PARKERSBURG - The Waverly-Shell Rock Go-Hawks didn't give themselves high grades for much of the regular season.
Thursday, the Go-Hawks passed their biggest test of the year.
Carrying a 11-10 record into the game, Waverly-Shell Rock did a little role reversal as they wore down the Charles City Comets in a 52-46 Class 3A district final.
During the regular season, the Comets (21-1) disposed of their longtime rivals with convincing victories in Northeast Iowa Conference play, leaving the Go-Hawks well behind them in the standings.
"This was a huge win for us," junior forward Brandon Hoefer said. "We were just a mediocre team all year, then we just started playing better down the stretch.
"We beat a giant tonight and proved we can play with anyone," Hoefer said. "There is not a legit starter on this team because we are such a well-balanced team. Tonight, we picked up the intensity in the second half and really wore them down."
The Comets used their height and finesse to pull out a 26-21 halftime advantage, with Jordan Vanderwerf and Nathan Buss scoring 13 and nine points respectively.
The Go-Hawks shut down the offense of the Comets in the second half and used a patient bench to chip into the lead as they entered the final quarter trailing, 37-34.
"Our game plan was to go in there and wear them down with our 10 to 11 players as they were only playing seven," Go-Hawks coach Nate Steege said. "I told them if we keep it close late we will have a chance.
"They kept their cool and played extremely loose and followed the plan," added Steege. "Our depth paid off and we just took the legs out from them. Each guy here knows what it takes and they sacrifice for the good of the team."
The Comets looked a little gassed in the final eight minutes as they hit on two of 10 field goals while the Go-Hawks drilled seven of their 12 attempts.
"They ran 10 or 11 guys at us all night ,and it was pretty obvious they were wearing us down," Comets coach Todd Forsyth said. "In the fourth quarter, they just out played us. (Connor) Coleman nailed some big shots right in a row and Hoefer gave them a lead we couldn't get back. My hats off to them."
"I can not say enough about my seniors, however," Forsyth added. "They are a phenomenal group and put together one of the best seasons Charles City has ever had. They accomplished a lot, it is just not ending the way we wanted it to."
The Go-Hawks advance to the Sub-State on Monday night against Forest City for a place in the state finals.
