Iowa Prospect One Game Away from State Finals

Waverly-Shell Rock point guard Connor Coleman wants to make State

Waverly-Shell Rock point guard Connor Coleman helped pull off one of the biggest upsets of the playoffs with a win over rated Charles City. Now this super sophomore hopes the success can continue against Forest City.

“We have been practicing really hard for them. We know that (Tyler) Putz is a pretty good player. He scores a lot of points for them so we’ll try to limit his points. Kyle Rosacker, their sophomore, is supposed to be a pretty good shooter. We’ll have to keep an eye on him.”

A win would push the Go Hawks to Des Moines.

“It would be great. We have set one of our goals in going to the State tournament. If we can get this win, it’d be a big moral boost for our team. It would be nice for this and next season.”

Coleman has really felt that the work his teammates have put in is a big part of their strong play as of late.

“We started off slow and throughout the middle of the season. But we are playing our best basketball right now. We are looking forward to playing at the McLeod Center (tonight).”

Their substate semifinal win over Charles City is one of their biggest victories over the last few winters.

“It was a great feeling. They beat us twice during the season. Our assistant coach told us it is always hard to beat a team three times in a year. That was true and we pulled away with the victory.

Boys district basketball: Go-Hawks turn tables on Comets

By ROD PAYNE, [email protected] | Posted: Friday, February 26, 2010 3:00 am | (0) Comments

PARKERSBURG - The Waverly-Shell Rock Go-Hawks didn't give themselves high grades for much of the regular season.

Thursday, the Go-Hawks passed their biggest test of the year.

Carrying a 11-10 record into the game, Waverly-Shell Rock did a little role reversal as they wore down the Charles City Comets in a 52-46 Class 3A district final.

During the regular season, the Comets (21-1) disposed of their longtime rivals with convincing victories in Northeast Iowa Conference play, leaving the Go-Hawks well behind them in the standings.

"This was a huge win for us," junior forward Brandon Hoefer said. "We were just a mediocre team all year, then we just started playing better down the stretch.

"We beat a giant tonight and proved we can play with anyone," Hoefer said. "There is not a legit starter on this team because we are such a well-balanced team. Tonight, we picked up the intensity in the second half and really wore them down."

The Comets used their height and finesse to pull out a 26-21 halftime advantage, with Jordan Vanderwerf and Nathan Buss scoring 13 and nine points respectively.

The Go-Hawks shut down the offense of the Comets in the second half and used a patient bench to chip into the lead as they entered the final quarter trailing, 37-34.

"Our game plan was to go in there and wear them down with our 10 to 11 players as they were only playing seven," Go-Hawks coach Nate Steege said. "I told them if we keep it close late we will have a chance.

"They kept their cool and played extremely loose and followed the plan," added Steege. "Our depth paid off and we just took the legs out from them. Each guy here knows what it takes and they sacrifice for the good of the team."

The Comets looked a little gassed in the final eight minutes as they hit on two of 10 field goals while the Go-Hawks drilled seven of their 12 attempts.

"They ran 10 or 11 guys at us all night ,and it was pretty obvious they were wearing us down," Comets coach Todd Forsyth said. "In the fourth quarter, they just out played us. (Connor) Coleman nailed some big shots right in a row and Hoefer gave them a lead we couldn't get back. My hats off to them."

"I can not say enough about my seniors, however," Forsyth added. "They are a phenomenal group and put together one of the best seasons Charles City has ever had. They accomplished a lot, it is just not ending the way we wanted it to."

The Go-Hawks advance to the Sub-State on Monday night against Forest City for a place in the state finals.

Connor Coleman is a sophomore guard at Waverly-Shell Rock High School in Waverly, Iowa who started as a freshmen and currently leads a well balanced team in scoring, assists and steals. Connor was a pre-season 2nd team sophomore all-state selection and has appeared in 40 games over the last two season and has played almost 800 minutes the past two years.

Substate #3
Teams: Forest City vs. Waverly-Shell Rock
Overview: There is no doubt that I never ever expected these two teams to meet here. Waverly-Shell Rock pulled off the biggest upset of the Class 3A playoffs with a win over rated Charles City. The Go Hawks shocked this class and proved that they can beat anyone if they are hitting their shots. Jordan David, Brandon Hoefer, Connor Coleman, and a young group have nothing to lose here. Forest City hopes to make a run to State for the second time in three years. Tyler Putz has been dropping All State numbers once again this winter and is nearly unstoppable.
