My 2 cents. I couldn’t care less where a kid comes from, as long as he can play, and help us win. Now, if you have 2 players with equal talent and 1 is local, of course I’d like to get the local kid. If you don’t already know, we struggle with attendance. So, if a good local player is available, we’d be crazy not to take him and hope he brings in some fans. Then, if the player is a good character kid as well as smart, we’d be crazy not to take him. Contrary to some, I’m not related to Matt, just a family friend. As far as a scholarship. Lansing was right on with offering him walk on out of high school. Where it gets interesting is when you look at what he brought to the team this year. He’s easily more valuable than 2 current players. For sure if he stayed he’d need to look to shoot more, and I’m sure he’d have improved in that aspect. Good luck Matt.

Ah you figured it out!! It's those damn Wabash Valley kids that have been holding us back all along!

And where did I say anything even remotely like that? I said the entire roster. Obviously I was exaggerating, but the point is some people here get too fixated on local talent.

Can we update this thread and put (Preferred to Walk-Out) add the word "to" and change the word "on" to "out". Thanks... It's just misleading the way it reads now.

In the past 15 years I can think of one player even close to Terre Haute (R.Smith) who wasn't a valley level player that was on scholarship..Meanwhile I can think of 5 off of the top of my head that were major contributors here..I could care less where they come from honestly..But we have had a far better track record with players within 30 miles of campus. Just a fact..Our best years in recent history we've had at least one kid from the region and 3 of our worst in the last 12+ we didn't have any. But yes by all means lets go get more kids from Texas or Arizona or wherever.

And before anyone thinks I want to trot out the first team from the Pizza hut classic..I think our staff has done a nice job evaluating local talent and steering clear of the ones that couldn't play at this level..The one exception might be this Deady situation..And even then I'm not 100% convinced he's a valley level contributor in the future..Just convinced that we have guys who most certainly are not that are still here.

Who are the five you are referring to???

Odum, Mahurin, Gant, Marshall, Kelly would be the 5 I'd think of.

I think it could be argued that TJ Bell was a major contributor for a year. If we consider Robinson, IL in the Wabash Valley, Tyson Schnitker contributed.

I'm just guessing here, but your and 007's interpretation of MAJOR, is pretty pretty different than my idea of a MAJOR CONTRIBUTOR.

Did you ever watch any of Larry David's Curb Your Enthusiasm? Cuz I'm pretty pretty sure we've entered a Larry David episode.

In Christmas Story, the Fishnet Stocking Leg Lamp, was also a MAJOR AWARD.

So of the Blue Ribbon and Top Drawer names referenced, we all know about O who averaged 14 losses per season, over a four year career.

Mahurin departed us with a year of eligibility left, after a Redshirt year.

Kelly was here for a year, and about 75% of that time was injured.

Marshall was from Owen Valley HS, and it's not even close to being within 30 miles of Terre Haute, so kick him to the curb, since Spencer, Indiana is probably a good 45 miles from the ISU campus.

TJ Bell left the team for "undisclosed reasons" and the Lansing was forced to let him back on the squad...but I'll concede and agree with you that TJ was a significant contributor for one year...but that's about it. See how agreeable I can be.

Schnikter transferred to USI, after tiring of Lansing's BS. Robinson, Illinois is another town outside the established 30 mile radius. It's probably 45 miles to Robinson, Illinois from the ISU campus too.

I liked Gant, and how could you not, what a great kid to meet....but he just couldn't ever get his game over the hump.

If these are our MAJOR contributors even within a 50 Mile Radius, I can hardly wait to see what's in our future in a 60 mile radius.

Those 5 all certainty qualify as major contributors by any standard in my eyes, but especially when comparing them to the rosters we have had through the years. Did they have holes in their games or coulda/shoulda done more?? Yeah..But those 5 were all legit MVC players...Taking a crack at one of our best 5-10 players to ever put on the ISU blue pretty much disqualifies the rest of your argument..but what the hell here's some more perspective on the other guys.

-Marshall was from Bowling Green, which is less than 30 miles away from state..All valley 2nd team player and all defensive team I believe??..Yeah he's a bum!

-Mahurin..Yeah he left early..Yeah his dad was a tool..But he still averaged 10 points a game his final season and was a fine role player in the other 2. Would you take a big who could hit 35% of his 3's and average 10 and 4 next year? I would be thrilled if Thomas gave us that...But yeah he was a bum!

-Kelly, you're right he was never healthy here..Still gave us 9 a game for 2 seasons and solid defense..Also hit one of the most memorable shots in modern ISU history against MSU at home and hit the clutch FT's to seal the deal at arch madness and get us to the dance..Bum!

-Gant was a 3 year starter and almost 1,000 point scorer. Never thought he reached his potential.. but looking at our front court guys since it's hard to complain...Never mind logic though..He's a bum too!
