I was for the NIL when it was first proposed. I figured a subsidy along with pizza money for these guys. Now Ken Sterling mentioned the other day a player on scholarship at IU for basketball will earn at least 100,000. It has created a ruling and sub class, those with a bag of money prevail. It will kill the sport eventually

Yup. NIL was supossed to "you get royalties from t-shirts with your name on them" and "if a local car dealer wants to use you in a commercial and pay you $3,000 you don't get banned from the sport"

It was not intended to be and should not be a salary, but I guess we're well past that now

NIL + Transfer rules are killing the sport. Take 1 away and it would normalize. Going into this year 2-time transfers would have to sit out. That means that Kent, Swope, and Conwell would probably graduate as a Sycamore without much drama. You can't help but feel like a lot of what's going on with Schertz would not be happening if you have those 3 staying and Larry & Avila are the only ones you had to worry about transferring out. We are running it back with a top 25 team, no question.

Part of it may be that...but at the same time the NCAA has tried to restrict it. The problem is every time they have tried to steer it closer to that, they get struck down in court.

they were the cause of (RE: O'Bannon, Ed _ Court Case) but they also knew how quickly the rails would come off the gravy train, a fair amount of not wanting to share more of the $$ but knowing what the future who hold.

look at college football.... it's decades past the court decision regarding TV rights but today there are 42 bowls... 4-2. and with the "playoff," most aren't worth watching

expand the MBB NCAA Tourney and you'll see the same... a watered down regular season product, at the same time a tourney with fewer & fewer MMs

Like I've said, I think the current collective incantation is very much temporary because of what Twitch pointed at -- donations not being tax deductible. People will have donor fatigue within a couple years due to their money going to players and then many of them up and leaving the very next year. That bad taste will lead to people quit donating very quickly because lack of perceived value, especially if their team doesn't win.

If/when all college athletes are deemed employees, folks will be able to donate directly to the school and thus have the tax deduction. It will also be more obfuscated from folks as you'll just donate to men's basketball or baseball and then the coach will have the power to divvy as they see fit.

It could be apart of the hold up right now. People want to keep this team together, but they’re on the ropes wondering if they donate money to the NIL today, they have no idea where that money is going.

Well it will definitely go to players of the program you specify. I assume you mean the current ones?

Check the On3 article I posted in the thread below.

I used that to scale to our level when I came up with the $600k number. The consensus among the quotes was $150k for a P6 starter so if we could get to $600k, divided by five would be $100k. Considering starting spots are a finite commodity, I have no doubts you would be able to get top tier talent at $100k. Anything collected above that $600k number could then go to others on the roster. Your school and/or collective could also have other tangential efforts to raise "team money" like I've recommended having a year "The Shirt" like Notre Dame for football, card sets, etc.

Yeah, I mean the current starting 5. I would suspect people would commit more if they knew that money was going to someone specific (Conwell) vs. in a pool for an unnamed coach/players.

As a mid-major, I think we are doing a wonderful job trying to raise money and advocate for our NIL. Just my opinion - again the whole system is not really setup for MMs to be successful at this

Just think if we didn't have a FB team and the university could pay for most of the operating costs and coaching salaries themselves..as is they hit up mid to big donors for basic program needs and then try to hit them up again for NIL..
