that werent around until we got hot at the end of the season and then went on the run in st lou huh? This post reeks of a bandwagon fan that doesnt understand it is a process to become a great program. We took a huge step this year by being in the top half of the valley and making the NCCA tourney by winning the MVC tourney.

We just ran into a very good team that played a great game. Im pretty sure the team was prepared as well as they could of been but you cant simulate what Syracuse could do in practice, its something that they had to see first hand and hopefully they learned from the experience and will be able use it next season. This is a young team that will only get better, sorry you were disappointed but I could not be more proud of the effort the team gave all season long. Not trying to personally attack you but if your disappointed in the team you went to see then you need to put the season in perspective and see how far we have come in a year.

yeah you tell me your way to do it better...get the ball down low to Big east defensive player of the year Rick jackson? like that match-up...Our guys were rattled on the front line, our backcourt did it's job...next year the front court will be stronger with RJ Myles (starters presumably) J-kitch, Gant and smith (he plays at 3-4)...Next year we could easily win the Valley and be a ranked team if Odum doesn't regress and Carl Richard works his outside game a bit, he spreads defense by shooting around 38-40 percent from 3. We become extremely tough to beat with Odum, lathan, Carl, RJ and Myles. plus Brown, Gant, Mcwhorter, Smith and the Eitels...I am guessing we won't redshirt any of those two new guys...

We took it to them early a few times and got hammered but no foul got called. You can only do that so many times and not take yourself out of the game. I was VERY pleased with ISU's play. We were getting good shots against a highly regarded defense. We just missed a few too many of them. I thought Odum was better than any player Syracuse had.

I have a question regarding the zone and how to attack it. ISU I believe has really only played against a "true" zone once this year, and it was no way near the pressure they got from CUSE. So my question is, to all of the ballers and experts out there, did we honestly have enough time to prepare for that kind of pressure. Remember that ISU has been playing a motion offense basically all year, you attack a zone differently and I believe because of this we could not duplicate in practice in less than a week how to prepare. No fault of coaches, players, etc, its just the way it is. "COMMENTS"?

Good point. I know that virtually no one plays zone the way Syracuse does, and that had to be terribly difficult to deal with on just a couple days of practice. Given more time, or given more teams that play that kind of defense, I'd say we would be a lot more ready for it. That's why a team like Marquette can beat Syracuse. Aside from the obvious physical advantages over a team like us, they see this zone at least once every year, and are far more used to it. Kinda the same way teams in the MVC have a penchant for beating each other up in conference play - we all know what to expect from each other...

Bill, I think we handled it as well as we could. I think we could have attacked the basket a little more to try to draw more fouls, but I thought we got the ball to the free throw line quite a bit and just weren't able to capitalize on on chances. All in all, it just wasn't our night and against a team like that, you must be on your game 100%.

MEM, you are right, we missed quite a few bunnies, and it seemed like that missed nothing. ITF, I don't know about you but I was glad to see CUSE loose last night. Of course it might have been nice to say we lost to the eventual NCAA champ, but I wanted them to loose, BTW, I was not impressed with their team. They were bigger than us other than that issue, we would have beat them IMO if we had physical bigs as they did.

I think we like to create with our inside drive, Odum is only going to get better...we are adding more and more talent, things are going to get better and better.

Actually, I'm beginning to think that we are the NCAA tournament "kiss of death." Seemingly, if you beat us in the first round, you might as well pack your bags, 'cause you're going home after the next game. Texas in 2000, and now Cuse in 2011. Both teams I thought might have a chance to win it all. Guess that shows what I know...

Heard on ESPN this morning that in Marquettes 2 wins ovre Syracuse this year, they went to the line 56 times. Marq is undersized vs Syracuse and they attacked with penetration. 56 times in 2 games is pretty good, wonder if the big east games were officiated like our tourney game. Seemed to me that we didnt get a few calls like we would during the season.

Also heard the after 16-1 and 15-2 games, its all about matchups...I would very much agree on that.

Cant wait for November

I can't wait for November either, we will be stronger, wiser and more determined and also have the mindset that no one in the valley should beat us next year and the non-conference teams should be put on notice that now we have a (Bill) chip on our shoulder. (LOL parden the pun) LOOK OUT FOR THE SYCAMORES

Yes, I can also not wait for next season! We return a lot and I expect everyone to improve. There is no reason why we should not expect to be the number one team in the conference next season!! :sycamores:

always tought te NCAA should make a NCAA game rule were if a team makes the tournament the first round game should get a guaranteed home return trip for the first round loser. That way scools like syracuse would have to play a game against a Indiana State

Me too...to be honest so should the big schools...it will make their schedules stronger...granted the money game isn't taken into consideration at all lol

first of all we played a very tough big east team in the cuse. One thing aabout hoopes its all about matchups, they were stronger bigger more athletic and quicler. also we really did not ever play against a zone like that they were long and closed the gaps rreal quick, so given em credit. Passing the ball around the zone won't cut it. Marquette proved that. You have to do a bit of driving and getting into that zone and being aggressive, they were able to pushus around, all we were looking for was for the 3 except mmr. Jake who drovce the hell down there. Basically you can'dt depend on the 3 all the time, and besides we did have plenty of openings and we did shoot 405 FOR THE GAME.
