Attempted murder.
I understand Indiana State's mission to provide opportunities for impoverished or first generation college students -- I fell into both categories. However, when a LARGE portion of your student enrollment comes from this basket, they are going to bring learned behaviors with them to campus. Indiana State keeps priding itself and puffing its chest out about student diversity and I call BS to that statement. They cater to 21st Century Scholars and Pell Grant recipients that come from that poor/first gen background and give them easy Federal money. It's okay to have a portion of your student populace from that but you also need other socioeconomic, ethnic and skilled backgrounds.
This modus operandi scares off quality students. Let's take a kid from Carmel. Carmel's school district is considered one of the tops in the state. Carmel High School's average SAT is 1668. The national average is 1498 and Indiana's average is 1470. Indiana State's average SAT for accepted students per the last data I could find was 1358. Unless a kid is getting significant scholarship money from Indiana State, why would they consider paying to go there compared to Indiana, Purdue or another school in state that is similar in cost? Most kids from Carmel wouldn't be getting scholarship money either considering they come from the middle-class to upper-class socioeconomic environment. The same could be said for most of the 9 donut counties around Indianapolis.
We've now had a murder back in 2012, attempted murder last night and the school shooting hoax just last week. I looked at the Cerney report on ISU's public safety website and it looks like other hate/violent crimes had increased from 2010 to 2012, too. A lot of the kids State has on campus should be at Ivy Tech or trade schools quite honestly. Just because someone qualifies for Pell Grants doesn't mean you should take their money. Just some food for thought.
