'15 TX SG Curtis "Trey" Knight III (8/14/2015)

WANTED: Passionate Sycamore Fanatics. That You?

Register NOW to join our community of die-hard Sycamore fans.

I understand the concern about Trey having or not having other offers, bu this situation reminds me of some kid a few years ago--was there some cat sometimes known as JO13? around here? Similar situation?

I noticed in the article that Coach said we are deep with bigs and he didn't want to bring another one in with all of them returning next year. I think the implicit meaning is that he is satisfied with how Murphy and Rickman looked at the early practices.

The Trib article says TJ is on a scholarship this year. I don't think the NCAA allows you to give an athlete a free year and not count it. If they allowed that, UK would have 20 players.

The simplest way to explain this is that TJ is still on scholarship, but because A) his injury took place before school started and B) he will not play at all this season we are allowed to use a future scholarship now. If TJ had been hurt after school had started or if there was any thought that he could/would play this year we would not have been able to do this.

By having Bell and ISU agree that he will not play one minute this season, the program has the option of using a scholarship from next year on a student athlete now as Bell will not "count" as an athletic scholarship because he won't be playing. Really, this is just a loan we are giving ourselves. We get the scholarship now, pay for it later (next year).

We were to have three scholarships next year with the departure of Smith, Brown and Burnett. One is going to Barnes, one is now going to Knight, one is still open.

Don't you mean that we now have two for next year and none open? We had 3 but Knight is using one of them this year.

Correct, and Barnes has verballed for next year so he will take one, that still leaves one unaccounted for.

We have used the three as of now: Knight (15-16), Knight (16-17), and Barnes. That's the way I understand it. We will only have 12 total next year because we've pulled one of next year's forward.

Which means pending any redshirts, we'll have a large 2017 recruiting class. I'd also think the last 2016 scholarship would go to a SF/PF/C type but who knows.

That's not how it works. BlueThunder has it right.

You might as well admit you are wrong right now. I'll be shocked if we have 13 scholarship players next year.

BlueThunder explained it perfectly. He just forgot to take a scholarship away from next year. He said it was a loan, but he didn't pay it back.

Gotta give it to ya backer...you'll fight for your opinion until the very end, no matter how wrong it is.

Everyone,

I thought I would jump on here and clear the air on all of this. It is actually quite simple and well within NCAA rules. As you know, we had a player who injured himself severely this summer and the doctors have indicated he will not be able to participate, in any way, for the entire 2015-16 academic year. When it happened, the coaches and I met and discussed options to bring in another scholarship player. As we do in football many, many times, it was decided that we would talk to the injured player about becoming a "student manager." Managers cannot practice or compete in any way like student athletes do. Managers can, and do, receive full athletic scholarships in a number of our sports and those scholarships do not count against the NCAA scholarship limits because those kids are not "student athletes" in that they cannot practice, workout, or compete like the players do. They are managers. The money still comes out of the team's budget, but because they can't "participate," they have no impact upon scholarship limits. The fact he was an athlete in past years is irrelevant.

This option was thoroughly discussed with the injured player and his family. The decision to accept this type of status and scholarship for this year was accepted and the "athletic" scholarship was surrendered by him prior to school starting and he then signed a "manager" scholarship for 2015-16 and a Manager Agreement, just like all of our other managers do, and have done for years. He is receiving the same scholarship he had when it was "athletic." Nothing changes other than he is not a student athlete. Just FYI, we have about 10 guys/managers on the football team that are in the same boat. Some will never play again, some just can't play this year at all and hope to come back next year. But, our coaches want to do right by the kids and honor the financial commitment, contrary to the general notion that coaches cut kids all the time for not being able to play. This concept is nothing new. There is no "borrowing scholarships" from 2016-17 or anything like that. There isn't even a provision in the rules for such a notion.

When the injured player surrendered his "athletic" scholarship, our new signee was then given that athletic scholarship as the 13th and final athletic scholarship that we can give this year. None of this has any bearing whatsoever on future scholarships. It is our hope and expectation that the injured player will return in 2016-17 and be placed back on an athletic scholarship. We will have 13 scholarships to use in 2016-17.

I hope this helps. Looking forward to a great year of Sycamore athletics. Take care.

I would encourage you all to follow me on Twitter at @SycamoreRules. I Tweeted out the basics of this yesterday afternoon so everyone would understand. Todd Golden's article also made it pretty clear. If there had been scholarship implications for next year, I am sure you would have seen that in the article. Todd is quite thorough and he actually interviewed me about all of this before he wrote it.

Thanks. That explains it. The "student manager" concept was the missing link for me.
Obviously, when the rumor first surfaced on here, it was presented as borrowing from next year. I'm surprised nobody mentioned this as being commonly done in football.
I'm too old to tweet.

Well, I apologize to all.

I guess I was half-cocked, because I didn't know what they were doing. I did not pick that up in Todd's article. I don't think he made that clear.

I was the one who used the term "borrowed". Probably not the best way to explain it, but it made sense in my mind. I was looking at it as we essentially just moved up one scholarship from next year into this year. I visualized it almost as Bell giving up his athletic scholarship and Knight taking it, then Knight going on his own next year (hence the paying back part of my thinking). My way was a more confusing way to look at it but in the end it is all the same. Still one scholarship open for next year when Bell returns.

Thank you very much for jumping on, and feel free to post explanations like this anytime!
