Hmmm, no Khristian Smith? Boy, if he ever needed locker room material...:viking:

I would really be disappointed with a 7th place (Valley Tourney Play-In Round) finish. Would hope and expect that this group of guys would be too ? Guess folks might want to get prepared for quite a few "upsets" by the Sycamores this season?

Sporting news has us picked 6th.

Jake Odum was a good point guard but do they all think we can't find another one and change our style of play a bit? Manny was good, maybe great at times but at other times? Dawon Cummings played well sometimes too but irreplaceable, I think not. Going to surprise some people.

Being picked for 6th or 7th place doesn't bother me too much. I expect us to be betther than that, but being under the radar can be a good thing.

I still think it is just as much of a reflection of how good people think the Valley will be this year than how much they think we will struggle.

Well our non conference SOS will be near the top. Playing against good teams will only make us better. We might start slow but I bet we end well.

I hope you're right, I think we're all tired of seeing the end of season collapses we've grown accustomed to the past several years

I have a good feeling about this team--I think they will be a pleasant surprise. I'm looking forward to the IUPUI game. Hope the Sycampores have a large and loud rowd.

Curious as to why you look forward to that RPI killer? I am simply ready for some basketball, but I am looking forward to the Vegas tournament most of all!

i understand your RPI concern. I'm looking forward to it because, as I understand it, this will be the first game in the newly renovated state fair grounds coliseum. I'm hoping that with the proper promotion State could have a better crowd that the AJags. It's also close to home. Plan on makeing several trips to the Haute, but closer to home is a plus.

IMO, it will pay off not dropping them. Not sure how long Gardner will be there, but he is making a name for himself in Indy and I think he will have that program on the up and up in short order.

Plus, we have a large alumni base in Indy. Sometimes it isn't always about the RPI.

I would say 6th or 7th is actually pretty fair given what we lost. I don't think they put much weight in projecting kids that are new to the roster... They leave that uo to us and I don't know about some of you but I don't know what to expect...

It seems like most of you do have a good idea - I will wait a couple months before I pass judgement.

I agree, I think IUPUI even has a chance this year, with their additions, to make some noise....at the very least in the Summit League.

I created a new thread, when I should have have just added to this one....here's another site (one I've never heard of) that has ISU projected at 5th, which I think sounds realistic.....and of course I hope we'll have a surprise season like 2011.

Id say its fair to say we have a lot of unanswered questions. That doesn't mean we wont get good answers to those questions, but anyone who thinks they know how the Sycamores will fare should start a business predicting winning lottery numbers.

Key positions getting their first taste of Div 1 basketball.....and how they react to this. The last competitive games a few of the Sycamores have played were against High School players.....there is a learning curve...a very steep one. The early games will be all over the map IMO. With pre conference games against Butler, St Louis, Illinois and either Baylor or Memphis.....whew..

So it doesn't bother me right now to see us listed by some as a play in team on Thursday, or a top 3 team...because they are both possible.

A few keys, most obvious

!. Gant and Smith have to be consistent scorers each night, and should feed off each other. No 4 pt games from Gant or Smith will do

2. Kitchell needs to be solid in the post, play well enough that Gant can stay at the 4 and Kitch has shown ability to make plays

3. PG, Obviously...No one will be Jake Odum and we don't need Tre or Scott to try and be like him. Just get us into our sets and make good decisions in the open court.

4. Burnett, Etherington, Bell need to be able to be solid when they get in, and this will expand their minutes...earn the trust of the coaches and that will help our rotations late in games.

5. Prusator....We need a knock down threat from deep.....it opens up driving lanes and helps keep posts from being doubled....

6. Brown. Devonte has been given the banner of our best defender by Coach.....he is going to have his hands full this year, but Im looking for a big step forward for his whole game this year.

7. Rebounding...Gant has to get more than 4rpg....Smith can be a solid rebounder. Our guards seem to have a nose for the ball and that will need to continue.

I hope to see some of you at the Liberty game Sat

No mention of Murphy? I'd bet he plays above Bell and Burnett for sure - although he probaby factors in more at Center or PF.

Could see something like this:

PG. Bennett or Scott
SG. Brown or Prusator
SF. Smith or Etherington
PF. Gant
C. Murphy

In fact - give me those 5 guys listed B, B, S, G and M and I will take my chances. Here is the thing abount young kids, yes they are raw but raw aint always bad because sometimes they don't know any better. In other words, they don't know how good they are or aren't supposed to be!

Its funny tough, every year we have folks on here that fall into the camp of debating preseason rankings like they have any real idea where we should fall. You have others that would rather wait until we have a better idea of what we are working with to decide. I always prefer to wait and see the team for myself before I make a decision to agree or disageee with pre season rankings.

Speaking of that, anyone heard when the first open practices will be? I know they made the rule change last year that allowed teams to start practicing at the start of October as opposed to the middle, but does anyone know when the first open practice will be for State? Thank you for any information you can provide.

I think October 1 is the opening practice to be honest. Usually is that first week or so because I try to get a sneak peak!

Like you said, a lot of unknowns, but as of right now, I'm not counting on much from Prusator and I'm counting more on Kitch than Murphy. From the little I've seen Etherington and Prusator, I think Etherington plays first. And most of you know, I'm a big Scott fan.
