College sports are so cooked.

Six former Florida State basketball players filed a lawsuit Monday against their former coach, Leonard Hamilton, over unpaid promises of NIL compensation that total $1.5 million and acknowledged within the documents that they boycotted a practice last season over the missed payments.

The legal complaint, filed in Florida’s Leon County circuit court, is an unprecedented and fascinating filing in the era of athlete compensation as roughly half of a former team makes shocking claims against one of college basketball’s more accomplished coaches.

The six plaintiffs — Darin Green Jr., Josh Nickelberry, Primo Spears, Cam’Ron Fletcher, De’Ante Green and Jalen Warley — allege that Hamilton promised each of them $250,000 in NIL payments from the coach’s “business partners.”

Be careful what you wish for.

The players wanted to profit off their names and abilities, and then fought any type of regulation or guard rails.

This is the system they wanted, enjoy living in it.

I love it....what else could you possibly want? It's crazy these guys had to live in such dilapidated conditions getting free education, special tutoring, clothing, shoes, meals, free trips, and whatever else they could get. It was just simply unacceptable to let them earn money on their own with NIL, striking deals with local or national brands to advertise for them. These clowns have ruined college sports for many fans and lots of future players.

The worst part about all of this nonsense is that it has turned a 'team sport' into a 'me sport'. That was one of things I liked a lot better about college ball than the pros. Overall the game at the college level is still way better than the pros, but it still sucks what college ball has turned into.

This basketball season is the least invested I've ever been. It's still fun to go out and watch a few games with family / friends, and make the trip to St Louis in March if we have a team that's decent enough to at least have a shot at winning the tournament, but it's certainly not as fun as it used to be. Watching a freshman who could barely sniff the floor turn into an all-conference caliber player by their senior year was one of the cool parts about college ball that we will rarely ever see again.

Appreciate & agree with much of 96's post.

Little off-topic, but I try to not let the national landscape deaden my long-term Sycamore fandom. Hope most (or all) of the fan base has, or will soon, move on from last year. It's time to embrace '24-'25.

I'm 65% fully bought into this team & season, and before long I'll get to 100%. (I started the season at 30%).

As HCMG said in his opening presser & other media appearances, we're not trying to compete with Power 4 dollars, but can have a very competitive program at our level, & it's still possible to build a team geared for conference, conference tournament, & postseason success.

Sure, the names on the back are now gonna change more often, but the front of the jerseys will remain the same.

Adapt or Die.
Beat Bradley!

The Bradley game will be a good test, but I like this team. The practices hopefully are passing to an open guy instead of trying to get cute and get another turnover. If we handle Bradley, then this team could be a top 4 Valley Team.

Was thinking about this more.

I'm curious to see if those that lie to their players end up getting either 1) blackballed by some of the AAU programs or 2) forced to pay over market because of the reputational damage of being someone that doesn't pay their agreements.

Guy I know used to coach at one of the perennial top 5 high school programs in the country. He said it was routine back in the day to have to pick up a player (names that became NFL draft picks) late at night, drive them to the regional airport to meet with the top Power 5 programs and their head coach...agent in attendance. You name any number of the heaviest hitter coaches...he met them. Been going on for years. Some of those hypocritical old timers currently out there bemoaning the current state of affairs were cheating their asses off. The threat of non fulfilling your end of the bargain was a bit of a two way street...possibly meant player ineligibility, potential program probation, etc. Zero guard rails=Wild West.

i doubt either will happen... too many AAU programs need, want attention on their players and HUNDREDS of people monthly refuse to meet their terms of contract... I can think of a few prominent politicians whose Hallmark is NOT paying full amount, any amount on contracts - one has been doing it for decades

I'd normally agree but since the NIL shit is now in high school, AAU coaches now have to go through the same shit and kids will literally hop from team to team in certain areas so they're not as "important" as they used to be.

I really wish the NCAA would just sack up and say NIL is NIL and then do some above board payment setup based on revenues from the NCAA tournament. They also need to force the split of football since the CFP and all the funds generated are outside of their purview. It's wild the NCAA can get sued when the conferences own the CFP. It should be the conference conglomeration on the hook for the football portion of shit.

how much of that is new in AAU? that org has been a mess for a helluva long time; go back and read the diatribes, shenanigans of the Avery Brundage era and they were as much of a hot mess as the NCAA has become...

Football... honestly, when the NCAA lost the first court case over TV rights, circa 1984 (NCAA vs. Oklahoma Regents), is when the crack first opened in the 'dam'
sheer greed by the "big programs" and the conferences has led us to where we are today

no one should be surprised - and there's ZERO chance the "power 2, 4, 5" will give up the NCAA MBB Tourney meal ticket without a Death Cage Match/Battle Royale.
they'll craft a plan to quietly exclude every potential mid-major, low major from the NCAA & NIT tourneys; the prick $ec comi$$ioner is bitching about "auto bids" being "given" to non "power 2, 4, 5" schools -- why they want to add an additional 4-8 picks. not a ONE of those new picks will be awarded to a non-"power 2, 4, 5" school.

It's been enjoyable to watch SEC football fans resort to making excuses for losing bowl games because half their team is transferring. Your programs and their boosters ruined college athletics. Let it all come crashing down.

Jason Whitlock???? Yeah no don’t believe this for one second. That dude is a disgrace.

the first thing I'm questioning is the 'bowl gift bag...' in the past, pre-NIL, the BOWL GAME, sponsors provided them - not the university.

Has that changed in the 'modern era'?

Other than that... I can buy the Sanders kid popping for the club rental, even some of the "rain showers" that no doubt occurred

The big issue with this rumor is if it is tampering, then what team offered him? This is a classic honor amongst thieves. The Longhorns don’t want to tell who the other team is because they have Manning to step in, and most likely, they are tampering as well. They do not want a finger pointed at them. This really is a non story in the age of unscrupulous agents and The NIL.
