When is the last day that we can redshirt a player this year? Is it safe to say with the amount of players HCJS has and only being able to dress 13, he is playing the odds that either he is looking to redshirt 2-4 or anticipating injuries??? IF redshirt is the case who are you thinking???? My guess is Martin, Kent, Crawford may be redshirted. Holmes and Miller are a toss up as to weather hey are active or redshirt to me.

I guarantee Martin is not redshirting. Kent had 15 starts at Bradley last year. Doesn't sound like a redshirt to me, but possible.
I think Crawford and Holmes are possibilities.
We could end up with some medical redshirts.
I never heard of a deadline. I thought if they did not play they could use the year as a redshirt year. I think they changed that in football so that you can play and still redshirt.

Martin is the only likely candidate I would even consider with Miller being an outside candidate. We're now about to the point where we have some class balance back into the program so the staff don't need to go after 5 guys again. Get to the spot where you only need to go after 2-3 guys. That is program stability and continuity.

We have 4 slots left right now for 2023 and if I had my druthers, I'd redshirt nobody, go after another grad transfer big, maybe a 4 year transfer that could sit and come in as a junior to join Martin/Avila's class and then 2 more true freshman. That would then mean the staff only needs to get 3 in 2024 and we've hit the sweet spot for their recruiting. If the product on the floor is benefitting by the stability, continuity and time under Schertz, then we should be able to elevate who we recruit to boot.

Don’t forget it’s typically the players decision to redshirt. Schertz seems to have a reputation for being honest with his players about expectations. He can encourage people to redshirt but it’s not forced. Whoever is at the bottom of the pecking order can redshirt or possibly average 7 minutes a game and burn a year of eligibility. There’s several guys on this team who are in danger of falling into that category. (There simply isn’t enough minutes to go around.)

Good point. Also, they can preserve a year of their eligibility but that doesn't mean it will ultimately be used here.

How many true freshman have ever won POY in the Valley? I'm excited about Martin and that is THE reason I said he would be the only one I'd CONSIDER.

You already know the answer Jason but for others...

Zero, Zilch, Nada, Zip...

only three Soph-O-Mores have snagged the Larry Bird Trophy...

Hobbs and Crawford appear have uphill battles ahead of them for playing time, so both could be options if the redshirt is even a thing we’ll ever use again.

It’s also hard to say whether Martin or Avila are ready for regular(ish) playing time, but both have been praised enough and/or were highly-ranked recruits, so they don’t fit the standard redshirt mode.

Schertz has said several times that the way he used to use redshirts at Lincoln Memorial is a way of the past. All freshman redshirted in his old system, and more than likely none or very few will redshirt again going forward. With a wide open transfer portal, it’s a pretty risky maneuver.

The only two I think should be considered are Crawford and Miller. Whether it’s to start the season or not, Martin and Avila could have big roles by the end of the season.

Crawford can work on his strength, driving and defense and become a really solid two guard in this league. He will have to understand his path to a legit role behind Coop, Henry, Vos, Hobbs and potentially Miller vs. potentially having a good shot to be the starting 2 next season as a Sophomore. Not to mention Gibson, Larry and Martin are taking time at the 1 or 2.

Miller’s redshirt should have more to do with if JS sees him impacting the lineups this season or if he thinks he can be a big contributor in future seasons without burning a season of eligibility this year. JS had no problem sitting Hobbs if his shot or defense wasn’t on, so Miller’s biggest competition for PT is Hobbs/bench shooting.

I agree with the Hobbs and Crawford, but I would think if Hobbs is not good enough to play now, they will not be interested in "saving" him. Except we do have
6 SR's; so that is a consideration.

I'm thinking the active transfer portal will decrease the number of redshirts, but that's a guess.

Also, due to the transfer portal, class distribution and size, as far as numbers, is a non-issue.

Hobbs is an interesting case. I think he could be good for us, but with the new guys coming in I'm not sure how he stacks up.

And Miller depends on what Gibson, Martin and Larry look like, I suppose.

That’s no reason to redshirt a player. Get real.
i guess we should redshirt any player that is not good enough to be POY?
What is this? Reverse logic? If he is a future POY then he should definitely NOT redshirt.

This year’s team and his role determines whether he redshirts. Not 4-5 yrs in the future.

Odum finished 4th (?) in MVC PoY voting his SR season... arguably, the top 4 could have been in any order - vanfleet won the 1st of 2 Bird trophies

Quite possibly the strangest response in SycamorePride history.

where in the world do you come up with “I guess we should redshirt any player that is not good enough to be POY”? Seriously. How did you arrive at that conclusion based on his post?

And why are we even having a conversation about a kid NO ONE on this board has ever seen play (other than high school highlights) becoming a POY candidate?

As others have mentioned prior, it makes 0 sense to redshirt anyone in this day and age. No one should be redshirted this year or any other year unless they are coming off a serious injury like Kessinger a few years ago.
