It's baaaaaaack. Just threw the team's stats into my spreadsheet to get the first set of PER ratings for the year. Here is the first edition of the Sycamore's pace-adjusted player efficiency rating.

31.08 - Brenton Scott
23.19 - Emondre Rickman
21.53 - Jordan Barnes
16.84 - Matt Van Scyoc
14.84 - Brandon Murphy
13.84 - Everett Clemons
12.37 - TJ Bell
01.84 - Niels Bunschoten
-02.02 - Laquarious Paige
-25.32 - Donovan Franklin
-34.53 - Bronson Kessinger

I will say it's probably best to ignore Franklin and Kessinger after one game since neither logged 10 minutes and had a high usage rating for the short times they were on the floor. That will really throw the math off. This is why I've not done inital ratings until 5 games in previous years but I was bored so figured why the hell not.

Here were the year end PERs for those that were on the team last year:

19.58 - Brenton Scott
16.10 - Everett Clemons
13.10 - Emondre Rickman
11.84 - Brandon Murphy
10.27 - Niels Bunschoten
10.05 - Matt Van Scyoc
-01.06 - Laquarious Paige

According to John Hollinger, here is his PER Reference Guide. Keep in mind it is geared towards NBA players, but you can get a general idea of what the number above is considered:

A Year For the Ages: 35.0
Runaway MVP Candidate: 30.0
Strong MVP Candidate: 27.5
Weak MVP Candidate: 25.0
Bona fide All-Star: 22.5
Borderline All-Star: 20.0
Solid 2nd option: 18.0
3rd Banana: 16.5
Pretty good player: 15.0
In the rotation: 13.0
Scrounging for minutes: 11.0
Definitely renting: 9.0
The Next Stop: DLeague 5.0

Thanks Jason.

Funny to me when people (Lansing) talk about Scott's shot selection. He probably has a point, his shot selection sucks at times. That said, I'd rather Scott take a shitty shot than anyone else take a shot. As far as I'm concerned he can chuck it as many times as he wants because he has proven that he can make shots.

To the fans that think that logic is flawed, show me a player who can make shots on a consistant basis and I will acknowledge such and not take such a position. Scott has shown over time that he is a basket maker - he was out of high school and continues to be. My question is, why do we talk about shot selection and how many shots Scott takes - the one guy on our roster who actually makes shots??? It's ridiculous really to talk about how many shots he takes or how poor his shot selection is.

Agree with that logic. I will add that I do have a problem if he is chucking a bad one before we look for something easier or if he is drawing multiple defenders and not seeing an open teammate and chucking...not saying that was the case against niu bc I didn't see the game, but those are two instances I'm not ok with him shooting.

Agreed, in general. In the NIU game he took maybe 2-3 that were ill-advised, but for the most part he was open and just wasn't hitting them. In fact, he looked WAY off for 3/4 of the game. Shooters like Scott have to shoot out of slumps, and he did so and got hot at the right time.

What will be key is when defenders start doubling him on the perimeter out of a pick-and-roll. Does Scott still look to take the three, or does he pass out of the double, allowing us to move the ball ahead of the defense's rotation? NIU did that a little, but otherwise that remains to be seen. Having Barnes on the court with Scott as another long-range shooting threat will soften that defensive approach, too.

-34.53 - Bronson Kessingerl
After 2 games:

28.11 - Brenton Scott
19.78 - Everett Clemons
19.67 - Jordan Barnes
16.40 - Matt Van Scyoc
09.78 - Emondre Rickman
08.30 - Brandon Murphy

07.51 - Bronson Kessinger
07.32 - Laquarious Paige
04.49 - Niels Bunschoten

-07.64 - Donovan Franklin
-02.29 - TJ Bell

After 6 games:

35.83 - Trey Knight
25.61 - Brenton Scott
21.17 - Everett Clemons
17.75 - Jordan Barnes
15.30 - TJ Bell
14.52 - Emondre Rickman
14.49 - Matt Van Scyoc
13.90 - Bronson Kessinger
11.63 - Laquarious Paige
10.85 - Niels Bunschoten
09.73 - Donovan Franklin
06.87 - Brandon Murphy

Obviously Trey Knight is inflated due to his short sample size but the numbers pretty much back up what most of us have been saying otherwise. Also, in my stats spreadsheet, our W/L Pyth says we should be 4.3-1.7. Erase some of the lopsided win and we likely should 4-2 based on our statistical performance.

I am not at practice and don't know what happens or what the staff wants to see, but I would not be opposed to seeing a little more of Knight. I would like to at least see what he can do, what his potential is, etc.

Sooner or later you have to get in the pool and sink or swim. At least get the kid in for a few minutes here and there.
